It took time, but they equalized.

It should’ve been embarrassing—two sweaty, shirtless adults ganging up on a child and an amateur—but everyone knew Matteo wasn’t just any kid.

That didn’t stop the boos.

“Shameless, both of you!” Milo shouted from the sidelines.

“A win’s a win,” Nico said, flexing his muscles.

“Boooo!” Milo yelled again.

Zayne flipped him the middle finger.

“Heavens, Zayne!” Gianna called out.

The compound buzzed like a packed stadium, everyone clearly having the time of their lives. Even so, Nico and Zayne kept their distance—no brushing skin, no lingering stares, no direct words exchanged.

Nico glanced toward the house’s entrance. Still no sign of Elena. His eyes flicked to the upstairs window. Was she still asleep? That wasn’t normal, not with this noise. Did she need a doctor?

He’d never felt this wound up. It was a miracle he could focus on the game at all.

He was about to slip away when a pair of black sedans rolled in, drawing every eye to the gate. The cars s

“She said she was my mum,” Matteo whispered.I froze, my hand pausing in Matteo’s hair. He lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, his small voice spilling confusion.I’d known this moment was coming, but I wasn’t ready. It was hours after the party had ended. An hour ago, Nico had reluctantly left my side when his father called him to the study, probably to discuss the fallout from Alexa’s scene. Left with restless hands and a racing mind, I’d decided to tuck the kids in. Sweet Mia was already curled up asleep in her purple pajamas beside her brother, but Matteo was wide awake, buzzing from a sugar rush.Thankfully, unlike I’d feared, Alexa’s outburst hadn’t shaken him too badly. What could I say? That, yes, that woman had given birth to him but walked away because she didn’t want him? That to her, he was just a tool to manipulate Nico? I couldn’t say that. But I also couldn’t lie to his face again. Before I could find the words, Matteo cackled. “She’s so silly. You’re my mum, not he

Cheers erupted. Applause, whoops, and laughter filled the hall. From the corner of my eye, I saw Derinem holding Maya, who wiped tears from her face, glowing with pride. My cheeks burned. Nico had said he loved me. He’d said… was I dreaming? If I pinched myself—“I need you,” Nico murmured, nuzzling my shoulder. “I want to sleep and wake up beside you, watch you model lingerie by the windows, tease you about being a Sardinian girl who can’t swim.”A laugh spilled out, tangled with a choked sob. “That’s not romantic…”He straightened just enough to meet my eyes, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “In summary, Elena, I can’t remember life without you, and…” His voice cracked, heavy bariton trembled. “I don’t want to find out now.”My breath caught, but not from pain this time. His eyes, once so guarded, held nothing back. There was no masks, just Nico, baring his soul in front of everyone who mattered and those who didn’t.“You’re serious,” I whispered.“Yeah.” He took my hands, pr

I couldn’t breathe. The air felt heavy, the hall too big, my knees weak. Right before me, my world burned. The way Alexa held Nico—like pressing against him was the most natural thing, like she’d never left, like she knew she’d always find a home with him—twisted my stomach. My heart pounded so hard it hurt, yet my feet were rooted to the floor. The hall was silent, save for harsh whispers from a bristling Maya, held back by Derinem. Even the music had stopped.Alexa looked perfect, as always, like she’d stepped out of a painting. Her white dress clung to her curves, her wide eyes glistening with tears that were probably fake.“I’m sorry,” she sobbed into Nico’s shoulder. “I understand now. I’m so sorry, Nico. I was too ashamed to come back. But I can’t live without you…”Too ashamed? I remembered how rested she’d looked in her mansion the week the children were kidnapped.Nico hadn’t moved. His hands hovered at his sides, not touching her—but he wasn’t pushing her away either. Why wa

The last three days, the manor was a whirlwind. Every corner buzzed with preparations—lights swapped for festive colors, decorations growing more vibrant by the hour. Everyone I saw was buried in work, complaining about being swamped.Maya had ordered me not to lift a finger, Nico had backed her up, and Clara never skipped our daily check-ups. I was feeling better, just bored out of my mind. One evening, Maya snuck into our room with a dinner tray. I pounced on it with squeals of gratitude I’d only ever used for my parents. Halfway through my plate, Maya, standing by the wall and studying some photos, murmured, “When are you going to tell him?”I didn’t need a fortune-teller to know who she meant. My fork clattered to the plate as I chewed, staring at my hands. “I don’t know.”“You should,” she said, crossing the room to sit beside me on the bed. “It’s getting harder to hide. You’re glowing, Elena. Nico’s going to figure it out soon.”She was right. I needed to tell him before he di

The party dragged on well past midnight, leaving me bone-tired, yet I couldn’t catch a wink on the flight back to Calabria.Excitement mingled with dread. I couldn’t wait to fall into Nico’s arms, to let him hold me through my complaints and mood swings that had wrecked my day. But dread gnawed at me for what lay ahead. After the night ended, if he caught a whiff of Alexa, would I hurt differently? No, I’d hurt worse—that much was clear. Even after being burned once, I hadn’t learned my lesson. At four the next morning, we pulled into the manor. I was the first out of the car, shutting out the wild chatter behind me. Like a zombie, I shuffled into the house, my bag clutched in my right hand, drawn to the sound of his voice in the kitchen.Nico stood over a chopping board, wearing a black apron, while his mother tended the stove. Why did I miss him so much it ached? Why did days away from him make life feel bleak? Why couldn’t I function without him?I wanted to cry despite their laug

The week flew by, and I wouldn’t have survived without my support system—especially Gia and Maya, who refused to let me out of their sight.Convincing Milo was easier than I’d expected. He was thrilled by the prospect, turning down my payment offer with a grin. “A year’s supply of beachwear won’t hurt anyone,” he snickered.“What a cheapskate,” Zayne sneered. “With the blows you take, you’d think you could afford underwear.”“Aw, look who’s still pissed I was chosen over him,” Milo shot back.“Shut up,” Zayne bristled. Even his wife admitting he’d been the first choice didn’t improve his mood—probably because Milo kept slipping in taunt after taunt.True to his word, Milo came through. Two days later, we were in La Belle, my stomach churning with excitement as months of work came to life in the most beautiful way. My team had ditched their tasks to cram into the studio like obsessed fangirls, swooning every time Milo flexed or grinned for the camera.“Oh my God, Elen, this is it!” Cha

"Is that it?" Gianni frowned when I finished. "You've got to be kidding me." Midway, I had almost burst into tears, explaining in as much detail as I could that the men's beachwear collection, which would have been next week, had to be postponed because of the lack of models."You don't get it." I sniffled, dabbing my cheek. "It's bad for business. Bad publicity goes a long way, and the investors...""Hey," Maya says, wrapping her arms around my shoulder, shooting Gianna, still sitting, a glare. "There has to be something we can do about it." "You've got to be kidding me!" Gianna retorts again, "That's why you're crying?" "I'm so sorry," I sobbed. "I don't know why I'm so emotional; what's wrong with me?!" "Oh, I know." Clara mumbles."Gianna!" Maya's tone is laced with a warning tinge. "Be nice." But she was right. This was nothing to cry about; I was a grown woman. It was shameful that once they thought I was the epitome of strength, but now they knew I was just a crybaby."Do

The next few days we spent indoors; still, it was hard to see Nico. The air in Calabria was hearty, the laughter infectious. It wasn't hard to notice that Nico and Zayne still stayed away from each other. They had tried to hide it, but they didn't try hard enough to take off our suspicions.Milo, sometimes in the middle of a conversation with the whole family, set up opportunities for them to exchange a word two, but like two peas of the same pod, we found them, mouth full and chewing slowly until the attention was taken off their back."You want me to do it for you?" I asked Nico when we were alone in the room, watching his face as I applied my lipstick, "I could talk to Zayne, Nico. It doesn't have to..." I wasn't done when his arms curled around me, flattening his opened palm against my stomach, sending my heart racing, and then he kissed me, shutting me up briefly. When he broke it off, sending me breathless and wanting, he searched my eyes and murmured, "It's all right. It's my
