Adrian's POV

By the time I came out, the four people who had promised to wait for me were gone.

I didn't bother looking for them. I simply followed the crowd toward the parade route.

Kyle Lane stood on the lead float with three women around him, each dressed like a princess. He looked like he owned the world.

"I'm so jealous," a girl beside me whispered. "I heard you have to reserve a spot on that float a month in advance."

A month in advance.

I watched Serena Sullivan reach for Kyle's hand without hesitation.

And they'd still forgotten about me.

I looked away, expressionless. The laughing tourists around me felt like they belonged to a different world.

When the parade ended, the four of them finally found me just as I was about to leave.

"Adrian, where did you go?"

"Come on. We booked a restaurant. We're going to sing happy birthday to you!"

Serena grabbed my hand. Chloe Quinn and Vivian Yates nodded eagerly beside her.

"Yeah, Adrian. We've been planning this surprise forever."

Kyle came over smiling too.

For a second, I froze.

They had actually planned something for me?

They hadn't forgotten my birthday?

Serena pulled me all the way to the restaurant, only for the host to stop us at the entrance.

"I'm sorry. Your reservation is for four, and we can't add another chair to that table. You can wait for the next one to open up, though."

I stopped walking.

The tiny spark of hope I'd just felt made me look even more ridiculous now.

Serena blinked. "I must have counted wrong."

A humorless smile tugged at my mouth.

Right.

Serena Sullivan, the straight-A prodigy I had known since childhood, apparently couldn't count to five.

Kyle groaned. "We have to wait? I'm starving. Aren't you guys hungry?"

All three women turned toward me at the same time.

Their hesitation said everything.

"Maybe..."

"I'll go," I cut in. "Enjoy dinner."

Serena brightened immediately. She hooked a finger around mine, cupped my face, and rose on tiptoe to kiss me.

"You're the best, Adrian.

"Besides, you said you're cutting right now."

Chloe and Vivian were already walking Kyle inside.

"Just wait out front for us," one of them called. "We won't be long."

I stood there and watched the four of them laugh together through the glass.

December had never felt so cold.

I let out a quiet laugh and finally unclenched my fist.

Then, instead of waiting, I turned against the cheerful crowd and walked away alone.

There was the hiking trip, when a snowstorm shut down the mountain. The last gondola cabin down only seated four people.

Serena had bought exactly four tickets.

They promised they'd send someone back for me once they reached the bottom.

So I waited and waited.

By nightfall, I could hear wolves in the distance, and no one had come.

A patrol team eventually found me and brought me down.

When I finally got home, the four of them were watching a movie.

"Adrian? Why are you only getting back now?"

"We thought you were upstairs asleep."

The confusion on their faces was real.

They'd forgotten I existed.

Then there was our graduation trip.

They wanted to travel overseas. I was running a high fever and didn't speak the language, so I didn't want to go.

They insisted. They swore they would take care of me.

At our very first stop, they left me behind on a train.

I couldn't communicate with anyone. My bag was stolen, and then I got shot.

I almost died in a foreign country.

By the time the four of them returned from their trip, the embassy had already got me home.

They stared at me in shock.

"Wait. Why are you home? We thought you were with us."

I had been missing for more than ten days.

They hadn't even noticed.

Then they kept showing me beach photos of Serena, Chloe, and Vivian in bikinis clustered around Kyle.

The winter wind dragged me back to the present.

I took out my phone and called my father.

"Dad, you said that once I turned twenty-four, I could choose whether to stay at headquarters or train at one of our overseas branches, right?

"I've decided. I want to go overseas."

After I hung up, fireworks burst across the sky.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY appeared in glittering letters.

Under it were four sets of initials. Theirs, not mine.

I laughed quietly.

Then I whispered to myself, "Happy birthday, Adrian."

I listened without expression. Her eyes were full of emotion. Mine were empty.Serena noticed. The hope in her face dimmed. After a long silence, I gave a small nod."I heard you."Then I turned to leave. She caught my wrist. Her grip was light.Much gentler than the day she had grabbed me and ordered me to apologize to Kyle. That only made it feel more ironic."Don't go." Her eyes were wet now. "Please."Adrian, I don't want this to be over."She lowered her gaze."I fired Kyle. I'll never have anything to do with him again. I swear. Please believe me."I watched her for two seconds. Then I pulled my hand free."I don't. You told me once that you'd love me forever too. So your forever only lasted ten years?"Regret twisted across her face.I took a slow breath. All I felt was exhaustion."Stop looking for me, Serena. Stop interfering with my life. There is no future for us."I walked away. She didn't follow. She only stood there staring after me, pale and shake

Adrian's POVAt the same time, an ocean away, I had just landed. My phone was flooded with messages from all three women.Serena alone had sent more than a hundred.I didn't answer any of them.I blocked every number and deleted the threads.I'd left in such a hurry that I'd forgotten to take out the trash.Mom video-called me."Those three girls came looking for you. They went to the estate first. Serena even got into a car accident."I nodded. Before, I would've dropped everything and rushed to her side. Now I only acknowledged the information.Whether Serena lived or died was no longer my concern."Oh, and I formally ended the engagement with the Sullivan family for you.""Thanks, Mom."After we hung up, I went to the apartment I had already bought near our branch and unpacked.Only then did I finally breathe. That rotten relationship couldn't drain me anymore.A few days later, I heard something surprising.Serena had fired Kyle.Hadn't she practically worshippe

For one terrible second, the world around Serena seemed to lose all its air.She couldn't breathe."Adrian..."Chloe and Vivian went still beside her.None of them had ever truly imagined that someone who had been alive yesterday could simply be gone today. If Adrian was dead, how could they ever face his family? How could they live with themselves?Serena lunged toward the stretcher and pulled back the sheet with shaking hands.A stranger's face lay beneath it.Relief hit so hard that her knees nearly gave out.Chloe and Vivian caught her."Thank God," Chloe whispered. "It's not Adrian."Then she seemed to think of something."What if he left on his own after we drove away?"Serena shook her head. She didn't know. But she desperately wanted that to be true. The search eventually ended. They never found any sign of Adrian. That small fact became the only hope they had left. The three women got into the car and rushed toward the Carter estate.Serena floored it the

Third-person POVThe group chat went silent. After a long time, Chloe finally typed, "Did Adrian get in the car last night?"Vivian answered, "I don't remember. I didn't notice."Serena was already behind the wheel when she saw the messages. Her hands started shaking. She had forgotten too.She hadn't noticed at all.Ever since she saw the morning news about the mudslide, unease had been crawling under her skin. She had called Adrian three times. He hadn't answered once. That had never happened before.Serena shut her eyes hard, her lips pressed tight. Then she remembered the vehicle camera. She pulled up the footage from the night before. On the screen, rain lashed across the estate while Chloe and Vivian rushed Kyle into the car.Behind them stood one lonely figure: Adrian.Serena watched herself drive away with him still outside. For a second, she forgot how to breathe. She had left Adrian there. The radio kept reporting new casualties from the mudslide, each upd

I sat off to the side while my phone lit up with a reminder to check in for my flight the next morning.Serena walked over and looked down at the screen."What are you looking at?"I locked it at once."Nothing."Kyle was laughing with Chloe and Vivian nearby.I held out my hand."Your Kyle is happy now. Can I have my locket back?"Serena's brows tightened almost imperceptibly at the words your Kyle.A moment later, her expression smoothed out.She took the locket from her pocket and handed it over.I'd barely reached for it when Kyle slammed into me.The locket hit the floor. It shattered. My breath caught. For a few seconds, I could only stare at the broken pieces scattered across the floor. Then I crouched down slowly.Kyle apologized immediately."Adrian, I'm sorry. I didn't see you."The three women reacted as if I might attack him."It's not your fault. He should have held on to it properly."Chloe pulled a few balloons from the corner."Come on. Forget abou

Kyle resigned almost immediately.By that same afternoon, he was officially Serena's personal assistant. To celebrate, the three women rented an entire private estate for him."I'm not going."I stared at the invitation on my phone and declined without hesitation.Apparently, that upset Kyle too.Serena spent half the day soothing him with kisses and sweet words, then came straight to my house. She blocked my bedroom door."Can you stop making a scene?"I sighed."What exactly am I doing? Am I not allowed to say no?"For years, it had always been the same.If I refused Kyle anything, if Kyle felt even slightly hurt, it somehow became my fault. No one ever asked what I wanted. No one ever cared whether I was happy. At graduation, the three of them bought flowers for Kyle. They forgot me.Kyle insisted on giving me his bouquet. I refused. So the three women decided the best solution was to keep me out of the graduation photos entirely, just so Kyle would never have to l
