Chapter 3

Penulis: Ayim
The "home" Natalya had spoken of wasn't the quiet suburban town where she'd settled down with my father. She meant the picturesque coastal town that my grandmother used to tell me stories about.

After seeing Natalya off on her bus, I returned to our apartment to collect the rest of my belongings.

The moment I unlocked the front door, I was greeted by an unexpected scene. Lucy was sitting in our living room, playing poker with a crowd of her coworkers as though she owned the place.

Their conversation stopped when I walked in, and several curious glances shifted between Lucy and me.

"Lucy, who's this?" one of her colleagues asked.

Lucy's eyes dimmed, and she shot me a subtle, pleading look, silently begging me to play along. But after everything that had happened, I had no intention of helping her maintain the charade.

"I'm Levi Meyer's girlfriend," I announced.

Lucy's face went pale, though she quickly forced out a strained laugh. "That's strange. I've never heard Levi mention having a girlfriend like you."

Her coworkers exchanged knowing looks, and the atmosphere shifted almost immediately.

"Right? The only official girlfriend Mr. Meyer has ever had is Lucy."

"Wait, I remember now! She was the woman lurking outside the elevators the other day. A stalker, aren't you?"

Having already decided that Lucy was the rightful lady of the house, they turned to her with concern.

"Lucy, this woman is clearly out of her mind. What should we do?"

I didn't bother arguing with them. Since I had only come to collect my belongings, I turned away from their accusations and headed straight into the master bedroom to pack my clothes.

Lucy's sharp voice rang out behind me. "Hey! Don't touch other people's stuff! Get out right now, or I'm calling the police!"

I turned to face her, suddenly struck by the absurdity of it all.

Lucy was my best friend. She had witnessed every twist and turn of my ten-year relationship with Levi, yet now she was treating me like an intruder in my own home.

Her coworkers rushed forward and began grabbing and shoving me. By the time Levi emerged from his home office, my shoulder strap had been torn, and half my top was in tatters.

A flicker of hesitation crossed his face as he took in the scene.

However, when everyone began shouting that I was a stalker and threatening to call the police, he looked away.

"I don't know her," he said coldly.

With Levi refusing to acknowledge me, the building security had no reason to let me stay. In the end, they dragged me out of the complex.

With nowhere else to go, I sat on the sidewalk outside the gated community and waited. Six hours passed, and the deep scratches covering my arms began to sting as sweat seeped into the wounds.

Yet as the physical pain grew sharper, my thoughts became strangely clear.

Levi and Lucy finally came out to see me after they'd sent their guests home.

Lucy hurried toward me with tears streaming down her face.

"Emilie, I'm so sorry! This is all my fault. Please don't blame Levi."

She then explained how she had posted the bridal photos on her social media account earlier.

"I didn't realize the fitting room mirror had captured Levi in the background. Everyone kept grilling me about when Levi and I were getting married, so I just blurted out that it was coming up soon."

I watched her tearful performance with growing disgust. "Whether you posted those pictures by accident or on purpose is something only you know."

Lucy faltered, her tears momentarily forgotten. "Emilie... don't you trust me?"

Before I could answer, Levi tossed a tube of ointment onto the ground in front of me. Whatever guilt or sympathy he'd briefly felt had disappeared.

"How long are you going to keep throwing this tantrum?" he snapped. "Let them misunderstand if they want to. At the end of the day, you're the one I'm marrying, and that's all that matters!

"Besides, making an official announcement now would save us the trouble of dealing with endless gossip and unnecessary explanations. I don't see what the problem is."

I stared at him, indignation rising in my chest.

For ten years, I'd stayed out of sight to protect his reputation and avoid complicating his career. Yet now, he was treating my desire to be acknowledged as a selfish demand.

"In what capacity am I even standing by your side?" I demanded. "Am I your girlfriend, or am I some secret mistress who has a marriage certificate but no public recognition? How much longer do you intend to keep me hidden?"

"So, you finally admit it." He shook his head, looking at me with open disappointment. "You've been pulling all these stunts just to force me to go public with our relationship?

"You always have to overcomplicate simple things just to satisfy your own selfish demands. You could learn a thing or two from Lucy. She's endured years of office gossip, yet she always brushes it off with a smile and moves on."

He slipped an arm around Lucy's shoulders and turned toward the building. "Her emotional breakdown is her own problem. There's no reason for us to stand around wasting our time on her."

Lucy kept glancing back at me with a look of exaggerated concern. "Maybe I should move back to my old place and let Emilie come home?"

Her suggestion seemed to have the opposite effect on Levi, making him even more determined to keep her by his side.

"There's no need. Living together is the most efficient way to make our relationship clear. Next month, we'll announce our marriage at the same time as the company's IPO."

His answer made one thing clear: he had no intention of changing the arrangement.

I opened my phone, pulled up Levi's and Lucy's profiles, and blocked their numbers and social media accounts across the board. Then I called a cab and headed back to the company to submit my resignation.

Natalya and I packed our belongings once again and moved to a coastal town where Levi would have a harder time finding me.To my surprise, six months later, Lucy managed to track me down through a contact in the media. After losing her position at the company, she'd fallen into a deep depression and become the victim of an elaborate romance scam. She lost all her savings and found herself back where she'd started, struggling to make ends meet. When we met, she seemed timid and cautious. Nearly every other sentence out of her mouth was an apology."Emilie, there's something I've never dared to tell you. My college boyfriend broke up with me because I kept comparing him to Levi. I watched Levi with a cold, clear head.To me, this was just another calculated performance—a public relations stunt designed to put an end to the scandal as quickly as possible.Levi slowly took my hand and looked up at me with the heartfelt sincerity of a Hollywood leading man."Emilie, the only way to make things right is to tell everyone the truth," he pleaded. "You were the one who stood by me and helped build this company from the ground up, all the way to its IPO. And you were the only person I ever promised to marry."Lucy isn't my girlfriend, and she isn't my wife. That marriage was purely contractual. Once we return to Skyonaiburg, I'll give you the proper wedding you deserve, take you to City Hall to register our marriage, and transfer fifteen percent of the company's shares to you."I stared at him before glancing at the cameras surrounding us.The old Levi would never have considered explaining himself in public. He'd always believed that such displays were beneath h

After Lucy was fired, she retaliated by posting a series of accusations online, claiming that Levi had used her and then abandoned her.For a newly listed public company, a scandal like this could be devastating. Yet Levi didn't bother issuing a public statement. Instead, he left the mess behind and came looking for me.When he finally found me, he stood before me looking exhausted and disheveled, then tentatively reached for my arm. "Emilie... It took me 90 days to find you."I let out a dry laugh. "Do you think that's a long time?"He slowly shook his head. "It's the longest you've ever been away from me. In the past, whenever you went somewhere, you never stayed away for more than two months."I folded my arms and studied him.He swayed slightly on his feet, looking as though exhaustion and sleepless nights had nearly worn him down."Then your math is wrong," I said, relentless. "The moment I left, I intended to stay away for the rest of my life. Go back to Skyonaiburg. You w

Levi had always been brutally direct. In the past, Lucy had secretly delighted whenever he used that bluntness against me. But now that his cold scrutiny was directed at her, she struggled to keep her composure."Did I do something wrong?" she asked tearfully, trying to defend herself. "I was only reminding you about this afternoon's meeting. It's crucial to the IPO. Did Emilie tell you that I was interfering too much? If that's the problem, just tell her I'll move out as soon as the company goes public.""You don't need to wait until the IPO." Levi rubbed his temples, already irritated by her excuses. "Move out today. I shouldn't have to explain why."That was his way of handling problems. He skipped the discussion and went straight to the decision, expecting everyone else to accept the outcome.Lucy had prepared a carefully worded speech, hoping to soften his attitude one step at a time. But my departure had taken away the leverage she'd counted on.Without me there to provoke

Levi pushed past the tenant and barged into the house without permission. For the first time in his life, he realized that when it came to making things right with me, he had all the time and patience in the world. He was certain this was the right place. The nail holding the calendar on the wall was the very one he'd hammered in himself years ago, during a visit to see Natalya.Over the past decade, ten different calendars had hung from that nail. On every one of them, I'd carefully circled several dates.Back then, I'd always looked at him with a shy smile and said, "My mom says any of these dates would be perfect for a wedding."Levi had understood what I was asking for. He simply couldn't bring himself to agree.Whenever he thought about the endless wedding customs, complicated arrangements, and seemingly meaningless social obligations that came with family gatherings, he felt a suffocating weight settle over him.The more often I brought up marriage, the more that pressure

After walking away from everything, I boarded a train bound for my hometown.I'd barely reached the security checkpoint when an officer stepped in front of me."Excuse me, ma'am," she said. "You're listed as a suspect in an open residential burglary case. You're not permitted to leave."I stared at her in disbelief. "Are you sure?"Her expression hardened. "You can explain that to the officers at the precinct."Two police officers approached, handcuffed me, and escorted me to the precinct. To my shock, Levi and Lucy were already waiting inside. They had reported me for residential burglary, and now they presented a signed liability release before dropping the charges.I was released, but Levi insisted on taking me back to his apartment.Once we arrived, he directed me to sit at the dining table before heading into the kitchen to make a quick dish. Lucy sat directly across from me, watching me in silence. The moment the range hood roared to life, a triumphant, mocking smirk sp
