Chapter 2

Author: Roaring River
It was just like three years ago when Elena set off fireworks across the entire city for me.

She looked at me with devotion and said softly, "Rowan, I want to marry you. I want you to be the happiest man on earth."

I had been moved to my core. We dated for three years, and I never expected that she had truly forgotten Miles.

She couldn't afford to offend me, so she played the part of the woman in love.

Perhaps now she was tired of pretending, which was why she feigned amnesia and said out loud that she loved Miles. She voiced her agreement to marry me only to secure the partnership.

Naturally, I wasn't going to let her get what she wanted.

I wanted to argue with Elena, but the look on her face told me how sure she was that I'd chosen her. So, I swallowed my words and decided to let her bask in it for two days.

I was genuinely curious to see how she would react when she heard Grandpa announce the engagement.

When I kept quiet, Sabrina nudged my shoulder and asked, "So, Rowan, did you choose Elena?"

"You'll find out in two days," I said evenly.

With that, I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Wren clicked her tongue. "Elena, it has to be you. Back when you were really sick, Rowan went everywhere looking for a cure. He heard that the old church on Mount Northbrough was miraculous, so he climbed the mountain and prayed all night for your recovery. He's head over heels for you."

"Is that so?" Elena let out a soft, coy laugh. "I didn't realize that he loved me that much."

My heart ached, but I kept my eyes dry. Everyone in our circle knew I loved Elena. People joked I was a doormat, but I didn't care.

I had lost my parents when I was young. Grandpa and Grandma spent years on archaeological digs and were always away. I was the kid anyone could push around. Only Elena stood up for me.

I'd liked her since I was a boy. When she confessed to me, I was over the moon and swore that I'd treat her better than anyone else ever could.

But every kindness she showed me came with strings attached. She didn't deserve my sincere love.

"Rowan, wait!"

I turned and saw Elena walk over in her high heels, her chin held high. "I know that you've chosen me. I'll marry you, but my heart belongs to Miles. I hope you'll leave us alone and not interfere."

I stared at her. "Didn't you lose your memory? What makes you so sure that I'd choose you?"

Elena frowned. "Everyone says you love me. Who else would you choose?"

I almost laughed. So, she knew how I felt. And this was how she wanted to treat my feelings.

"Don't worry," I said. "I won't chase you anymore. I'll stay out of your way."

Honestly, if Elena knew that I had chosen Piper, she'd probably be delighted.

My words stunned Elena for a second.

I turned and headed for the main doors.

Seeing this, Elena moved as if to grab my sleeve.

Just then, an electric scooter suddenly shot toward me out of nowhere.

The front wheel slammed into my shin. I hit the ground hard, my palms scraping across the floor as a wave of pain crashed over me.

Miles went pale, jumped off the scooter, and reached to haul me up. "Rowan, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit you. Please don't be mad."

I hadn't even answered when Grandma's furious voice rang in my head.

"That punk did it on purpose! He pulled the same stunt in the past life, too! He was always playing dumb or twisting things to frame Rowan, and Elena fell for it every time. Neither of them is any good!"

Seeing Miles all flustered, Elena instantly went soft. "It's fine, Miles. It's nothing. With me here, no one will blame you."

She steadied him, then shot me a look edged with warning. "He only bumped you. You're not going to make a federal case out of it, are you?"

Blood slicked my forearm. I gritted against the sting from the wound and pushed myself up to my feet.

Miles looked at me, his expression one of pure wounded innocence. "Rowan, I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention. I'll slap myself if it means you'll forgive me."

"Piper, you've been on your feet all day. Let me take it from here," I said.Piper wanted to refuse, but I gently pressed her back into the chair. She gave up with a sigh. "Fine. The driveway's a mess with cars. Be careful."I promised I would and headed outside.Traffic was thick at the curb. I stood near the lane, waving guests toward the entrance, when someone in the crowd shouted, "Watch out!"I turned and saw a sedan speeding straight toward me.A second later, I was knocked down, my shoulder hitting the pavement, and then everything went black. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital bed. Piper clutched my hand, her voice trembling. "Thank God! The doctor said you were lucky. You've got just a few scrapes. You'll be out soon. But please, be more careful. You scared me half to death!"She pulled me into a tight hug. I wrapped my arms around her, but something felt off. It seemed too quiet somehow. Then, it hit me—Grandma was gone.I let go of Piper, pulled o

Grandma muttered in my head, "Elena just won't quit."I looked at Elena like she'd lost it. "Why would I break off my engagement to marry you?"She faltered, then forced it out. "I admit that I lied. That was my fault. I know you only picked Piper to get back at me. You've always loved me. If you call it off now, I'll marry you right away."If this had been before, I would have been over the moon to hear her finally agree to marry me. But after all the times she threw me into danger for Miles, whatever I felt for her was long gone.I gave her a cold look. "Whether it was the amnesia act or begging me to let you be with Miles, everything you did was to push me away. And from what I've heard, your family's business has bounced back remarkably well over the past few days. You're not short on money or partners. So why force yourself to marry me?"Her eyes flickered. She couldn't explain why. All she knew was that losing me left her feeling hollow and uneasy.I let out a long sigh. "I

I stared at her and asked, "What truth? I meant it. I'm serious about marrying you."Piper let out a bitter laugh, a flicker of sadness in her eyes. "You don't have to feed me a line. You've always been in love with Elena, haven't you? I'm guessing that this engagement is just to provoke her. The moment she gives in, you'll drop me. Isn't that the plan?"Her words left me feeling guilty and a little angry that she'd think of me that way.Grandma chuckled in my head. "She's jealous."When I heard that, my anger melted away. I took Piper's hand and asked softly, "What if I told you that I'm serious?"She tried to pull away, but I wouldn't let her.She lifted her gaze, as if holding something back. "Rowan, are you done with Elena? Have you really decided to marry me?"I frowned and asked, "What else would I be saying? Or do you just not want to marry me?"Before I could finish speaking, she yanked me into a hug, holding on as if she were finally allowing herself to feel it. When s

Piper bolted away like a ferret.Grandma sighed. "If only she stayed that shy all the time, she'd be so much easier to love. Without that sharp tongue, she's actually quite likable."I nodded, then glanced up and locked eyes with Elena. She had clearly seen my exchange with Piper. Her face had gone pale, shock written all over it.Miles nudged her a few times, and she didn't even react.Grandma let out a mocking laugh. "Elena sulks whether Rowan chooses her or not. People only learn to cherish what they've lost."I didn't bother with Elena. I exchanged a few pleasantries with guests offering congratulations. Then, I grabbed my jacket and headed for some air.Suddenly, someone yanked my arm. I turned to see Elena, her eyes burning with resentment. "Why Piper? When did you start seeing her behind my back?"I shook her off. "Watch your mouth! My personal life isn't any of your business. If I'm not engaged to Piper, who exactly did you think it would be?"Her lips parted. "But we d

"My fiancee is Piper Alden," I announced. The room went dead quiet, as if the air itself had paused.Wren stared at me, stunned. "Rowan, did you misspeak? Isn't your fiancee supposed to be Elena? How could it be Piper instead?"Murmurs rolled through the crowd, most of them insisting that I had to have chosen Elena."I didn't misspeak," I said. "I chose my fiancee myself, and it's Piper!"I stepped off the stage and handed Piper the heirloom amulet that symbolized our family. Her expression flickered, and she didn't take it right away.My stomach tightened. "You don't want it?"Piper hesitated for a moment, then let a smile lift the corners of her mouth. "I do. It's an honor for me and for the Aldens."She slipped the amulet into her pocket and gave Grandpa a respectful bow. Only then did I let out a sigh of relief.Everyone present knew how to read a room. With the decision made, they forced themselves to smile and poured on the flattery."I've always said that Rowan and Pi

My mind went blank as I watched Elena shield Miles and run.Even if she felt nothing for me, I had loved her for years and treated her well. With life and death on the line, she still couldn't spare a hand for me?Suddenly, the weight on my chest was gone. Piper kicked the man off me, grabbed my wrist, and yanked me through the chaos."Move!" she shouted. The corridor was in chaos, but security rushed in and quickly subdued the patients with knives.I stood there dazed, still catching up to what had happened.Piper pressed a cup of warm water into my hand. Something unreadable flickered in her eyes.I didn't notice it, and I didn't ask why she was there. I just murmured a thank-you.Word of the attack reached Grandpa within the hour. He blew up and demanded that both the Reed and Ashcroft families answer for it.The Ashcrofts put Miles on lockdown and sent gifts as an apology. The Reeds were livid and forced Elena to come over and apologize in person. That night, Elena walked
