Damien hated the idea of leaving April like this. Because she was speaking with him, and he didn’t like what he saw. He’d never trusted David Moore years ago. Now Damien had enough reason not to trust him. Or allow David near April or any woman.
But Luke Miles, his assistant, texted him with an urgent request. He didn’t do that unless it’s one. Damien found Luke, surprisingly, in a supply closet near the concierge. “Luke, what is it? What happened?” Damien asked. He demanded. Luke’s face looked concerned as the door closed behind him. In a cramped storage closet, two big men weren’t in the ideal setting for an energetic meeting. It’s a meeting that would take minutes and seconds rather than hours. The space smelled of cleaning fluids and was far too warm.
“I apologize about our meeting location. Next time, I will choose a better meeting place; preparation time was limited. Now I’m sorry but, someone’s tampered with the video cameras. We don’t have the evidence from them about who tampered with the concierge computer records. Whoever did the tampering didn’t know we backup our records every day. It’s clear whoever committed the act wasn’t familiar with their system customizations.” Luke said. He kept his professional tone as he pulled up on his tablet what little information his current investigation had produced. Damien reviewed it, before he returned the tablet back to Luke with a nod.
“Good. It pays to customize. I see there’s no injuries because the concierge was not at their desk. Did we lose many bookings?” Damien nodded. He was glad it hurt no one, no physical damage or theft either.
“Yes, he wasn’t at his desk and I’m unaware. A thorough review will check for missed bookings. If any are missing, it would be one or two bookings, nothing we can’t handle. The wedding’s helped in the long run. Their bulk bookings cover most of what the concierge would have booked and lost.” Luke said. He recorded their discussion, noting the necessary follow-up items.
“Excellent. We need our people to keep their eyes open to find this person. I don’t want anyone being injured if we can’t catch this person or find out who hired them.” Damien said. He hated being unable to walk in and take control of this. Luke had to manage it for him. If he wanted to inherit the resort, he had to be patient. Damien’s dad wanted him to run the resort, concealing his own waning of power.
This would happen until his father passed away. His father wouldn’t allow Damien to visit him or to call him. Because he didn’t want a media circus while he sought alternative medical treatments for terminal pancreatic cancer.
“I still say it’s the Carleton Entertainment Group. It would make sense since she’s here.” Luke said. He mentioned this as if it’s a reminder. His look confirmed that for Damien, and Damien rolled his eyes. He ran his fingers through his dark blond hair.
“Perhaps. Someone is using her. Someone from her family or a rival of both families. We must catch the people causing these incidents. After that they must lead us to their leader and relinquish us the evidence, we need to end this.” Damien said to Luke. Damien dictated these instructions while he struggled not to pace. There’s no space in the tiny area for them. The whole situation was hard, and it’s not helping his mood.
“Your father won’t rest well until you do.” Luke said. It reminded him of the crazy reasons he was standing there right now. He felt sure that wealth brought out the crazy and eccentricity in any family. Because middle-class families didn’t ask their children to lie about what they were doing to appear better.
“So, we’ll fix this as fast as we can. It’s not my fault he’s put these foolish limits on me. Don’t tell anyone I’ve stepped in for him. He’s not getting better Luke. He won’t get better, I’m afraid. When you speak to him don’t change his beliefs. I know there’s nothing anyone can say or do to convince him. My father won’t take my calls, and he won’t allow me to visit him.” He leaned back against a stack of boxes. It didn’t help because Damien was, he wasn’t in the mood to sit still.
“Damien, he doesn’t want you to see him as he is. You know how proud he is. He doesn’t want you to see him as anything less than his best. Your father is also worried some media type will follow you to take photos of him and expose him at his worst.” Luke didn’t exaggerate. They understood that the paparazzi and some investigative reporters could act as Luke described.
“Fine. Also, Luke, have someone investigate David Moore and his wife, April. I won’t be surprised if David is having an affair with Chloe Carleton. Don’t end the investigation there have them find out everything they can.” He sought details concerning April’s life, aiming to assist her escape from David. How many hands needed greasing to speed up their divorce? How far could David’s punishment go? Damien wanted David to receive more than just giving a slap on the wrist. April deserved to watch someone slap around and brought low David as he’d done to her.
“Yes, sir.”
“I must go back and ensure no one will miss me for dinner. If anything, new happens Luke, you know how to contact me. We’ll try for a better meeting location next time.”
“I’ll manage the clean up of the incident area and then work on your instructions. If your father has a message for you. I’ll leave a note tonight with a better idea of when I’ll have an idea of your father’s decisions and the results of my investigations.” Luke opened the supply closet door and stepped out into the corridor. He looked both ways as though he’d left the supply closet. “Okay, the corridor is clear.”
Damien nodded. “Later, then.” He took a deep breath when he left the overheated air of the supply closet. Damien walked back toward his suite and his thoughts shifted back to April. Chloe and David. He couldn’t believe either woman would be interested in David. What did he offer either woman? Or was it David who pursued the women, believing they had something he wanted?
Damien planned a shower and outfit change before seeking April and the group for dinner. He sensed Chloe and David wouldn’t accept the last word.
With the water warm, Damien opened the shower door when his phone emitted a distinctive ring that left him groaning. “Of course, I can’t have a horrible day without her putting her two cents in.” He leaned his forehead against the cool glass as his eyes closed and he sighed in resignation.
Damien left the bathroom and found his phone. “What do you want Ellen?” He asked when he answered it, annoyed with his plans being interrupted. Damien stood in a towel with a plan. A woman he wished no involvement from delayed him.
“Is that how you talk to your mother?” Ellen Jones said. Her voice demanded over the phone.
“Since, my mother died over ten years ago, Ellen. You are not my mother. Ellen, why are you calling?”
“I know you, Damien. You need a wife, and I know you don’t have a plus one. You can’t be doing that. It’s not appropriate. I promised a friend that you would meet his daughter. We’ll be there for the wedding dinner.”
“No, Ellen. No, this is an invitation only event. How can no one understand this?”
“Our family doesn’t count, after all, you know the bride and groom.”
“No, I’m not having this conversation with you.”
“That’s perfect we’ll be there soon.”
“Ellen, no.” Damien yelled into a dead phone line. Ellen had disconnected the call.
“Well, this will complicate things further.”
“What do you mean you must be seen in the photos with April, David? That makes no sense.” Chloe couldn’t believe him. He stood and left her there with everyone watched. He insisted he should sit with April, his ex-wife, at the Wedding Breakfast of her best friend. Because he changed the rules of their marriage so he would gain control of April’s company. Chloe didn’t like David anywhere near April or his interest in watching her. Damien and Neil stood to protest his presence. “Shut up, Chloe, I want her business. So, I’m involved, look it’s easier if I know the business and the owners.” David said in a soft whisper to Chloe inches from her ear before he’d left her. “Now, be an obedient girl. Go sit down, we’re on a timeline.” He didn’t want everyone blaming him for ruining the day. They’re at the wedding reception and David’s actions were no better. Chloe watched David as if he’d betrayed her. Her mouth hung open and her nose wrinkled. Befo
Chloe stayed out of Damien’s sight. She didn’t want to give April a way to prove to him she’d threatened or attacked her. She didn’t deserve to be here or, for that matter, exist. Why did she get everything given to her? Her family lost everything in one deal after another. No matter what they did. If they followed the law. Chloe didn’t know if they ever tried to follow the law. If they did, it wasn’t in her lifetime. She didn’t care about that. What she cared about was how they treated her. She’s a revenue stream, but she didn’t dare expect to share any benefit from the family, and her family wanted more from her. Now, they wanted her to get her claws on David’s money. Why David? There’re better men with superior portfolios available. She didn’t understand this. But she’d do this. Chloe hadn’t seen where they’d gone when the lights returned. The lights failed, and the chaos returned. She’d left David sitting in a chair complaining into a g
“I didn’t. David disliked this circus. He dragged me to Las Vegas. His family pressured me to sign his pre-nuptial agreement in a hotel room. He thought he’d protected his finances leaving anything I made during our marriage available to him. I uploaded photos of the agreement to my lawyer and my grandfather’s legal staff, who read them. They told me to sign it. David wrote the prenuptial that we kept everything divided. Before and during our marriage. If we split up, the only scenarios where we benefit from the other person are infidelity, children, or a fatal accident involving the partner. My grandfather threatened if I said anything to David before his death about my inheritance, he’d ensure the inheritance rules change. He saw David and his family for the greedy fools they are. I was an immature idiot. I wanted the vineyard and protected it.” April said this to Damien. Her grandfather wanted her to find an influential family, who could protect her, t
Hours later, they’d half of the elevators and emergency lights. Something that didn’t seem so bad within the suites or within the corridors. Elevators moved slower, and the lighting was dimmer. Landscape gardeners cleaned up the damage by the storm. “Well?” Damien asked Luke as soon as he stepped from the elevator. Luke hadn’t been able to ask how he was feeling. Or how April was. “How did this happen again?” “Someone set up a trigger, if this elevator activated and rose up toward your suite, it tripped a power surge which damaged something with the delivery system of electricity to the hotel. On a horrible note, the contract we have for the electrical maintenance can’t provide anyone for repairs until tomorrow.” “Will our repair contract cover this?” Damien said. He snapped at Luke, closed his eyes behind his right hand, and sighed. “Sorry, in time for the wedding, please.” “Right then.” Luke said in response
“They're aware of our presence; they'll reach us soon. Damien said to April. “Luke answered my call and is on top of everything.” “What do you mean on top of everything? What’s happening?” April wasn’t expecting this. She hadn’t expected a second outage so soon, but now Damien confirmed the situation was not an accident. “Someone tampered with the delivery of the electricity from the generators. I doubt their method; this isn't the only elevator affected. It’s the entire building again. Luke is on it again and we’re on the list.” Damien said to April. He frowned. “I question their method; buried cables precede the main structures. They will quickly identify the issue and restore the electricity promptly. He appeared unhappy. Now, this incident taught April understood to understand how powerlessness anyone could be. “I guess that’s the best we can expect. Your guests are more important right now. It would look bad if you took
April didn’t run from Chloe, not with the lights on. Chloe's actions were visible to onlookers. April found herself stuck with no time to create a scenario or narrative to embarrass her. She couldn't quickly discredit April without raising questions about her own motives and presence. Chloe couldn't create false situations to blame on herself. April entered the lobby from the corridor and wrapped her robe closer around her. The lighting appeared so bright now after the dark. The soft sounds of people, music, and machines now appeared louder than before. She sighed because it’s over and she could find everyone else and ensure they’re okay. Then she’d retreat to her suite and hide. At least, that’s what April thought she’d do. That’s not what happened. April stepped toward the front desk and Damien’s voice came from behind her. “April, where were you? I told you to stay in the lobby or the lounge.” His words told everyone he’s annoyed, and Ap
April watched David back away and leave. She sighed, letting her shoulders relax. Her arm hurt where he’d squeezed it. The ass thought she’d allow him to take her somewhere to hurt her. David signed the divorce settlement papers. He still believed he’d manipulate her life. A server appeared out of nowhere, startling and said to April when he refreshed her tea. “Enjoy Madam. If you need anything else, please signal me. I’ll bring it to you.” “Thank you.” Pastries next to a cup showed server presence. April studied the cup of tea as she thought. Damien had the staff watching her. Were they caring for her, guarding her, or protecting her? He wanted her in his life; she wasn’t sure if he understood all her facets. His feelings might change following that revelation. She ate and thought. David wanted his freedom, and then he acted like that. It won’t work; she would’ve to set a boundary. Damien would severely reprim
"I want what you owe me." David said as he loomed over April. His face was in shadow, which meant she failed to see his hate filled glared, but she didn't miss his grip on her arm. The familiar pressure and pain were there. "David, I owe you nothing. Now, release my arm. Anything I have now has come from outside of our marriage and your prenuptial agreement and postnuptial agreement don't include it. You've signed the settlement, and I've already submitted it to my lawyer who's filed it. It's a matter of days we'll receive the official divorce certificates, and this'll be over." April said, and she hadn't cowered or cried. She'd seemed too calm, and her satisfied smile rubbed David the wrong way right now. "No, I don't believe you. It won't happen so soon. It's too early. I'm not ready. It can't be over." David leaned in closer as he spoke. His emotions rose as he spoke and revealed something odd. "What's the matter David? I
April felt the heavy drops of the rain; she stood up from the table. It came with a suddenness no one expected. April held her arm ahead of her face. Damien surprised her by taking her other hand, pulling her from the table. “Damien, a bride will change everything.” It’s out of your hands and you won’t miss your control.” Neil said. Their joking exchange had April questioning their playful banter. Was their banter veiled matchmaking. April didn’t know Damien; a hasty remarriage wasn’t her intention. “Well, that’s an excellent save darling.” Carolyn pinched Neil’s cheek, and she gave Neil a fond smile. “Yeah, wasn’t it? I’m hoping Damien’s taking notes. He’s going to need it.” Neil kissed Carolyn’s cheek and released Damien’s shoulder with a smile. “I heard you I’m still married. Okay, I’m getting wet. Can we move along?” April said from Damien’s other side as she raised a hand in protest. She wanted to set her
