Chapter 2

“What do you know?! Your brother’s behavior in high school wasn’t enough to get him into a community college at all!

“The fact that he managed to do it during the actual entrance examination shows his remarkable improvement!

“That phone is my reward for his amazing improvement!”

She pointed at my nose and scolded me.

“How could you be so selfish? He’s your brother! Must you be so calculative with him over something so trivial?”

I looked at her quietly. Her face was all flushed from a guilty conscience.

I was suddenly at a loss for words.

Hugh was born a mere five minutes after me. Yet in this house, he was the king while I was a slave.

I pulled out a chair and quietly sat down to have my meal.

At my refusal to respond, my mom gritted her teeth in anger.

“How dare you give me that attitude and talk back to your elders! I’ll deduct another 50 marks from you! That leaves only 500 dollars for your phone. Take it or leave it!”

She pulled out five notes from her wallet and flung them hard on the diving table.

I swallowed a mouthful of food and reached out to grab the notes, which I stuffed into my pocket.

“Thanks, Mom.”

After the meal, I returned to my room. That was when my phone buzzed in my pocket.

My homeroom teacher had texted me.

[Sandra, your application was successfully resubmitted. Given your results, you wouldn’t have a problem getting into Northland School of Aerospace Engineering. Don’t worry. I believe in you.]

I exhaled long and hard when I saw her text.

Over the next two weeks, I pretended nothing had happened.

I cooked, cleaned and listened to my mom lecturing me every day as usual.

But I never stopped planning, not even for a moment.

Each time Hugh snuck out to a cyber cafe to play games, or when my mom went to school for meetings or to the grocer, I would search every single nook and cranny of the house as though I were a thief.

I wanted to find my identification document.

I also wanted to find the bank card with all the money I had saved up from teaching tuition. That was my only hard earned savings for my college fees.

Yet, even after five to six attempts of searching the house, I found nothing.

I broke out in a cold sweat out of panic, biting my lips till they bled.

The comments had been following me these few days, expressing their doubts over my behavior.

[What exactly is this girl trying to look for, searching the entire house?]

[Money, what else? How can she attend Northland without any money?]

[Her mom guards her like a thief. I’m sure she has it hidden well.]

Even as the day of the issuance of the letter of admission drew closer, I still couldn’t find anything despite searching through every nook and cranny in between drawers and cabinets.

This afternoon, my mom attended a grade-level meeting. Hugh went to a cyber cafe overnight once again.

I was alone at home.

Standing in the middle of the living room, I took a deep breath.

I tried to talk to the silence.

“Does anyone…have any idea where my mom hid my identification document and bank card?”

The quiet comments box remained unmoving.

At the next second, my vision was flooded with comments coming in.

[Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!]

[She can see us?! Is she actually talking to us?!]

[Damn it, I’m having goosebumps! Girl, can you really see us?!]

After recovering from the initial shock, the netizens in the comments box started sending tons of tips and suggestions.

[I know, I know! I stare at your mom all day long! Your identification card is in the wardrobe of her master bedroom. It’s in the pocket of the black down jacket right at the top. It’s all wrapped up in a plastic bag!]

[The bank card is in the master bedroom as well! In the gap behind that skincare box on her dressing table. I saw her stuffing it in there with my own eyes. Quick, go get it!]

My heart pounded in my chest. I rushed into my mom’s master bedroom with no time to lose, even forgetting about expressing my thanks to them.
