Chapter 1

"Ms. Granger, your purchase of our staged death service is successful. When the time comes, we will erase your identity and arrange a death that meets your expectations so that you can leave without worries," the staff member on the other end of the phone said politely.

I responded with a flat hum. "Set it for three days from now. I need time to pack my things."

After hanging up, I dragged my aching body back toward the hospital room. I had barely reached the door when I ran into my husband, James Lambert. The moment he saw me, concern flooded his face as he hurried over.

"Darling, you just fell into the water. You haven't recovered yet. How could you get out of bed on your own? Come on, lie back down."

He helped me onto the bed, carefully tucking the blanket around me.

Once I was settled in, he pulled a small box from inside his thick down jacket and gently placed it in my hand. It was still warm.

"Here. Your favorite pastries," he said softly. "I caught a flight to Ashville to buy them for you and rushed straight back. Eat them while they're warm."

Ashville?

That was several districts away from Stonegate, practically on the other side of the city.

Before I could process it, the patient in the neighboring bed let out an envious sigh.

"Your husband is incredible. He braved the snow and traveled over a thousand miles just to buy you pastries, and he even kept them warm inside his coat!"

Another patient added, "Ever since you were admitted, he's been taking care of everything himself. He helps you wash up, feeds you, and never leaves your side. He even brings you jewelry just to make you smile. I'm honestly so jealous."

Hearing that, I couldn't help but look at James.

With snow clinging to his hair and the cold tinting his nose red, he looked at me with pure tenderness. In that moment, he was nothing like the cold, untouchable James the world admired.

And yet, it was precisely those loving eyes that fooled everyone, including me.

Over the years, everyone knew how deeply James doted on me. Even when I merely twisted my ankle, he would worry endlessly.

I thought he loved me too, right up until everything was laid bare.

When I fell into the water, he swam to Cassandra White without a second thought and kissed her beneath the surface. Later, he even fought his own brother, Morgan Lambert, just to stay by her side.

By the time I heard the truth slip from his lips, I finally understood who he had loved all along.

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. The doctor had just finished examining me."There's nothing serious," he said. "Once this IV is done, you'll be cleared to go home."The moment I saw him, a sharp pain flared in my head as something came rushing back to me. I grabbed his sleeve in a panic. "Doctor, is there a patient here named James? How is he? How about his brother, Morgan? Is he okay?"The doctor looked at me with sympathy and gave my shoulder a gentle pat. "Morgan was already gone by the time he was brought in. Please accept our condolences. "As for James, one of his legs was already badly injured. After the explosion, the other leg was also destroyed. His injuries were too severe. There was nothing we could do. From now on, he'll have to rely on a wheelchair. If you have the time, try to be there for him and offer some support."With that, the doctor turned and walked away.I stood there in a daze, unable to say a single word. It turned ou

Their sudden appearance caught me completely off guard.I hated them for what they had done to me, but I still didn't want them to lose their lives because of me. I took a deep breath and shouted at them, "Why are you here? Leave now. Cassandra has a knife. This place is dangerous."To my shock, they didn't retreat. Instead, they walked a few steps toward me."El, we aren't afraid.""Exactly. We weren't ready to give up and wanted a chance to win you back, so we followed you. We never imagined we'd see you being taken.""Do you know what we did to catch up with you? James and I ran through several red lights. Thank God we arrived in time. I can't even imagine what would have happened if we hadn't."Cassandra could never have imagined that the two brothers who had always pampered and protected her would one day act as if she didn't exist. Even worse, they showed care and concern for her supposed replacement right in front of her. Jealousy consumed her completely. Her face contor

The firmness in my stance made James realize there was no hope for us. He fell to the ground, sobbing violently in the cold wind.I simply turned and walked off, ignoring him completely.I had barely taken a few steps when I heard footsteps behind me.When I quickened my pace, they did too. When I slowed, they slowed as well. No matter what I did, they stayed at the same distance. My heart jolted. I realized I was being followed.I seized the moment and darted into a narrow alley.Just as I was patting myself on the back for losing them, a sharp pain shot through the back of my head.Suddenly, everything went black, and I passed out. When I opened my eyes again, I was in an abandoned flour mill. My hands and feet were bound tightly to a chair, and I couldn't move a muscle. As confusion set in, a cold, eerie voice sounded above me. "Elsa, you are finally awake."I looked up, and a familiar figure came into view.I froze. "Cassandra?"The vibrant, glamorous Cassandra I once k

Morgan said, "I was blind before. Will you give me another chance now?"A wave of disgust hit me so suddenly that my lips twitched. Had I really been so foolish to fall for a man like him? Before I could even refuse, James panicked. He grabbed my other hand and started rattling off everything I had ever done for him, even pulling out the emerald pendant I had given him long ago."El, do you remember this?" he asked. "When I was sick with that fever, you climbed over a thousand steps up Mt. Peakview just to get this emerald pendant made to keep me safe. I'll admit I used you at first, but then I realized I'd truly fallen in love with you. "Are you really going to throw away five years of our marriage just like that?"A wave of nausea washed over me. I had really been stupid back then. Why did I insist on scavenging for men in a garbage heap? Even worse, I had allowed those two to manipulate me so easily. Both James and Morgan gazed at me with expectant eyes, shoving their gifts t

Before I could even react, he tugged at my pant leg. The moment he saw the scar on my calf, his eyes immediately welled up."El, how could you be so cruel? Do you even know how I've survived these past three years? Night after night, I thought about you. I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. More than once, I even thought about ending it all just to be with you," he said, his voice trembling."El, I'm sorry. I should never have used you. That was my fault, but my love for you has always been real. I've already punished Cassandra for you, blocked her, and deleted her. I promise I will never deal with her again. Please just forgive me this once and come back with me."He reached for my hand cautiously. The moment his fingers brushed mine, I snatched my hand away in disgust. "James, no matter who I am, we can't go back. We're done. We've been done for a long time."James's eyes reddened even more. "How can we be done? We're husband and wife!"I let out a bitter laugh. "Sorry, but we've

Cassandra's mouth was bloodied from the slap, and that finally lit her fuse. She snapped back without holding anything in."Is this really my fault? Wasn't it you who came crawling to me in the first place, begging to be my lapdog? When Elsa was still alive, you never cherished her. You played both sides. Now that she's dead, you suddenly regret it? Spare me the fake grief!"The video exploded the moment it was uploaded. The truth everyone had suspected was finally out in the open. James had cheated during his marriage.Public opinion flipped instantly. The netizens who had been pitying James just moments ago transformed into ruthless keyboard warriors, tearing both him and Cassandra apart."You lying, cheating jerk, stop acting like some hopeless romantic. Gross.""Two trash bags made for each other!""No wonder Elsa dumped you. You asked for it."Before people had even finished savoring that drama, Morgan jumped into the fray. Not long after, he shot straight to the top of th
