Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
Elliot scoffed. "What kind of chef gets paid that much? That has to be your allowance for being her kept man!"

The way he said it felt like a direct insult, especially since I'd earned every penny of that money honestly.

I was finally losing my patience, so I pulled out my phone and called Cecilia.

"Ms. Bennett, could you please keep your man under control?"

A heavy sigh came from the other end of the line.

"He found you?" She sounded resigned. "Let me talk to him."

Elliot took the phone with a look of utter disdain, but as he listened to Cecilia, his expression gradually changed.

By the end of the call, he shot me a vicious glare, muttered "Got it", and hung up.

Then, as if nothing had happened, he lifted his chin and slipped right back into his usual arrogant posture.

"You got lucky today. But don't think I'm letting you off that easily. Ceci is only blinded by you right now. Sooner or later, she'll realize that a knockoff like you could never compare to me!"

With that, he turned on his heel and stormed out. The door slammed behind him so hard that the entire apartment seemed to shake.

As I stood there, I seriously considered asking Cecilia to compensate me for emotional damages.

To keep Elliot from causing me any more trouble, I stopped going to the mansion altogether for the next few days.

Instead, after I finished cooking each day, Martha would come by, pick up the food, and deliver it to Cecilia.

Then one afternoon, Martha showed up with something besides the usual stack of food containers.

She handed me an invitation to Elliot's welcome-home party.

I stared at the gold-embossed invitation and felt a headache coming on.

I was just about to turn it down when Martha added, "Mr. Lawson has been driving Ms. Bennett crazy. She said that if you attend, she'll pay you ten times your usual overtime rate."

Martha looked at me with the unmistakable expression of someone thinking how nice it was to have it so easy.

I immediately changed my tune. "Why are we even talking about overtime pay? If Ms. Bennett needs me, I'll do whatever it takes."

The welcome-home party was held at Cecilia's mansion.

When I arrived, Elliot was sitting at the piano.

A soft spotlight shone down on him, and for once, he looked every bit like the larger-than-life first love straight out of a romance novel.

The moment the guests spotted me, several of them came over to say hello.

"Mr. Brooks, are you cooking tonight? If so, I'm definitely looking forward to the food."

"Mr. Brooks, have you ever considered taking another job? My mother is obsessed with your cooking."

Variations of the same conversation followed as more guests approached me.

Suddenly, the piano music came to an abrupt stop, and everyone instinctively turned toward Elliot.

He picked up a microphone and glared at the people gathered around me.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Cecilia's one true love. And the person you're all crowding around is nothing more than a lowly replacement.

"You're free to suck up to whoever you want, but make sure you're sucking up to the right person. Otherwise, you might regret it."

The guests exchanged bewildered glances.

Apparently deciding they had no idea what he was talking about, they simply shrugged and went back to chatting with me.

Elliot, meanwhile, seemed convinced that I must have somehow won everyone over while he was away.

He was furious, but then, as if an idea suddenly occurred to him, a mocking smile spread across his face.

He straightened his suit and walked over to me with a pleasant smile.

"I may have played well just now, but I've heard you're an even more accomplished pianist. Why don't you play something for everyone and liven things up?"

Then he added with a sly smile, "Unless, of course, you think you're too good to play for everyone."

Elliot looked thoroughly pleased with himself, clearly expecting me to embarrass myself.

He had already done his homework. I was completely tone-deaf. Forget playing the piano—I could barely carry a simple tune.

If I sat down at that piano, there was no doubt I'd make a fool of myself in front of everyone.

And then Ceci would finally realize that this so-called "replacement" was nothing like him.

Elliot practically seemed to be savoring the humiliation he imagined was coming. The smugness on his face was impossible to miss.

But I didn't hesitate to correct him.

"You heard wrong." I looked at him matter-of-factly. "I can't play the piano."

When her eyes met mine, I saw the emotions in them. Suddenly, my heart began to pound. We'd spent nearly every day together for the past six months. Then, one day, Cecilia walked into my restaurant carrying a huge bouquet of roses.I didn't dare accept them right away.Instead, I looked at her and asked, "Ms. Bennett, do you know what it means when someone gives you roses?"She nodded without hesitation."It means I'm trusting you with my heart, my future, and, eventually, all my money." She smiled. "So… are you willing to take me?"Who could say no to a deal like that?I laughed and nodded. My relationship with Cecilia moved quickly, and before long, we decided to get married. We picked a beautiful weekend for the wedding and celebrated with our family and friends, and even many regulars from my restaurant.I wore my suit, stood at the altar, and went over my wedding vows one last time while Martha stood nearby, wiping away tears."You have no idea how happy I was when I

"What exactly is going on, Elliot?" Cecilia demanded.Elliot stared at the photos and listened to the recording. The color drained from his face. But even then, he refused to admit the truth. "It was Damian!" he insisted. "He set me up! All of this is fake!""The medical records have your signature. And that's your voice in the recording." Cecilia's voice was heavy with disappointment. "How can you still deny it?"Cecilia looked at him for a long moment before speaking again. "I really misjudged you all these years."She turned toward Martha and said, "Martha, pack his things. He's leaving tonight. From now on, he's not allowed to set foot in this house again."Elliot froze for a moment. Then, strangely enough, he started laughing."I get it now," he said. "We've reached the part of the story where the stand-in comes between the male and female leads, making their misunderstanding even worse."He looked at Cecilia with absolute confidence."Just wait. You'll regret kickin

After hanging up, I opened my laptop and posted a screenshot of the employment contract I had signed with Cecilia. The contract clearly listed my position as her private chef, along with my annual salary. Then I uploaded receipts for every luxury item shown in Elliot's video. Each receipt included the purchase date and price. Every single item had been purchased with my own bank card after I started working for Cecilia. Along with the evidence, I added a short statement."My name is Damian Brooks. I was hired by Cecilia Bennett as a private chef with an annual salary of 800,000 dollars. I am not anyone's 'stand-in.'"The luxury items shown in the video were purchased entirely with my own legitimate income. The claim that I 'fled with valuable possessions' is completely false."The evidence speaks for itself. I ask everyone to verify the facts before spreading false or misleading information."The moment I posted my clarification, the internet went completely silent. But momen

This wasn't the first time Elliot had dragged me into one of his ridiculous schemes.First, there was the whole "stand-in" misunderstanding. Then came the disaster at the welcome-home party. And now, this latest attempt to frame me.I came here to cook for an annual salary of 800,000 dollars, not to star in some over-the-top soap opera."Ms. Bennett, I accept your apology, but I've decided to resign."Cecilia froze for a moment before hurriedly trying to change my mind. "I can increase your salary. And I promise I'll deal with Elliot. I won't let him bother you again.""It's not about the money." I shook my head. "I'm just a chef. I want to cook in peace. I don't want to spend every day being treated like some villain and dragged into one ridiculous mess after another."No matter how much Cecilia tried to convince me to stay, my decision remained firm. In the end, she let out a resigned sigh. "All right. I respect your decision. I'll make sure your final paycheck and severance

The doctor's hand tightened around the card, a conflicted look crossing his face.Elliot, however, seemed convinced that everything was going according to plan. Without a second thought, he ordered the doctor to wheel him out of the examination room.Outside, the moment Cecilia spotted Elliot being wheeled out, she hurried over."Doctor, how is Elliot? Is his injury serious? Should we contact a renowned specialist overseas and have them fly in to perform the surgery right away?"The doctor opened his mouth, then hesitated, seemingly at a loss for words.Seeing the doctor's hesitation, Elliot shot him an exasperated look, clearly annoyed that he wasn't playing along. Then he put on a weak, pitiful expression and said, "The doctor said the stab wound caused my kidneys to fail. I need a kidney transplant immediately. I think Damian would be a good match. He hurt me, so he should pay the price."With that, he gave me a smug look, clearly convinced that Cecilia would be willing to ta

After a full night's rest, Cecilia was finally feeling much better.I stretched and was just about to leave the mansion when I spotted Elliot pacing outside the front door.Apparently, Cecilia hadn't gone after him the night before, and he was now too embarrassed to walk back inside. The moment he saw me, Elliot stared at me in disbelief. "I was only gone for one night, and Ceci was already so eager to have you come keep her company?"He narrowed his eyes at me. "Damian, you're far more calculating than I thought. But don't get too far ahead of yourself. I have plenty of ways to deal with you!"Every conversation with him made me question my own sanity.I was about to leave when Elliot suddenly seemed to steel himself and stormed back into the mansion."Ceci, I spent the whole night thinking about what happened, and I realize now how ridiculous I was. I also understand that Damian is important to you. I won't ask you to send him away anymore. Will you forgive me?"Seeing Elli
