Chapter 363

Autor: Salted Orange Juice
But just then, a faint, razor-thin whistle of displaced air cut through the graveyard.

The pain Gavin had braced for never came.

He opened his eyes on instinct.

The once-unstoppable tree-thing had frozen mid-motion. Its raised arm hung suspended in the air, and a thin green line appeared across its neck.

A second later, the tree-thing's leaf-covered head rolled to the ground like an overripe melon. No blood sprayed from the wound, only dark green sap seeping from the severed neck.

Raymond remembered him. That Hemaysian man, the one who'd looked at him with that flat, dismissive stare, like he was staring down an insect. If not for that man, it would never have ended up like this. It wanted revenge. It wanted to tear his limbs off, one by one, and feed on them."Ptooey!"Sam spat out a mouthful of blood, his eyes burning with hatred. "You're some half-breed freak between man and tree, and you think you're worthy of Jake?!""Is that so?" Raymond's ghostly fire flared violently. Countless vines lifted slowly, tips aimed at the short-haired woman and her men suspended in the air, and at Gavin and Sam on the ground."Then I'll just kill you all first... and force him out here."Looking at the dense forest of sharpened vine-tips, despair settled over everyone's faces. The short-haired woman closed her eyes. Larke and Parker wore expressions thick with frustration.Gavin, hands trembling, pulled out the last cigarette he had left and lit it with shaking fingers.

Her core ability was Mysticism: Assassin (Tier 2), granting not just invisibility, but a massive boost to speed and burst power. She moved like a reaper gliding through shadow, closing in on the towering tree-demon without a sound: Raymond.Raymond's twin flames of ghostly fire didn't so much as flicker, as if her disappearance meant nothing to it at all.Just as the short-haired woman crept to its left side, her dagger poised to strike, Raymond's wooden maw split open, letting out a bone-chilling shriek."Found you."The ground beneath it exploded outward, and a mass of thick vines burst up like striking serpents, sealing off the entire space to her left in an instant."What?!"The short-haired woman's expression twisted in shock, her invisibility broken as she was forced back into view. Her reflexes saved her, though, her dagger flashing in a blur, slicing through the incoming vines.Green sap sprayed from the severed vines, but more of them surged in from every direction at

But just then, a faint, razor-thin whistle of displaced air cut through the graveyard. The pain Gavin had braced for never came.He opened his eyes on instinct. The once-unstoppable tree-thing had frozen mid-motion. Its raised arm hung suspended in the air, and a thin green line appeared across its neck.A second later, the tree-thing's leaf-covered head rolled to the ground like an overripe melon. No blood sprayed from the wound, only dark green sap seeping from the severed neck. The massive, headless body swayed once, then crashed to the ground."What..."Sam and Gavin were both utterly stunned. It was dead? That terrifying monster had been taken down in a single stroke, just like that?As the two men stared in shock, the air beside the tree-thing's body rippled faintly, and a tall, slender figure emerged. It was a young woman with sharply cropped hair, dressed in a black combat suit, gripping a tactical dagger reverse-handed, still dripping green sap.Her eyes were cold

"Grrgh, grrgh..."Garbled words forced their way out of the tree-thing's woody throat. Even as a monster now, it seemed to have held onto its memories and grudges from before. It remembered these two. These were the Hemaysians who'd refused to share their supplies yesterday, and hadn't warned them about the seven o'clock rule. They were the reason it had ended up like this. That hatred fueled its assault, driving it into a deeper frenzy. The tree-thing lunged forward, its other arm thrusting like a spear straight at Sam's chest. With nowhere left to dodge, Sam gritted his teeth and channeled every ounce of strength into his machete, swinging it down with everything he had."BREAK, DAMN IT!!"There was a ringing crash of metal on metal. The blade struck the tree-thing's arm, sending sparks flying. The bark was hard beyond anything organic should be. The blade only bit two inches deep before it stuck fast."How is that even possible? Is this fucking thing made of steel?!" Sam's

"Gavin?!"Jake called out, but there was no response from the comm, only a wash of static.Bella, Raina, Iris, and Vera all heard it too, their faces shifting at once."A demon?" Iris said on instinct. "It's still broad daylight. How could there be a demon out now?"According to Sheriff Leon, demons only appeared in the mist after seven at night. Had that rule been a lie all along? Or had Gavin and Sam broken some kind of taboo?"Whether this is about saving them, or finding out what these so-called 'demons' really are, I have to go now." Jake drew a sharp breath, his gaze sweeping across the four women, his words fast but calm."You're all too slow to keep up with me. This is urgent. Get into the pocket dimension, now."Inside the pocket dimension, anything that belonged to Jake, or any living being bound to him, could stay for a short while. He'd formed a Bond Contract with the four of them, which classified them as his "property" under the system's rules, though they could on

Iris's eyes lit up, and she nodded firmly, excitement bubbling up. "That actually makes a lot of sense!""But..."Raina shook her head gently, dousing the moment with a splash of cold water. "The real problem is how we'd actually leave at seven at night. Inhaling the mist gives you Bark Rot, and there are demons wandering around in there too."If we still had the motorhome, we wouldn't have to worry about any of that, not with its defenses maxed out. But right now, we're just flesh and blood." Raina sighed. "Our Specializations are still only Tier 1 or 2. Ordinary bodies, no protection. How would we survive that kind of contamination? We'd probably turn into trees before we even made it this far."She had a point. It felt like a closed loop. Getting out might require leaving at night. But leaving at night would kill them. The women's excitement deflated instantly at that, each letting out a sigh, before turning, out of habit, to their anchor: Jake.Jake drew a slow breath, not
