Chapter 2

Author: Cool Husky
After the funeral, everyone returned to Grandma's house.

It was a modest, two-bedroom place and only about 800 square feet in size. The living room was packed wall to wall with people.

Aunt Fiona played the gracious hostess, offering everyone drinks. It looked like she was entertaining a bunch of honored guests.

I leaned against the wall, watching her. Grandma's voice, which I'd heard from the emerald bracelet earlier, kept echoing in my head.

"She took the bank card for the account with my pension payouts. She didn't let me have my medication on time."

Aunt Fiona was also around 50 years old, but she took good care of herself. She'd dyed her hair a fashionable shade of brown and gotten it permed. A gold bracelet dangled from her wrist, and her nails were perfectly manicured.

And Grandma?

During the last year of her life, she continued to wear the same worn cotton coat she'd owned for over a decade.

I slipped the emerald bracelet into my pocket and sat down beside Mom.

"Mom, I need to tell you something."

"Not now." Her eyes were still red, and her voice was hoarse. "We'll talk when we get home."

"It can't wait." I looked straight into her eyes. "I took Grandma's emerald bangle."

Mom jerked her head up. "You took it? That was your grandma's—"

"She wanted me to have it." Lowering my voice, I leaned close to her ear. "Mom, Grandma spoke to me."

Mom froze. She scrutinized my face, as if to check whether I'd lost my mind.

"Have you forgotten that ever since I was a kid, I've been able to hear voices whenever I touch certain things?" I asked.

Mom was somewhat aware of my unique ability. But she always chalked it up to me having an overactive imagination and never took it seriously.

"When I was little, I touched the cane that belonged to our old neighbor, Mrs. Lane Senior. I told you the cane said her grandson had stolen her pension money. You slapped me for making things up. Then what happened? The police ended up arresting her grandson," I reminded her.

Mom kept quiet. She still remembered that.

"I touched Grandma's bracelet," I said before taking a deep breath. "Grandma said she wants you to have the house. She said Uncle Michael was a terrible son and that he hit her. Aunt Fiona took her bank card for the account with her pension payouts, and when she got sick, Aunt Fiona didn't even let her have her medication on time."

Mom's lips started quivering. "S-stop making things up."

"Why would I be making these things up? Just think, Mom. Remember when you visited Grandma during the holidays last year? Didn't you notice a large bruise on her wrist?"

Mom's expression stiffened. She had indeed spotted a bruise on Grandma's wrist last year, but at the time, Uncle Michael said Grandma had fallen on her own. At the time, Grandma nodded and said that was the case.

"Grandma did that out of fear!" My voice was shaking. "She was scared that Uncle Michael would stop taking care of her, and she was scared of burdening you, too. That was why she never said a word. The only thing she could do was leave a message… saying that the house should go to you."

Mom gripped the tissue so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Tears started rolling down her cheeks.

"I knew it… I knew Michael was awful and couldn't be trusted…" she mumbled.

"Then why didn't you say something sooner?" I asked.

"I knew about it, but I was just too scared to say anything…"

Mom covered her face and sobbed so hard that her shoulders were shaking, but she dared not cry out loud. There were still quite a lot of people around, and she was afraid someone might hear her.

I pulled her into a hug and patted her on the back. "Don't be scared, Mom. I'm here. We'll fight for the house."

Still in my arms, she nodded. Her head barely moved, but it was just enough for me to feel it.

The verdict was issued on a bright, sunny day. The court ruled in Mom's favor. The house would be divided according to the inheritance laws, with half going to each heir. The 50 thousand dollars Uncle Michael had withdrawn, along with the remaining balance in Grandma's pension account, had to be returned to us after deducting an appropriate amount for reasonable expenses.Mom also got Grandma's emerald bracelet.Uncle Michael didn't appeal the judgment.Once we walked out of the courthouse, Mom stood on the steps and stared at the sky for a long while. "Cassie, how I wish your grandma could see this. She'd be so happy."I took the bracelet out of my pocket and slipped it onto her wrist. "I'm sure she's watching us now."Mom glanced down at the bracelet, and her tears fell."I'm sorry, Mom. I've been a pushover my entire life, and you suffered because of that."She was speaking to Grandma. I placed my hand on her shoulder and said nothing. We ended up buying out Uncle Michael's

On the day of the trial, Uncle Michael brought an entire posse with him. Around eight of the extended family members filled up the gallery, looking like they'd come to intimidate Mom into submission.Mom was a little nervous. Her palms were covered in sweat. I squeezed her hand and said, "Don't be scared. We have evidence to back us up."Mr. Hudson started by laying out our claims. We were requesting that Grandma's estate be divided according to the inheritance laws, including the property and the money that had been taken from her accounts. Then he presented three key pieces of evidence. The first was Grandma's handwritten letter. The handwriting authentication report confirmed that it had been written by Grandma herself. The letter clearly stated that half of the house should go to Mom. It also recorded that Uncle Michael had taken money from her account and that Aunt Fiona had withheld her medication.Uncle Michael's lawyer raised an objection, claiming that the handwritten le

On the third day after the lawsuit was officially filed, Aunt Fiona struck first. She posted a lengthy essay in the family group chat."Monica has completely forgotten the meaning of family! The dirt on her mom's grave hasn't even settled yet, and she's already taking her own brother to court to fight over the inheritance!"Michael and I spent years looking after Mom. Why doesn't she consider all the time and effort we put into that, huh? All she cares about is money!"And her daughter, Cassandra, is the biggest ingrate I know. Her grandma has always doted on her since she was a baby, but now? She's coming after her own uncle! Just what did we do to end up with relatives like them?"The group chat exploded instantly. Aunts, uncles, and a litany of distant relatives popped up, and the overwhelming majority of them took Uncle Michael's side."Monica, it hasn't been long since your mom passed on, and you're already causing such a scene! How is this appropriate?""Michael spent eight

After Uncle Michael slammed his fists on the table, the atmosphere in the mediation room dropped below freezing.Ms. White had to rap her knuckles on the table and call for everyone to calm down. "I need you to watch your temper and speak properly, Mr. Shaw."Uncle Michael took a deep breath. He forced a smile onto his face, but it looked more like a grimace. "Monica, we're siblings. Why do you need to take things to the extremes? Alright, how about this? I'll share the house 50-50 with you, okay?"Mom looked at me, and I shook my head. "This isn't just about the house, Uncle Michael. How much of Grandma's pension payouts is left? And what about the 50 thousand dollars taken from her bank account? We should be splitting these, too."Uncle Michael's face twitched. "Y-you want to go through all the accounts?""Everything should be checked, of course." I pushed over the list Mr. Hudson had prepared. "The bank card for the account with Grandma's pension payout was taken from her eight

I hired a lawyer, Edgar Hudson, the father of a college classmate of mine. He had three decades of experience with civil litigation cases and specialized in inheritance disputes. After reading Grandma's handwritten letter and the withdrawal records from her passbook, Mr. Hudson adjusted his glasses and said, "The evidence isn't definitively conclusive yet, but it's enough for us to file a case. Although the letter itself isn't notarized, we can get handwriting analysis done on it to prove that it was your grandma who wrote it."As for the bank withdrawal records, that's even easier—you need a person's Social Security card and a letter of authorization or power of attorney before you can withdraw money on their behalf. In the absence of such supporting documents, it counts as misappropriation of the funds."I suggest we try mediation first. And if that doesn't work, we can file the case in court."The mediation was set up for three days later, to be held at the mediator's office. Un

The next day, Uncle Michael threw the first stone. He called Mom and told her that Grandma's passbook was missing before questioning whether she had taken it.Mom was with me when the call came in. The moment she heard those words, her face went pale."I didn't take it! I've never even seen Mom's passbook!"Uncle Michael's icy voice came through the phone. "50 thousand dollars is missing from Mom's account, Monica. You took it when you were sorting through her things yesterday, didn't you?""Michael Shaw! You were the one who withdrew the 50 thousand dollars!" I snatched the phone from Mom's hand. "The remark in the passbook clearly indicated that you took the money. The bank has the records too, you know. Do you seriously think you can pin this on my mother?"After a few seconds of silence, Uncle Michael snarled, "You think you're all grown up now, huh, Cassandra Quinn? How dare you talk to your uncle like that? I'm warning you—if you took the passbook, return it at once, and I'
