I was standing in front of Suzie's diner, staring at the welcome board without really seeing it.

My stomach was a tight knot of anxiety and something else I couldn't quite name.

I responded to Jason's text against my better judgment, and every instinct that told me this conversation was a mistake.

But here I was anyway, waiting.

The bell above the door chimed as I entered, and Suzie looked up from behind the counter with her usual warm smile.
