JULIA

Classes ended with the usual noise of students rushing out of the building, laughing, comparing notes, talking about weekend plans. I hugged my books to my chest and walked slowly toward the school gate, trying to blend in with the crowd. A few boys passed by and nodded at me, ever since I wrote my name on the dance club list, people seemed… friendlier. Curious. Some were even bold enough to wave.

I ignored them politely.

There was only one man I wanted to see today.

And the moment I stepped outside the gate, I froze.

A black Lucchesi car was parked right in front. The windows were tinted, but I knew the shape, the presence, heavy, powerful, impossible to mistake.

The door opened.

Marcus stepped out.

Some girls near me squeaked; others stared. The guys looked stunned. Marcus didn’t even glance at them, his eyes locked on me instantly, hungry and warm and territorial. My knees turned weak for a second.

He walked around the car with that confident stride of his, the one that made

MarcusI knew I was early. The engine purred softly beneath me as the Lucchesi car came to a stop in front of the modest house—too modest for someone like her, too small to have held everything Julia had endured. The place looked peaceful enough. Clean. Quiet. Almost fragile. My men stayed back. I stepped out alone. This wasn’t a battlefield. This wasn’t a negotiation. And for once, I didn’t need fear to precede me.The door opened before I could knock.Julia stood there, framed by the warm glow of the house behind her, hair slightly loose, eyes bright in a way I hadn’t seen when she lived under her father’s roof. She looked… lighter. Like she could breathe here. And when she saw me, her lips curved into that small, unguarded smile that always disarmed me.“You’re early,” she said.“I know.” I held her gaze. “I didn’t want to be late.”Her cheeks warmed faintly, and she stepped aside to let me in.The scent inside the house was simple—soap, tea, something floral. A life untouched by b

MARCUSI rarely go anywhere without expecting resistance.Enemies hide behind smiles. Allies hide knives. Even silence, in my world, is never innocent. But her mother’s house was different. The moment my car slowed in front of the modest gate, something in my chest eased—just a fraction. Enough to notice. Enough to irritate me.I stepped out first, adjusting my coat more out of habit than need. The guards stayed back. This wasn’t a battlefield. Not tonight. The door opened before I even knocked.Julia stood there. Not dressed for me. Not guarded. Not careful.Just… happy. Her hair was loose, falling over her shoulders in soft waves, her eyes bright in a way that had nothing to do with luxury or fear or obligation. She froze when she saw me—then smiled so openly it felt like a hit straight to the ribs.“Marcus,” she said, breathless, like she’d been waiting.I didn’t realize I’d stopped breathing until I exhaled.“There you are,” I said quietly. She stepped forward without thinking, an

JULIAI heard the engine before I saw the car.It was impossible not to recognize it—the low, smooth purr of something expensive, controlled, powerful. It didn’t belong in this quiet street where afternoons smelled like laundry soap and fried garlic, where neighbors sat outside on plastic chairs and waved at passing tricycles. My heart skipped anyway.I was still laughing when Phoebe nudged me with her elbow. “That’s him,” she said, grinning like she’d just won something.I turned toward the window just as the black Lucchesi car rolled to a stop in front of my mother’s house. Two men stepped out first, scanning the area with practiced precision. Then the back door opened.Marcus stepped out like the street belonged to him.He wasn’t wearing a suit this time—just a dark shirt, sleeves rolled up, watch glinting faintly under the sun. Somehow, that made him look even more dangerous. Even more out of place. And yet… he fit into my life now in a way that felt terrifyingly natural. My mom p

PHOEBEIf someone had told me a month ago that I’d see Julia laughing like this—head tipped back, eyes bright, cheeks flushed with happiness—I would’ve laughed right in their face.Yet here we were.We were sitting beside her mother’s bed, sunlight pouring in through the half-open window, dust motes floating lazily in the air. The room smelled faintly of chamomile tea and clean sheets. Julia sat cross-legged on the chair, animated for once, hands moving as she spoke. Not shrinking. Not apologizing for existing.Alive.“And then,” she said, lowering her voice dramatically, “he just—just stepped in front of me.”I leaned forward, already grinning. “Like a wall. A very expensive wall.”Julia snorted despite herself. “Phoebe.”“No, no, I’m serious,” I insisted, waving my hand. “You should’ve seen him, Auntie Scribonia. He stopped Lady Livia’s hand mid-air like it was nothing. I thought she’d faint.”Her mother’s lips twitched, eyes warm with amusement. “Is that so?”Julia nodded, eyes shi

MARCUSThe warehouse smelled like oil, metal, and fear.Fear was always the strongest scent.I adjusted my cuffs slowly, methodically, even as the man kneeling in front of me sobbed so hard his shoulders shook. The floor beneath him was already wet, not from blood yet, but from sweat and spilled liquor. My men stood in a loose circle, silent, disciplined. They knew better than to interrupt when I was thinking. The chip lay on the table between us.Small. Black. Unassuming.Every syndicate on the continent wanted it. Tracking encryption, offshore vault access, biometric overrides. The kind of thing that could shift power without firing a single bullet. And this idiot thought he could sell it twice.I picked it up between my fingers, turning it once, then twice.“Do you know,” I said calmly, “how many men have died tonight because you hesitated?”He shook his head violently. “P-Please, Sir Lucchesi, I swear, I didn’t mean—”I crouched in front of him so we were eye level. His eyes were

MARCUSBlood never bothered me.Not the sight of it. Not the smell. Not the way it pooled too slowly on concrete, as if the ground itself hesitated to accept what I gave it. Violence was language in my world. Efficient. Final. Honest in a way people never were.Tonight was no different. The warehouse squatted near the docks, lights dimmed, guards posted too confidently for men who thought they were untouchable. That alone told me they had something worth stealing. Or dying for.The chip.Every syndicate wanted it. A palm-sized piece of tech that could crack encrypted ledgers, reroute offshore accounts, erase entire identities. Power compressed into silicon. Whoever held it decided who existed and who disappeared.I stepped out of the car, coat heavy on my shoulders, sea air sharp with salt and oil. My men fanned out without a word. They knew better than to speak unless I asked. Fear made them disciplined. Respect kept them loyal.Inside, the warehouse smelled of rust and sweat. Five m
