Chapter 4

Penulis: Anonymous
Over the next few days, Libby scrambled tirelessly for Louie's sake.

Her main focus, of course, was finding every possible way to force me out of hiding.

After mulling it over, she headed off in a rage to the boarding school I had previously arranged for Trista.

It really was a good school, boasting top-tier educational resources and facilities.

It was just a pity that Trista had only been enrolled for three days before Louie revoked her admission.

Those tens of thousands of dollars in tuition fees naturally ended up straight in his pocket.

Ignoring the staff member who was trying to stop her, Libby barged right into the principal's office and slammed her palm onto the desk. "Where is Trista Hayes? Get her out here right now!"

The principal blinked, visibly taken aback. "Trista Hayes? She dropped out years ago."

"Dropped out?"

Libby frowned at those words. When the realization clicked, she let out a cold sneer. "I really underestimated Kieran. He actually had the heart to pull that bastard out of a top-notch school like this just to hide from me."

Furious, she grabbed her phone and roared into the speaker, "Kieran Hayes! I'm giving you one hour to bring that bastard to me!"

Naturally, she received no reply.

She bombarded me with hundreds of unread messages, but every single one went unanswered.

"Daddy, is Mommy looking for me?" Trista asked, looking up at me.

Before I could answer, she suddenly slipped out of my grip and floated down. "I want Mommy to hug me—"

"Come back!" I lunged to grab her, only to watch Trista pass right through Libby's body.

She clung to her shoulder, calling out to Libby in vain.

I dragged Trista back to my side, my chest aching with pain.

How ridiculous. The grass on my grave was already six feet tall, yet she was still trying to use a dead person to threaten another dead person.

When no response came, Libby's expression twisted in rage.

It wasn't until her phone rang with a call from Louie that her expression softened. Her eyes brimmed with tender concern. "Louie? What's wrong?"

She stepped out of the principal's office to find a quiet, secluded spot.

On the other end of the line, Louie's flustered voice came through quickly. "Libby, the police are starting to gather evidence. Have you found Kieran yet?"

Libby's face fell at his words, but she forced herself to sound composed to reassure him. "Not yet, but don't worry. I will never let anything happen to you. I'll turn the Earth upside down to drag Kieran out!"

After making that fierce promise, she got into her car and sped off.

I was very familiar with the route she was taking. It was the way to the local community office.

Even after being released, former inmates had to register with the local community office for regular supervision.

She was hoping to track me down through their records.

Sure enough, Libby pulled up outside the community office and barged straight inside, clutching a stack of bills.

Before the receptionist could speak, Libby threw the money right in her face. "You have a guy named Kieran Hayes in your files, right? Pull up his records for me now!"

The other staff members exchanged glances, their faces darkening with anger.

"This is an office, not a place for you to throw your weight around! If you need something, follow the proper procedures. Who are you trying to impress by flaunting your money like that?"

Libby's face flushed with anger at the sharp rebuke.

Realizing that they wouldn't budge an inch, she reluctantly prepped the required documents and shoved them across the counter.

"I'm Kieran's wife. I can't reach him right now, so check his current address for me."

The staff member sneered but still took the materials to pull up the relevant file.

A moment later, she let out a quiet gasp. "Kieran Hayes passed away two years ago. You're his wife, and you didn't even know?"

Libby froze dead in her tracks, completely dumbfounded. "W-What did you say?"

I held Trista's hand and floated in front of her to savor the shock in her eyes.

So, she wasn't completely indifferent after all. I had assumed she'd take the news of my death with complete calm or even relief.

"I said the Kieran you're looking for passed away shortly after getting out of prison. The hospital and funeral home made several calls to his family back then, but no one ever picked up. His ashes are still stored there. If no one claims them soon, they'll be disposed of."

Libby's lips trembled slightly.

She was probably remembering those phone calls now.

Back then, the moment she heard my name mentioned on the line, she assumed it was just another excuse for me to pester her, so she always hung up without a second thought.

Eventually, annoyed by the persistent calls, she blocked the number.

Libby shook her head and frantically dug through her purse. "No way! Just last month, he was still… still…"

Her hands froze mid-search.

She stared at the supplementary card statement on her phone. The very last transaction was dated April 15, 2023—the day I died.

A sudden silence fell over her. Then, with trembling fingers, she gestured for the staff member to scroll down. "Then… What about Trista Hayes? Where is she now? I remember enrolling her in a boarding school, but maybe her father—"

"She's dead too," the staff member said, cutting her off and showing her the monitor.

"A hit-and-run. The driver is still at large. She died even earlier than Kieran, while he was still serving his sentence. Also, the records show her withdrawal wasn't processed by Kieran. It was done by a man named Louie Fraser."

Now it was Libby's turn to be completely shattered. Her eyes were glued to the screen, but she couldn't utter a single word.

Seeing her reaction, the staff member couldn't help sneering. "You didn't even know your husband and daughter were dead after so long? What kind of wife are you?"

I didn't know how best to describe the look on Libby's face right now.

To put it simply, it was a magnificent, ever-shifting storm of horror and disbelief.

Her face turned pale, then dark, before she snatched her bag and bolted out the door.

As she ran, the staff member's contemptuous voice echoed behind her. "Both father and daughter were skin and bones before they died. She's rich enough to throw money around, but she didn't spend a dime on her family. Now that they're dead, she shows up looking for them. What a joke!"

A sudden silence descended over the grounds. It was an endless, heavy quiet. The sound of the wind moving through the pines became the only sound of mourning in this forgotten place.Libby's body slumped against Trista's headstone, growing cold and rigid. Her face, once radiant and later etched with agony and struggle, now held only a bizarre, almost eerie serenity of release. The poison had stolen her last breath, taking with it her boundless regret and pain. She was dead. This time, she was truly gone.Trista and I floated beside her body, watching in silence.Trista's large eyes overflowed with an innocent, uncomprehending grief. She seemed to grasp what had happened, yet understood none of it at all.She simply felt a deep, instinctive loss."Daddy, Mommy… isn't moving anymore," she whispered, her translucent little hand clutching tightly at the edge of my coat. The snow fell harder and gradually blanketed Libby's body. Before her final spark of consciousness extingui

From her duffel bag, Libby pulled out the tiny, pale yellow sweater she had carefully preserved, though it was showing its age, and the photo album with its worn, frayed edges.Clutching them tightly, she curled up on the dust-covered bed, just as she had done all those years ago when she first learned the truth. This time, Libby didn't cry. She simply kept her eyes open, staring blankly at the mottled water stains on the ceiling through a sleepless night.Early the next morning, she got up at first light.Carefully and almost devoutly, he wrapped the little sweater and the album back up and tucked them into her bag.She washed her face, wiped down her dusty clothes with a wet rag, and smoothed her hair. Then, she walked out of the house that held her life's sweetest and most painful memories and never looked back. After wandering the streets for three days, Libby finally tracked down the place where Trista and I rested. She went to a flower shop, used what little cash she had

The noise of the courtroom finally faded into silence.Louie was convicted on multiple counts—attempted murder, hit-and-run causing death, bribing public officials, and forging evidence—and sentenced to death. In the end, those eyes that had once overflowed with fake devotion held only complete desolation. As for Libby, true to her promise in court, she faced an independent judicial investigation. The shady transactions on her company's books and the commercial tactics she had run in the gray area were all brought to light.Later, she was sentenced to five years in prison for commercial fraud and tax evasion.Five years seemed brief compared to Louie's execution.Yet compared to the torment her soul would bear for the rest of her life, those five years were perhaps merely the beginning.Trista and I floated high above the courtroom, watching as the bailiffs cuffed her hands and led her away.Libby didn't look back at Louie, nor did she glance at anyone in the gallery. Her gaz

Louie couldn't believe that Libby actually admitted it."However…"Libby shot Louie a piercing glare. "What does any of that have to do with his crime of attempted murder?"Does the fact that I may have made other mistakes erase the reality that he tried to kill me? Does it overturn the fact that he ran down my daughter, framed my ex-husband, and swindled my fortune?"He destroyed my family in the most cruel way possible, murdered my loved ones, and in the end, tried to take my life! Now that the evidence against him is undeniable, he's still resorting to such despicable tactics to escape justice and turn the accusations back on me!"Her voice rose, echoing through the courtroom, laden with an accumulation of bloody accusations and tears."Your Honor, members of the jury! The person standing trial here today is Louie Fraser! It was his cruelty, greed, and hypocrisy that brought about this entire tragedy! The person the law should punish is this murderer! Not the victim he dragged

The judge frowned. "Ms. Burton, please remain silent.""No, I have to speak!" Libby pulled a voice recorder from her bag. "This conversation took place at his residence. He admitted it himself."Through the courtroom speakers, Louie's lazy voice echoed clearly. "So what if I ran her down? She was a worthless nobody anyway. A couple grand was all it took to toss her aside. Isn't that exactly how you handled it back then?"Libby collapsed to her knees. Her forehead was pressed flat against the icy marble floor.I watched her back heave violently, yet not a single sob escaped her throat.Louie thrashed frantically against his restraints, his handcuffs clanking loudly. "No! It's doctored! This bitch would do anything to frame me! The metallic stench of blood in the stairwell still seemed to linger in my senses. The sight of Libby lying on the ice-cold floor overlapped with the vision of Trista on her final hospital bed.Death was a final destination for me, but for her, it had become a sentence left hanging in the balance. However, Libby didn't die.The wail of ambulance sirens shattered the quiet of the early morning. She still had a weak pulse when they lifted her onto the stretcher.Louie's vicious shove had broken multiple bones, left her with a severe concussion, and caused heavy blood loss, but it hadn't taken her life outright.Perhaps even fate decided that the debts she owed weren't something she could settle with a quick death.Trista and I followed her to the hospital. We watched through the glass as doctors rushed around the operating room, treating the horrifying injuries all over her body.Louie had fled in such a hurry that he hadn't even cleaned up the crime scene.
