Lucas POV

“He wanted to confuse Katherine,” Oliver told me when I informed my friends about John Quinn’s call to my wife.

We were at my office: My friends and I.

Duke Philipps, Matt Davis, Jacob Smith, and Oliver Manns circled my conference table as we discussed what Katherine informed me.

I rumpled my hair in frustration at this latest event.

“First, it was Noreen and Greg the J*rk. Now, it was Agatha and John Quinn, a much worse j*rk than Greg.”

Oliver laughed.

“Serves you right. If you didn’t dilly-dally earlier about her. This complication with Agatha would not happen. You also could have prevented John Quinn from joining the fray.”

Duke shook his head.

“We don’t know that. John Quinn is insane.”

Then, his fingers shuffled through the documents he was holding. It was Kurt’s report from his interview with Katherine’s distant relatives.

“Lisa and Robert Dean were old, but they still remembered Arthur and Sylvia Fielding's call very vividly. Katherine had a stalker, and t

Veronica POVI saw the doubt creeping on Katherine’s face and felt trapped. Then, I looked at my half-brother venomously. “How dare you, John?” I cried, but the conviction died the moment the blank look on Katherine's face. The lack of expression made me eye her warily. John had successfully turned her against me. In one swift and unexpected move, John was able to railroad Katherine’s faith in me. “I know you were thinking the worst, but let me explain.” I frantically searched for words to make her change her mind, but I knew I had lost it when Katherine eyed me with disdain. “I never would have thought you would betray me like this, Veronica. You who made me believe that not all friends are traitors like Noreen. You, who continuously protect me from Noreen, would one day become the person who would hurt me the most.” And then, tears fell from her eyes.Katherine’s tears were something I did not expect. It only goes to show how much the thought of my betrayal hurt her. Right

Katherine POVLucas’s response eased the fears gnawing at my heart. The past five years have been tumultuous since I opened my eyes at the hospital ward to learn that my parents died in a car accident and I was left orphaned. The feeling of desolation and being alone drove me to accept my ex-husband’s proposal to marry me and raise my child, even if he was not the father. “I made wrong decisions in the past that I would never have made if I were wiser. Let’s move on from there.” I thought he would agree with me, but Lucas only shook his head. “Agatha and John Quinn must be stopped. If we don’t do it now, we will never do it in the future. Who knows who will fall prey to them next?” Now, the fear in my heart intensified. Tears formed in my eyes. I knew that in this war, Lucas might end up a casualty of the war he was going to wage. “What if you fail? You said he is powerful.” “I have my friends to back me up. Don’t worry about me.” “How can I?” Lucas hugged me. It was an act

Katherine POV“Since when?” He asked, looking serious. Since yesterday. I felt a prick on my neck outside the apartment building, and just now, I saw a shadow in my peripheral vision. Someone out there is watching me.” I winced because I sounded like a child snitching on someone, but I also could not help being alarmed. I don’t want to scare myself or him. But considering what I did a while ago with Agatha Richards, I am not deluding myself that she has learned her lesson. No. Agatha might just be biding her time and will strike when the time comes. I wanted to be prepared. Lucas squeezed my shoulder before he began stroking my back. The action seemed to ease my fear somewhat. Though not totally alleviate it. When he noticed that I was calmer, he went to his desk to get his phone and called Dan. Dan came in accompanied by a man I had not seen before. Lucas did not give me time to speculate when he introduced the man. “This is Rod. He and his team are shadowing us all the t

Katherine POV“Sweetheart.” I opened one eye to see Lucas hovering over me. “What time is it?” I asked before turning around to face him. I sighed when he leaned close, brushing my hair away from my face. In the days we had been together, I had become familiar with his touch. The way his fingers would glide on my skin felt natural for someone who had known my body intimately. Immediately, I lifted my arms, wanting to be carried, but Lucas did nothing. He remained seated on the edge of the bed, watching me. “It’s still early, sweetheart. You still have enough time to catch up on sleep.” He told me. My gaze flickered to the clock on the bedside table. It read five thirty in the morning. “I have a breakfast meeting with a client. Would you like me to come back here to fetch you and Erin?” I shook my head, still feeling asleep but lucid enough to respond. “We can manage,” I said and pulled him in for a hug. He bent his body to hug and kiss me.As usual, the moment our lips touc

Katherine POVThis is what I had been missing all my life: Laughter. I watched my daughter interact naturally with her father and smiled to myself. To think that in the past, I never thought this would happen. She climbed on her father’s back to ride piggyback. Lucas indulged her. They played inside the room. Their laughter rang in my ears. Gone was the Lucas I knew previously - the strict, touch-me-not kind of man who thinks he can always run the show because of his money. He was far more relaxed now. There were still worry lines etched on his face, but I can attribute it to running a conglomerate like SF.My gaze turned to our daughter. Seeing the happiness on my daughter’s face, and could not help but utter a small prayer of thanks for allowing Lucas to find and become reunited with us. A while later, Sara knocked on our door to inform us that dinner was ready. Erin clapped a hand to her mouth. “Oops! I was supposed to tell you that.” She admitted. “It’s okay, sweetie.

Katherine POVWhen we arrived at our apartment building, Lucas helped me out of the car.I was about to turn to the back passenger door to get Erin when he stopped me. “I can do it, sweetheart.” I have to smile at that. Ever since Lucas came into our lives, he has not allowed me to lift a finger to carry items when he is around. He not only provided for us but also made sure that Erin and I were well taken care of. While I waited by the side, I could not help feeling a prick on my nape. It was like someone was watching us. I turned around to survey the area around us to find out if someone was looking, but I realized it was just Lucas, me, Erin, and Sara in the parking lot. The feeling of being watched continued until we walked inside the building. When we reached our apartment, Lucas immediately tended to our daughter while I went straight to my room to shower and change. I was drying my hair when the door unexpectedly opened to Lucas. He came in, loosening his tie, pulled i

Lucas POV“It is an improvement, and any improvement means progress.” Dr. Kipling announced after we brought up what had happened earlier in Katherine’s office. She was all smiles, listening to our excitement. “If you are up to it, I suggest you revisit old places important to Katherine. Maybe, she can remember them.” I nodded at her suggestion and decided to call Dan to arrange a trip for Katherine, Erin, and me back to Kent. At first, I could not help having misgivings because Kent did not hold good memories for me. My mother still lives there, and I don’t want to chance upon her. These past years, I have minimized meetings with her if I can’t avoid it. Now, I have no choice because the doctor suggested it.I have to let go of my prejudices. This is all for Katherine’s recovery. “Is your mom still in Kent?” Katherine asked when we were in the car. It was the first time she inquired about my mom. “Yeah.” I nodded, positioning the car smoothly to make a left turn. “Do you hav

Katherine POVLorrie looked stunned. Disbelief was written on her face as her eyes kept going back and forth between Lucas and me. The discovery must have been a shock to her, especially when she knew how much I devoted my life to my ex, Greg Combs. Maybe she did not think I would replace Greg this early. It was just a few months since our divorce, and now she is learning that I married our boss. “I am her daughter’s biological father. Katherine and I had a falling out five years ago, and she married Greg. But that was all in the past.” Lucas butted in. He came to my rescue and explained for my benefit. At least, it was better than being branded a mistress to the boss.“Don’t worry. Everyone will know by Saturday about us.” He added while Lorrie nodded absent-mindedly. She was still probably shocked about what she found out. At least, I can trust Lorrie. She wouldn’t snitch on me. When Lorrie left, I swatted Lucas’s arm in reproach. “You shocked her,” I complained. “I had
