Chapter 1617

Author: Cozy Season
Randy caught it, quickly switching gears. "So, you two were gonna take on all these mercenaries alone?"

"Yep. Two against the world." Debra nodded.

She'd planned to bust out with Marion and join forces with their people outside.

In her script, the Illuminati would nab her for murder, wait for Drake to come rescue her, cut her loose if he didn't show up, or try to recruit her.

With the Four Great Families behind her, they'd want her alive, not dead. Even with Frederic's threats, Marion's presence kept her steady.

Randy and Erica noticed Debra and Marion holding hands, and the vibe got awkward.

"Uh, this place is a dump," Randy said. "I'll have my guys clean up. Let's get out of here."

Debra shook her head. "Not yet."

"Why? Their backup is coming up."

"Let's take Ryan and Troy with us."

"Who?" Erica and Randy asked in unison, clueless.

An hour later, they got back to the Lowe Mansion. Debra sat on the sofa.

"So, how does it feel? Quite the rollercoaster, huh?" she said, looki

"What'd you say?" Debra asked. They swapped looks. Ryan mumbled, "Said you beat us.""Y-You did kidnap us," he justified himself. "We just told the truth.""What's wrong with Orkgate?" Erica groaned. "That interrogation was rigged to lock you up.""Good thing we showed up," Randy fumed. "Or you'd be screwed.""I did hit some, but..." Debra eyed Ryan, "I didn't touch you, did I?""No, but you kidnapped me," he muttered."You can plot against me, but I can't fight back?" She stepped toward him.He flinched, yelping, "Help!""Shut it!" Erica kicked him in the chest, annoyed by his whining. "What now? Let them off?""What else?" Debra said. "Can't kill them."They were just dumb kids and not really Illuminati members."Wanna live?" she said. "It's not impossible. You said your club worships the Illuminati. Disband it and focus on your studies. I'll let this slide."Ryan looked stunned. "You'd really let us go?""Don't buy it," Troy said, glaring at Debra. She'd almost forgot

The two boys listened with apprehension."No, please don't," Ryan freaked out, turning to Troy. "Just tell them. The Illuminati isn't really connected to us. They won't save us when shit hits the fan. Don't be dumb about this."Debra knew guys this age always dreamed of being the savior. But when life-and-death stakes hit, the flesh reacted first.Troy gritted his teeth. "The Illuminati is a great church that'll push humanity forward. I'll never betray my faith."Erica's patience ran out. "Waste no more time with this kid. His mind is messed up."It was like watching a delusional teenager raise the flag of an enemy nation, shouting for world peace."Faith? Do you even know what that means?" Debra stepped up to him. "Do you know how they hurt innocent people and how much damage they have done to society? A great church that'll advance humanity? That's just a lie they feed naïve kids like you. They tell you to kill, and you just do it? That's stupid.""A great church wouldn't make

"If I don't spell it out, they'll keep thinking they're the world's saviors, doing some grand service," Debra said. "I'll give you ten minutes to process everything I just said. If you don't talk after that, your brain's beyond saving. I'll hand you over to this guy here. He won't waste time talking you down like I have. When your flesh gets peeled off, you can see if your savior shows up."The answer was plain to see. No one was coming. The world was full of suffering people, and saviors never noticed them.Troy choked up. "About half a year ago, my family went bankrupt. My dad got sick. All the relatives and friends who used to be tight with us ghosted us. I had no choice but to work at a nightclub to make ends meet.""So, you were overseas back then?""Yeah. We weren't some big shots, but we had a decent-sized business. Life was good. My dad put me in one of the top schools. Then one day, he told me we were broke."His face twisted with bitterness. At the height of his teenage

Randy's jab lit a fire under Troy.He shot up, shouting, "No way! This has nothing to do with Miss Sharp. The Illuminati didn't ruin my family."He couldn't handle the truth."You take over," Debra said, turning to Marion. She'd talked herself dry and didn't want to waste another word.Marion stepped in. "Over the years, tons of companies that wouldn't join the Illuminati got taken out. When your family was falling apart, not one friend or relative stepped up. Why? As far as I know, your family had a solid reputation because you helped a lot of people. Plus, right after bankruptcy, your dad died of illness. You didn't suspect a thing?"Troy's mind flashed back. When his dad died, Lara was there at the hospital. In a white dress, she looked as pure as an angel. She was the only one who'd helped him in his darkest hour. There was no way she'd kill his dad.He couldn't speak, his throat clogged up. If this was true, then he had been serving his energy the whole time, even killing

Marion didn't give Ryan a chance to bolt.Amid Troy's pleas and Ryan's protests, he tossed them out. His crew stuffed them into a car's trunk and hauled them off."Simple and brutal—classic Marion." Randy clicked his tongue. He figured this would be a day those kids never forgot. The last one to get this treatment was Liza."Alright, looks like the Illuminati isn't going to act against us. Let's not poke the bear," Randy said, opting for peace."Easy for you to say." Erica glared. "They're still after Drake. What, we just hand him over?""He's not a good guy anyway," he mumbled. "Let them have him.""What's that nonsense?" She smacked his head. "We're a team now. Who knows what the Illuminati is really up to? What if they're plotting something huge, like wiping out humanity? And don't forget, the one who screwed over our family might've been their leader."She turned to Debra and Marion. "I trust you guys and support your every choice. Just don't keep me in the dark next time."

"Yep, let's bounce," Erica agreed. She had never liked Lara, and knowing Lara was an Illuminati bigwig made her skin crawl. The four of them bolted from Orkgate that night, hightailing it back to Potter Mansion to tackle the dark web mess.Jordan set Randy up with a tricked-out computer room.Randy couldn't help but marvel, "Being rich has its benefits.""This website is for Illuminati members only," Debra said. "See if you can hack an account and snoop around without tipping them off."Randy rolled his eyes. "I thought it'd be some hardcore gig. This? Piece of cake.""That's not tough?""Nah, compared to the crap Marion made me do before, this is nothing."Erica whacked his head. "Quit yapping. How long will it take?""Half an hour, tops," Randy smirked. "Depends on their defenses, but I can crack any firewall."Erica, used to his cocky attitude, turned to Debra. "Give him half an hour. Why don't you two sneak off and get cozy? I'll holler when he's done."She winked, havi

Marion planted a kiss on Debra's forehead. These past months, he'd missed her like hell. Rumors about their marriage falling apart bugged him badly. He'd nearly trashed a few tabloids over it but held back.Right now, he just wanted to hold her hand, march out in public, and tell the world she was his forever love."It's only been two months," Debra teased, poking his cheek. "Why are you acting like a kid?"He caught her hand. "62 days, 1,512 hours, 90,720 minutes. Every second apart, I was thinking of you.""Me too," she said, smiling as she kissed the corner of his mouth.Countless nights, she'd reach for his pillow in her sleep, only to find it empty. These past two months made her realize he meant more to her than she'd ever thought. He was part of her life and the only family left in this world. He was her rock and her one and only love."I don't care how others define love," she said. "Love doesn't even cover how much you mean to me."Her words touched him, and his throa

"I didn't." Erica smacked his head. "Just focus on your business."Debra and Marion exchanged a glance. Then all four crowded around the screen."This site's got about ten thousand accounts," Randy said. "Not a huge number, but for a site like this, it's wild. If the Illuminati members are all rich folks, these users cover every big shot and nouveau riche out there. So, I hacked into one that doesn't log in much. Shouldn't raise any flags."They skimmed the site fast, hunting for clues."Look at this." Debra pointed.A powder listed on the homepage caught her attention, reminding her of the drug Drake had injected her with before. She frowned. "Drake shut down the production of this drug, didn't he? Why is it still floating around the black market?""No trademark on this stuff," Randy said. "Someone's probably cooking up a knockoff or the real deal and mass-producing it."He thought for a moment and added, "I remember when the Lowe Group developed this drug, they discovered it

Night settled in deep.Debra and the crew were still waiting for Michael's reply."Still nothing? They don't buy it, do they?" Erica paced, antsy."Give it time. They'll bite," Debra said, clutching her phone. She had promised Kale she would bring Drake back. No breaking that.A text finally pinged her phone. It was Michael.Everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Like Debra said, the Illuminati couldn't rule out her having the real stone. If theirs was fake, Michael and his crew couldn't afford the fallout."Marion, it's on you now," Debra said. The Houston family had military muscle on tap. The Potter family owned elite guards and intel. Erica and Randy were solid backups. But this meeting? Debra had to go herself."Does it have to be now? Maybe wait till you're healed?" Erica said.Debra shook her head. "Drake is at risk every day he's with them. I can't take that chance. Just like they can't risk us holding the stone.""She's right," Randy jumped in. "What're you looking at?" Lara asked, stepping out and spotting Michael by the window."Debra says the stone Drake gave us is fake," he replied."What? No way." Drake shot up from his seat."Are you messing with us?" Lara's sharp gaze landed on him."No. Debra's talking nonsense," Drake insisted."We'll see," Michael said, unruffled.Debra was offering the stone on the condition of meeting with their leader. It fit her style."She thinks she can just waltz in and see our master?" Lara sneered."The stone's a big deal to him. I bet he'll agree," Michael replied, shutting his phone."Don't tell me you're sweet on Debra," she hissed. "You keep letting her off. Don't wanna kill her, huh?""Unlike you, I don't get off on killing," he countered. "If she's not in my way, why bother? You're out there slaughtering, just making enemies for the Illuminati. You're venting rather than serving.""You don't get it. I'm building fear for the Illuminati," she justified herself. "They need to

Oscar set down the receiver and threw his hands up. "I'm not resisting. Don't spook my staff," he said.Chace tried to step in, but Oscar's look stopped him. This incident was major. Almost half of Flesta's people had fallen victim.Everyone at the company, Chace included, got hauled in for questioning. As the head, Oscar was the main target. The line went dead, and Debra's heart sank."Those bastards," Randy cursed, "hitting us on both sides. No wonder the Illuminati has been quiet. They have been gunning for our partners.""They're smart," Debra said. "Can't take us head-on, so they go after our allies. They want everyone to see partnering with us as a dead end. If we let this slide, we're doomed eventually.""What should we do?" Erica stomped, fuming. "We just sit here and watch them pick off our friends one by one?""They're showing us what happens if we cross them. They want us to bow. The only way out is to flip the script and strike first.""Strike first? What does th

Seeing Debra's worried look, Marion said, "You should just focus on healing and leave the rest to us. We might not match the Illuminati, but they won't mess with us randomly here in Seamar City."The Four Great Families had ruled Seamar City for a century. Although the former heads had faded, the new generation was sharper and stronger. They could hold off the Illuminati's push.Debra's phone rang. It was Oscar calling."You free? I've got something to tell you," he said.Debra put it on the speaker. No one could guess the aim of his call.In Flesta, the Odom family's business was booming again. He should have been busy with work."What's up?" she asked."There's big trouble in Flesta," he replied. "We didn't want to bug you, but it's spiraling out of control. We're out of moves.""What happened?" She had a bad feeling.Oscar paused. "A new drug has popped up in Flesta. Tons of our staff got hooked, just like regular folks. The police are on it now. Debra stared at the pendant. What had happened yesterday came flooding back.Kale was gone, and the fact hit her hard."It's my fault," she said in agony. "If he hadn't gone with me, he would have been alive.""Everyone makes their calls," Marion soothed her. "If there's blame, it's on the Illuminati. I was terrified, almost losing you.""I felt like you were nearby, so I wasn't afraid," she said, leaning into him. "They'll pay for hurting Drake and killing Kale. I'll make sure of it.""No matter what happens, we're in this together," he said.Exhaustion took over. She closed her eyes and drifted off. When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her injury kept her from moving much.Everyone gathered outside her bedroom. William came in to check on her."You're fine. Just change the dressings on time," he said, packing up his kit. "You guys can come in now."Debra adjusted her clothes and leaned against the headboard. "Sorry to trouble you.""We're in this together,"

William left quickly.Marion got up to lock the door and returned to the bedside.Sitting back into the chair, he switched on a dim lamp, making sure Debra would see him first thing if she woke up."Brother..." Debra mumbled.Marion leaned in. "I'm here."Her murmurs stopped, but her hands shot up, grasping at the air. "It's so dark. Save me."He grabbed her flailing hands right away. "Don't be scared. I'm right here."But she didn't calm down. She clutched his hand, her nails scratching at his skin. "Brother, save me," she murmured, feeling like she was trapped in a pitch-black hold.Cold seawater seemed to swallow her whole. The biting chill seeped into every crack of her body. The stench of the ocean made her gag.The water was up to her chin. She stood on tiptoes, desperate for a breath in that tiny space."Save me." Her eyes flew open.Familiar surroundings came into view. Her pupils darted until they landed on Marion. Her racing heart finally slowed."Marion?" Her v

Not long after, Marion came out with Debra.William nudged Erica and Randy. "Told you it would be soon.""How's she out here fresh after surgery?" Erica gawked.Debra was supposed to recover in the hospital, but seeing her unconscious form on the stretcher, Erica figured he had his reasons."Let's go back," Jordan chimed in. "The Potter Mansion's got a top-notch medical team. If we need gear, I'll grab it.""Yeah, hospitals suck anyway," Randy said. "Let's head back. It's freezing out here."They'd planned to grab food and head in, but Erica had made them wait so Marion could have more time with Debra. Now they were all sniffling."I'm... Achoo." William sneezed again, then bolted for the car. "I'm out of there. It's freaking cold."He had treated so many patients, but this was the first time he had fallen ill.Debra, still out cold, was loaded into the back. Marion stayed close, tending to her.By the time they reached the Potter Mansion, it was the middle of the night.Wil

William rubbed his eyes in disbelief. They had taken the emergency lane to the hospital, but Marion and the others arrived right behind their heels after going through a battle."We floored it. That's not the point," Erica replied.Marion and Jordan were already striding into the hospital.Randy grabbed Erica's arm. "Come on. Let's go.""Huh? William is still here." She was puzzled.Inside, the operating room's red light glowed.Marion arrived first. The hospital director greeted him, saying, "Mrs. Houston is in surgery now. Our top doctors have assessed her. The wound's been handled perfectly, and she is out of danger."Marion's face softened a bit. Erica heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. She's fine now."They'd been terrified seeing Debra collapse in a pool of blood."You're wiped out. Why don't you rest a bit?" Erica said, turning to Marion."I'll wait here," he replied, his eyes glued to the red light.Until it turned green, he couldn't rest his mind at ease."Well

Michael raised an eyebrow. "My plan never included you. Does our master know you snuck here from Orkgate? And you've got the nerve to question me?"Lara glared at him, her body aching from the burns. Her face twisted with anger."Take Miss Sharp back for treatment. It will take two hours to get back, so she'll have to tough it out," Michael ordered, unfazed. Before leaving with his crew, he lamented sanctimoniously, "Such a shame, ruining a pretty face like that."Lara clenched her fists, incandescent with rage....In the ambulance, Debra coughed up another mouthful of blood. It splattered right onto William's white coat."Aw." William almost griped about the mess, holding back only at the sight of her bad condition. He had to save her, no matter what. It was a promise he'd made to Andrew. He didn't even want to think about what would happen to him if Debra didn't make it today."Maybe another shot of painkiller? We've gotta get that bullet out fast," a medic suggested."Yo
