Chapter 3

Author: Tiny Feet
That afternoon, the planetarium lounge was quiet.

I was sorting through the final handover documents when a notification appeared on my phone. It was a new post from Lula.

In the photo, Elton was resting his head on her shoulder with his eyes closed, apparently fast asleep. In the corner of the frame, my blurred figure stood in the distance.

The caption read: [The groom-to-be is such a handful. It takes both of us to keep him in line.]

Our mutual friends had already flooded the comments with jokes.

[If I didn't know better, I'd think you were the bride.]

[Elton gets a buy-one-get-one deal. Not bad!]

[Maybe keep these pictures in the private chat next time, or Betsy's going to overthink things again.]

...

Elton hadn't asked Lula to take the post down. Instead, he'd replied to one of the comments himself.

[Betsy knows how we've always been. She won't overthink it.]

I stared at those words for a long time before opening the comment box and typing a single sentence.

[Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness.]

After posting it, I immediately left the group chat that included dozens of our mutual friends.

Less than a minute later, Elton called, his voice tight with anger.

"What are you throwing a fit about now? It was just a harmless joke. Did you have to embarrass everyone like that?"

I put the call on speaker, set my phone on the desk, and continued sorting through my files.

I asked back, "Did you even ask me before speaking for me and deciding I wouldn't mind?"

There was a long silence.

At last, he managed, "We're all friends here. We were just joking around. Do you really have to turn everything into a huge drama?"

I countered, "If it was just a joke, why are you so worked up about it now?"

All I heard was his heavy breathing. Then he abruptly hung up.

Two hours later, I headed to the main theater for my final rehearsal. It would be my last public presentation before transferring to the Arctic research station.

But the moment I reached the backstage control area, I stopped in my tracks.

Elton and Lula were standing in front of the console, while the planetarium director stood beside them with an ingratiating smile.

The moment Lula saw me, her face lit up. "Betsy, I've never seen the backstage control room before, so Elton offered to show me around."

Elton approached me, his voice suddenly gentle. "Lula felt bad about what happened with the tour reservation this morning, so she came to clear things up with you.

"There's no need for you to give the public lecture today. We can show her around the exhibits together instead. You can give us a private tour."

Lula timidly tugged at his sleeve. "But won't that interfere with Betsy's work?"

Elton waved away her concern, and the director seized his chance to flatter them.

"Since Mr. Werner has requested it, I'll cancel today's public session."

He even ordered the control room staff to activate the star projections across the dome.

Lula shrilled like a child seeing something magical for the first time. She grabbed Elton's arm and shook it excitedly. "Wow, Elton, look! It's so beautiful!"

She pointed at the brightest nebula projected across the dome before turning to me.

"Betsy, what's that? It looks like a big clump of pink cotton!"

I kept my eyes on the control panel. "The Orion Nebula. M42."

"What about that one over there? The stars that form a W?" she asked, pointing in another direction with wide-eyed curiosity.

"Cassiopeia," I replied curtly.

Lula giggled and leaned even closer against Elton's chest.

"Elton, look at that reddish star! What does it mean? Does it symbolize eternal love? Betsy, tell us the romantic story behind it!"

Elton looked down at her with indulgent affection.

"It's rare for Lula to take an interest in astronomy. Why don't you explain it in simple terms she can understand?"

I closed the presentation notes on the desk, pressed my lips together, and said nothing.

"Why did you stop?" Elton frowned, his voice edged with irritation. "Lula asked you a question."

I unclipped my staff badge, placed it on the desk, and turned to the director.

"I resign. I won't be giving any more lectures."

He lunged at me and clamped both hands around my ankles."Betsy! I finally found you!"Screams erupted from the crowd. Security guards immediately drew their batons and rushed forward.I looked down at the man sprawled at my feet.It was a filthy vagrant, reeking of body odor and grime. His hair was matted into hard, tangled clumps, and his face was covered in bruises and patches of frostbitten skin. The guards struck him across the back with their batons."Get away from Dr. Hull!"Elton cried out in pain, but he refused to let go of me. Instead, he pulled a filthy, crumpled blueprint from inside his coat."Betsy, look! I've drawn up the plans for the observatory I'm building for you. Everything's ready. Construction can start right away! And I broke Lula's other leg. No one will ever come between us again!"He lifted his grime-streaked face toward me. Tears mingled with the dirt on his cheeks, leaving two clean streaks behind."Please forgive me, okay? I sacrificed my entire

"Your pocket change is worthless compared to real science. Take your stupid icebreaker and get out of my sight."I hung up before Elton could respond, then added his number to my block list.Harry stood beside me, watching the lights on the icebreaker gradually dim."He won't let this go easily," he said.I took a sip of my coffee. "Then let's see just how far he'll go."Elton's irrational obsession was exactly what I'd been counting on....Six months later, the Arctic entered the midnight sun period, bathing the frozen landscape in continuous daylight. Our nebula research project achieved a groundbreaking breakthrough, and major scientific journals around the world competed to feature our findings on their front pages.Meanwhile, Elton had become the laughingstock of Verolvale's business community.I came across the latest news about the Werner Group online. In a desperate attempt to force me home, Elton had halted the company's most profitable real estate development proje

The sharp crack of the slap echoed through the quiet room."I was wrong," Elton said bitterly. "The tattoo was fake. Lula used a temporary sticker and bribed the wedding planner to deceive me. I've already driven her out of Verolvale. She'll never show her face around us again."He clutched my snow boots with both hands. "Betsy, please. Come back with me and marry me, okay?"I looked down at his tear-streaked face and felt nothing but disgust. "You only came looking for me because your ego can't stand being dumped."I kicked his hands away and continued, "The moment you sided with Lula and humiliated me at our engagement party, we were over."Elton stared at me in disbelief. "You're throwing away years of our relationship over something so trivial?"He scrambled to his feet, his desperate pleading instantly giving way to anger. "Do you really have to be so heartless?"I pointed toward the heavy front door. "Get out!"He gritted his teeth and gestured at the sophisticated equipm

Elton snatched the file from his assistant, crumpling the papers in his tight grip. The cover page clearly showed a bank transfer between Lula and the wedding planner.Keeping his head down, Raymon quickly delivered the rest of his report."Ms. Buckley paid the wedding planner $300,000 to keep quiet about Ms. Hull canceling the wedding. And regarding the tattoo photo displayed on the big screen at the engagement party..."He hesitated briefly before continuing, "We checked Ms. Buckley's recent online purchase history. The tattoo was just a temporary waterproof sticker she bought online. She never had a real tattoo in the first place."The color drained from Elton's face. He slammed the file against Raymon's chest."Bring Lula here. Now!"Half an hour later, two burly security guards dragged Lula into the office. She glanced around in confusion, still trying to play innocent."Elton, why did you call me here?"Elton strode toward her, grabbed her by the hair, and yanked her hea

Elton stared at the shattered phone on the floor, his voice hoarse."Impossible."He shoved past the groomsmen and strode toward the elevator. Lula hurried after him in her high heels and grabbed his sleeve."Calm down. Betsy might just be throwing a tantrum. Maybe she's hiding at home and refusing to answer your calls."Elton shook off her hand."Get out of my way!"She stumbled sideways and crashed into the hallway wall.He didn't even look back.Instead, he turned to his assistant, who was struggling to keep up."Check every flight and train. Get all the security footage! Find her. Now!"...A month later, the Arctic research station had entered the polar night, plunging the region into almost perpetual darkness.I sat at the observation station, studying the fluctuating data on the screen, when my team lead pushed open the door and handed me a folder."The sensor in Sector B is malfunctioning. We'll have to collect today's data manually."I grabbed the recorder and go

Elton's face darkened."What are you throwing a fit over now? Do you have any idea how many strings I had to pull to get you this job?" he demanded through clenched teeth."And now you're just going to quit? You were only supposed to talk for a few minutes. It's practically second nature to you by now. Is this what your so-called love for astronomy amounts to?"I remained unfazed. "I do love astronomy, but my passion isn't there to entertain people or help you impress anyone."Elton's expression turned furious. "Lula is just a friend, and I'm offering you the title of Mrs. Werner. What more do you want from me?"I shook my head. "Save that title for someone else. I'm done."I turned away from his furious face and walked straight out of the planetarium. He'd turned even my last sanctuary into his personal playground. There was no reason for me to stay anymore.Once outside, I took out my phone and called the head of the Arctic research station."Hello, this is Betsy Hull. I've
