Chapter 1717

Author: Cozy Season
Enoch nodded, impressed. "Gael has raised a smart daughter. You're spot on. That's my plan for the good of everyone. You shouldn't stand in my way."

"We won't," Debra said.

"Debra." Jordan's voice cracked.

"I'm no bleeding heart," Debra said. "I just want my friend back. You wanna trash the planet? Fine by me."

She flipped open the box, revealing a rainbow-colored rock with a chunk missing.

She'd guessed the four families' gems came from one rock, so she'd had a craftsman nick it to sell the lie. It might not hold up, but it'd fool Enoch for a moment.

His eyes lit up. "Bring Miss Mathis out."

"Yes, father," Michael replied.

Lara jumped in. "Master, I saw him sneak Erica away. He's not trustworthy."

Randy jumped. "Where did you take her?"

"She's just resting in a back room," Michael said calmly. "Come see for yourself if you don't believe me."

"Alright, let's go," Lara sneered. "I wanna see how long you can keep this up."

Michael led them toward a door in the corner.

"By the way, when you get home today, put on a nice dress," Jordan said as he drove. "Ditch those jeans and white shirts.""Why? Is there a party or something?""Not really." He kept his eyes on the road. "Dwayne's son is back. You know, the one you used to hide from when we were kids.""What?" Debra frowned. She had zero memory of this guy Jordan was talking about. Growing up with the Potter family, she only met Erica later on. And she met Randy once at her coming-of-age ceremony."His name is..." Jordan racked his brain.Andrew had mentioned it a bunch, but it never stuck."Marion?""Yeah, Marion."Jordan snapped his fingers, then paused."Wait, how did you know that? Did Andrew tell you?""No."Debra didn't know why the name popped into her head. It just came to her, and her mouth blurted it out before she could stop it."Then how did you figure it out?""Maybe Erica's boyfriend mentioned it at my coming-of-age party?""Did he? I don't remember that.""But didn't he

"I..." Debra had no comeback. That wasn't what she meant. She vaguely remembered some nagging question in her head, but she couldn't pin it down."You burning up or something?" Jordan reached for her forehead. She shot up, dodging like he'd zapped her.The room fell dead silent. She braced for a scolding, but Jordan just whacked her on the head. "Dodged well, but not quick enough."Instead of digging into her reaction, he led her out of the classroom. The familiar campus hit her hard. Two voices and two sets of memories were in her head. One said this place was pure joy. The other screamed cold, cruel vibes. One memory painted Arcane Academy as warm and cozy. The other did wall-to-wall bullying. The split tore at her brain."Are you just letting the bracelet thing slide?" Jordan chattered on. "Andrew gave you that, and you've always treasured it."She suddenly looked up. "Where is Mr. Andrew Potter now?""Mr. Andrew Potter?" Jordan parroted, weirded out. "Did you guys figh

"Why is the door locked mid-break? What's going on?" Jordan asked. The class scattered.Shelia had met him once with Debra, knowing he was Andrew's brother. She crawled to him and pleaded, "Please, save me. They're trying to kill me.""Slow down. Who is trying to kill you?" Jordan asked."She swapped Debra's bracelet and now she's playing victim," a classmate yelled."I didn't," Shelia denied flat-out."You took Debra's bracelet?" Jordan's sudden question made her flinch. She stammered, "I-I didn't. They're framing me. I gave it back already.""Where's the bracelet?" he pressed."The bracelet... Uh..." She fumbled, realizing she had just swallowed it."No proof, huh? Call 911 and haul her off," Jordan said, sealing her fate.Shelia collapsed, her face turning ashen."Thought someone finally beat you," Jordan said, strolling to Debra's desk. "Turns out you're the one dishing it out."The class cleared out and called the police to tie up the loose end."Your thick skull fi

The pressure hit Shelia like a truck. She could barely breathe. It had been just one day, but Debra was now acting like a different person. Shelia found it hard to believe."Not handing it over? Swallow them then," Debra said, grabbing a handful of rhinestones from the ground and gripping her jaw.Shelia yelped, pain shooting through her face."No!" She smacked Debra's hand away. The rhinestones scattered. She broke free and bolted, but some other people blocked the door. A few picked up the stones and closed in slowly."What do you want? This is illegal," Shelia thrashed. "Stay back! Let me out!"She was desperate to escape, but there was no way out."This is illegal confinement. If I file a complaint to your principal, you're all screwed," she threatened.Arcane Academy's rules were ironclad. Anyone who broke them would be severely punished. These rich kids would hate the shame if they got busted. Her words made them pause, and she added, "Just let me go, and I won't snitc

Shelia seemed to want a cue from Debra. To repay her, Debra had promised to pull some strings and get her into Arcane Academy.Shelia stared at her, full of hope. Debra, however, simply popped the cake box open. "I don't do dairy. You guys split it."Shelia froze, and her face crumpled. "What's wrong? Did I mess up? Sorry. I should've asked what you like."Debra picked up the bracelet. The diamonds sparkled, but something felt off."Cake's a pass," she said. "Cheap cream's not my thing, but you should return my bracelet.""Cheap cream?" The heiress scowled, ready to trash the cake.A classmate piped up, skeptical. "You're not the daughter of the Miles family?""I never said I was," Shelia mumbled, biting her lip. "But Debra and I are tight. You said it, Debra. We're besties forever.""Is she really your friend?" a classmate asked, doubting. "You'd hang with someone like her?"Debra was the class star, with top grades and a bubbly vibe. She was Seamar City's golden girl and th

In the apartment, time crawled.Chace stared at Debra, who was sprawled motionless on the sofa. His mind rewound half an hour when he brought back some incense from the valley. It was a secret between them, kept even from Oscar. He wasn't sure if this was right, but back when Debra agreed to save the Odom family, she'd set terms. If she needed help, he'd jump in. No questions asked. In fact, when the cleanup job landed on him, he knew she'd planned it. She wanted the Illuminati's incense. When he had gotten it, he had warned her of its potential harm, but he knew he couldn't sway her.His only job now was to snap her out of it if things went south. The clock ticked. Cicadas screeched outside. Maple leaves glowed red.The campus buzzed with hyped-up college kids."Debra, someone's here for you." A voice faded in and out, yanking her back.A girl in a school uniform pointed at a woman by the gate.Debra blinked, realizing she had been zoning out.It felt like some hazy dream

Marion came out of the house and hopped into the car."Sir, where to next?" asked the secretary."The company," Marion replied, pulling out his phone and dialing a number he knew by heart. No one was answering, and he got even antsier. The secretary clocked his jittery vibe. "Sir, back to the office?""No. The McKinney Group."Marion's nerves screamed. He prayed it wasn't as bad as he feared. At the McKinney Group headquarters, the staff buzzed like bees. Hardly anyone noticed Marion barreling in.Ben spotted him and approached. "Mr. Houston? What brings you here? And isn't Mrs. Houston with you?"Marion stopped mid-stride, then spun around and bolted out.The secretary trailed him, watching him go from jogging to sprinting. He rarely lost his cool like that. The secretary trotted to catch up, asking where they were headed, but got no answer. At the Central Hospital, the corridor stretched empty. Only Barton and Jordan stood to one side.Experts filed out of the meeting ro

At the Houston Group headquarters, Marion slouched in the meeting room chair. The same tired lines droned around him.He cut in, weary. "Are you done?"The room went dead quiet. Everyone held their breath, stealing glances at him. "Guess that's a wrap," he said, standing up.He'd woken up on edge early in the morning. He didn't know why, but his heart had been racing. One guy jumped up. "Sir, there are other proposals." "If I've gotta micromanage everything, why the hell do I pay you?" Marion frowned. "Figure it out yourselves. I've got stuff to do."He walked out of the room, with his secretary trailing him. "Sir, the next stop is Osborne Group.""I'm heading back to Potter Mansion."The secretary blinked because a lot of issues were still waiting for Marion to address....Erica and Randy hunched over the living room sofa, buried in files.Beside their phones lay three laptops and two tablets. When Marion stormed in, they pounced like he was their lifeline."Thank Go

It had been given to her some time ago by Drake.Debra had nearly died trying to swipe it from him, but in the end, he had just handed it over."It's evidence of big-shot crimes," she said. "But I don't want it to be public. This is just a copy.""I don't quite get it." Pedro stared, puzzled."This flash drive has got dirt on too many heavy hitters. You don't wanna make enemies. Just use it to take down their shady businesses. We'll fry the big fish ourselves.""Sounds like a plan. I'm in.""Thank you."After all she'd been through, Debra got how the world worked. Not every bad guy got what was coming. Too much unfairness was out there. When the law couldn't touch certain people, they'd take it into their own hands. They would do it quietly without upsetting the public.Every circle had its unwritten rules. Business was no different.Starting today, she'd set those rules. Anyone stepping out of line and screwing society would be taken down.Pedro left, and Debra felt lighter
