Accidental Angel

Chapter 3

He drove with blind rage and anger clouding his senses, he was late for work, but he didn't care. It was his company and he could very well decide not to show up, those were the same words his wife had used, but had he ever thought of it like that? No. He had tried to be a good man, even as a child, taking on his father's legacy and even building his own.

And life had seemed so beautiful then, at twenty two, he had met Ursula Aurthur at a family gala. He still remembered that night like it was yesterday, daughter of his brother's trusted business partner and a goddess in appearance. When he saw her then, he had felt it instantly that she was the one, and her smile had warmed his heart in ways that no woman had ever been able to.

When they got talking, he got to know that she was a talented actress, since he was not one for movies himself, he didn't realize just how popular she was until his fans started asking for not only pictures of autograph of him, but also her own too. He had spent so long in the spotlight that he felt too happy to have a woman to share that game with then.

That night, one thing led to another and they both ended up in his hotel room, drunk and naked. But even the realization of what they had done the next morning did not change his feelings for her, he loved and respected her regardless. But later on, Ursula admitted to him that she felt ashamed and cheap and so she had left that morning before he woke up.

All his efforts to get her to let them meet or answer his calls and mails proved futile until she showed up at his door four weeks later that their one night had led to something that might wreck havoc on both the Xanders and Arthur's name if he didn't take responsibility.

Ofcourse, Alex had been too happy to have the woman he loved pregnant with his child and so he saw this as an opportunity to make his intentions known. Ursula accepted his proposal and they married two weeks later in a talk of the town style.

Those first few months were the happiest of his life until the bliss of new love and honeymoon would keep them in bed all day. He smiled just thinking of the moments.

But the first blow came when their son was born with Down Syndrome, it caused a strain in their relationship and their new marriage. But gradually, Alex learnt to love the boy regardless and Ursula was beginning to do so too until she began going back to work, and that was when the greatest enemy in his marriage surfaced. Now, ten years later, he couldn't even see a future for the very family they had built together. And he just served the woman he loved above anything else divorce papers! He closed his eyes for a second and tried to imagine that it was all a stupid nightmare, and in that state of imagination, nothing else mattered except her pretty face smiling at him in their bedroom.

The sudden cry of a little girl brought Alex out of his imagination. He tried to stop the car on time, but the screech of his tires against the tarred road did more to frighten the girl who stood transfixed in the middle of the road.

Alex looked confused as the car went totally out of his control, he tried to hold the brakes, but the car ran straight towards the girl. It was too late to turn and too late to stop, he watched in horror as his car slammed hard against the little girl and heard her last cry of pain as her body hit the hard floor.

"He just ran over that little girl!"

"There has been an accident!"

The car ran straight into the traffic pole and that was the only thing that stopped it from continuing into the express. Alex sat passed out in his seat for a few minutes, but the constant knock on the car door and the faint echo of people's voices brought him back to consciousness.

"Mr, are you okay?"

"He better wish he was dead because he just killed that poor girl with his fancy car!"

Those were the words that greeted him when he looked up and the blurry images of the people outside his car greeted him, and then he saw where he was and the memory of what just happened had him pushing his door open. Alex grabbed his phone and dialed his Manager's number immediately, not knowing what to do.

This was bad, he could already gear his brother's harsh voice in his head, this was bad. He waited for Arnold to pick and at the same time ran towards the where the little crowd now gathered around what he assumed was the girl's body.

Arnold picked up on the second ring, "I would fire you right now if I was in the right place, but we will talk about that later." Alex said the minute the call connected, "I don't know where I am, but get the team ready and send someone down here, you preferably. I just got involved in an accident and I think I have just killed a little girl."

"What? How?"

"You might see me in the news soon, until then, find me. And if you can help it, don't let Ursula know about this… or my brother. You will need to pay the reporters off, so report here right now!"

When he reached the girl, he was shocked at how much blood she had lost, and even more confused as to how this was even possible in the first place. Why today? And what the hell had happened to his car? Gosh! He had to remember to send those stupid car supervisors away.

"Let's get her to the hospital!"

"What use is it? Can't you see the kid is dead?" A angry old lady growled at him, "You drunk drivers, your recklessness just cost the life of an innocent child!"

The woman's constant outburst got the attention of the onlookers, who all turned to face Alex now. He realized then that he didn't have any glasses on, nor did he have any guards to protect him. He saw their eyes widened, and a handful of them even touched him to be sure.

"Is that not Alex Xander Jr?" The woman closest to him exclaimed.

"This is the CEO of Allure Art! It is really him, actress Ursula Xander's husband!"

Immediately, cameras began to flash from left and right. Alex rolled his eyes and tried to keep his composure, hoping Arnold would show up soon enough. He tried to shove past the crowd to the little girl, but the women around him kept trying so hard to get a picture of him with them. Someone even planted a kiss on his cheek and another took his wallet right out of his pocket. There were just too many people and only so little he could do.

The old woman beside him scoffed,"I knew he was one of them rich folks with that fancy suit. Well, looks like he just became a murderer too."

Her voice was laced with so much hatred and disgust that he felt sick to his stomach. He pushed past the crowd and made for the little girl, when he finally managed to reach her where she still lay on the floor, with blood seeking from a cut on her forehead and more blood from her nose, Alex bent down and scooped her from the floor.

"Drop her!" A female voice rose above the rest and halted him immediately.

He looked up to see a pair of green eyes watching him intently, he saw panic and genuine concern on that face too, which was more than he had seen from anyone in the crowd.

"What? Why?" He asked in quick succession."

"I said you should drop her."

He obeyed at first, thinking she was the girl's relative, and then he told her, "We need to get her to the hospital before she bleeds to death, if she's not already dead." He hated himself for adding the last part,

"She will not make it to the hospital."

"What are you? A seer?"

She snatched an ID card from her bag, "Hayley Mikael, a fresh medical graduate."

She pointed the ID in his face and then shoved it back into the bag then she gently snatched the girl from him and dropped her back on the floor before she knelt on the floor and took the girl's head on her lap.

"And what do you think you are doing?! Stroking her to sleep with the angels?"

Without sparing him a glance, she replied, "This way, we will stop the blood from going into her brain and causing any possible clotting there. We have to stop the bleeding! Someone call 911"

For a second, Alex was grateful and glad that someone who actually knew something about first aid was there to help. He watched the girl snatch a scarf from her neck and saw her rip it into two, she tied the first part around the little girl's head and then threw the next one at him.

"There's a wound on her leg, keep pressure on it!" She thundered.

He obeyed and gently tied the scarf around the girl's leg, using the remaining part to hold the surface. True to her words, the bleeding from the girl's nose had stopped and there was no sign of more blood from the wound on her head.

"Can we take her to the hospital now?!" He asked her hopefully.

"Have you been listening at all? We don't know

if any of her vitals were hit, any further movement might cause her internal bleeding. They will have to treat her here first."

Alex nodded his understanding. The blazing siren of the ambulance made him swallow his thanks. In no time, the ambulance team pulled up in their numbers and trooped out with their equipment. The girl was taken from them by the doctors and they started working immediately.

Several minutes later, Arnold arrived with Alex's guards and was even fuzzing over him and managing the situation with the paparazzi when a doctor came out.

"How is she?" Alex asked immediately.

"I'm glad you handled the situation the way you did sir, any further movement would have killed her. But she is stable now, we are going to transfer her to the hospital and then you can make a statement at the police station until her parents show up. Thank you for not running, Mr Alex, and thank you for saving her."

"Actually, it was Miss Hayley here…" he turned to look for the girl who had saved the day, but she was nowhere to be found.
