Chapter 39

Alex finished breakfast in a blur of polite words and softer hope. Jenny hummed at his side, setting the teacup down with practiced care, while Hailey mentioned a supplier and the new schedule for the week. He nodded, smiled, said all the right things while the world inside his head tumbled.

“I’m going upstairs to freshen up,” he told Jenny, forcing steadiness into his voice. Jenny’s smile faltered in that way that made his chest tighten, but she nodded and Hailey looked relieved.

In his room, he shed the stiffness of the morning. The shower was a rush of hot water over tired skin, the kind that tries to wash the weight away but only thins it. He pulled on clothes without thinking, fingers fumbling with cufflinks like a man tying off a noose.

His phone buzzed then, a single notification flaring like a bell. He reached for it, towel draped over one shoulder, and the headline bled into his sight: Wells Corporation announces new CEO.

CHAPTER 41Sean walked into the mansion, tense and restless. He had left moments after Alex walked out of the company. From Sean’s expression alone, one could tell he was rattled.'Why the hell did he have to show up?'Alex’s presence had ruined the rest of Sean’s day. He couldn’t spend another second in that company after seeing him. 'And what would happen when Violet finally decided to step into the CEO position, and the two of them met again?'Sean shook his head in dismay, trying to get rid of the thought. He dipped his hand into his right trouser pocket, brought out his phone, and tapped the call option.“Sir,” Riele’s voice came through quietly.“I won’t be coming in. Postpone any meetings I have this afternoon.”“Yes, sir.”The call ended with a soft beep.Sean made his way further into the mansion. “Where the hell is everyone?” he muttered as he climbed the stairs toward his room.He was halfway down the hall when he heard voices coming from two rooms before his. Chapter 40“Mr. Vanguard,” Sean said as he approached Alex. His steps were steady, his hand extended for a handshake. Outwardly, he looked composed—calm even but his eyes were sharp like a polished blade. His gaze alone was enough to intimidate anyone. But not Alex. And that shocked him.Alex stared straight into his eyes without a flicker of fear. Their hands met in a firm shake.“Please, be seated,” Sean said again as Alex rose briefly for the handshake. They sat opposite each other.“Mr. Vanguard, your reputation precedes you,” Sean said, trying to sound as official as possible, careful not to reveal that he knew anything more about Alex than he should.“Thank you, Mr…?”“Sean,” he supplied quickly.“Okay…”“I must say, I didn’t expect to see you here, let alone without a business appointment,” Sean continued. “Your arrival was… surprising.”“I know,” Alex replied calmly. “I didn’t have time to schedule anything. But I wouldn’t be here if my reason wasn’t justifiable.”“Oh?” Sean r

  • From Ruin to Revenge    Breaking news

Chapter 38 Liam stepped onto the manicured terrace of the Wells mansion, the morning sun cutting across the marble like a blade. He paused at the bottom of the steps, heart still a slow, erratic drum from the night before. The house smelled of lemon polish and something sweeter — baked bread, or maybe the perfume that clung to the house like a promise. He had rehearsed what he would say on the drive over, but rehearsals always melted when he stood in front of the door.He knocked anyway. The heavy door opened before he could knock again. Josephine peered out, her brows knitted into thin lines of suspicion. Even in the bright daylight she looked as if she expected shadows to crawl out of the corners. The relief that had softened her features when Selena was locked up was despaired by witting fear.“Liam,” she said, voice tight. “You came. Don’t stand there; come in. Someone might be watching.” Her hands moved quick and nervous, the habit of checking locks cutting across the air like a

Chapter 37 Alex held his phone, his grip tightening. He needed to reach out to Selena needed to apologize for failing her, and for failing her daughter, his wife. He closed his eyes for a moment before getting up from the bed. Walking over to the drawer, he pulled out another phone. The phone he had been using recently had limited connection. It had no access to the internet, he had programmed it that way. None of his business associates’ contacts or information were on it. That phone was strictly for necessities: communicating with Hailey, or receiving the messages and calls his father tormented him with. His real phone, the one with full access to news, work, and everything else was switched off and locked away in a drawer. He was finally ready to reconnect with the world. “I have to talk to Hailey after breakfast,” he muttered as he switched on the phone. Alex could feel his heart pounding. Turning on the phone felt like a signal an announcement that he was officially ready
