The room was empty, but Paxton’s entire conversation with his little brother lingered between those four walls: every single word, every single promise, every single cry of pain.
‘You must take care of her,’ Kieran had told him. ‘She is not the woman you think she is, Pax. I am not the man you think I am, brother.’
Paxton could still recall his moments before the nurses and doctors came to the room and took him quickly to surgery. The pain had changed his little brother’s expression while he was revealing what happened during Paxton's absence.
‘She is now my wife… I had to… do it. Paxton, she is pregnant. So, you must take care of her, and the baby.’
Rhiannon was now his wife? How? When?
And she was pregnant?
Paxton turned and looked at the empty space where Kieran’s bed was.
“I need to get out of here,” he whispered.
He went out on the hallway and then walked straight to the waiting area. Thank God, there was no one there. He wanted to be alone. He needed to calm down and think of what happened to Kieran during those past few weeks.
Standing in the waiting room, Paxton was looking outside the window, deep in the night.
Everything was so bizarre…
Like he was existing in another dimension.
‘I tried to save Rina… To take care of her… for you…’ Kieran had added and a groan of pain had left his throat.
‘For me…?’ Paxton had replied. ‘I don’t understand…’
‘You care about her, too, Paxton. More than I care… More than anyone else…’
‘Kieran… what the hell have you done…?’
Paxton loved his brother so damn much, but accept that woman, be with her… No!
‘Promise me… You must take care of Rina… She is a Ridgway now. If you’ll do this one thing for me, we will call it even.’
‘Kieran, no… Not this…’
‘She needs help, Pax… The restaurant… Austin’s precious place, his dream… He asked for my help too… Before his death… Rhiannon needs a lot of help to keep it alive… Be there for her. Like I was… Like I would have been if it wasn’t for this…’
‘Kieran…’
‘I don’t have much time left, Pax… I need your word…’
Tears of anger and hurt were starting to burn his eyes but Paxton quickly pushed them back.
“That damned woman!” Paxton groaned thinking of Kieran’s speech.
He cleared his throat and then with a glance, turned and gazed around to see if he was still alone. No one should see a Ridgway crying. No one must ever see Paxton Ridgway crying!
‘Say it, brother!’
Paxton remembered his brother’s voice. Shaky, filled with pain and suffering. Kieran was so worried not for himself but for that woman. The entire time, he kept talking about her and her needs. That awful, greedy woman… The woman he desperately tried to push away from Kieran’s life.
‘Promise me, Pax…’
He nodded. Right after that, Kieran went into cardiac arrest. The nurses and doctors were able to stabilize him and then wheeled him away to the surgery room. Paxton stood still in the hallway, with his back against the wall, like a lonely, helpless, scared little boy.
The world stopped existing around him. There were no sounds… People in the hallway stood still. Even the air stopped moving. All he could see was Kieran disappearing in an elevator, whose doors were closing behind him and the medical staff.
‘Promise you’ll take care of my wife… My wife…’
Those last words were still running around his head.
“Dammit, he went on and married Rhiannon King…” Paxton said in a low, angry voice. “Even after all I did to put a stop to this madness, to her presence in his life, Kieran still married that woman, making her a Ridgway now…”
He started pacing the waiting room. The promise he made to Kieran was starting to burn all his insides. He wanted nothing to do with her. He didn’t want to take care of Rhiannon. He didn’t want to be responsible for her life, her business… her baby.
A baby…
“Rhiannon was already pregnant when we… had sex in my penthouse… Fuck! She was already expecting my brother’s baby… And she still said yes to me… That whore… And Kieran… That poor fool did everything he could to protect her, to save a liar, a cheater.”
Paxton stilled in the middle of the waiting room. The wheels in his brain started to turn and so many unanswered questions were now getting their answers.
“That’s it! He did it for the ten million. He needed to get the money from his trust fund to help a friend… He told me that two months ago… Getting married at twenty-five was the key to unlocking the Ridgway vault. And having a baby meant more money… A baby was the icing on the cake… A natural heir, a Ridgway heir, was the perfect solution for both Rhiannon King and Kieran's situation…”
Suddenly, Paxton felt cold shivers running up and down his back.
“I must do something to stop her for good this time! She must be punished for cheating on my brother… For lying to me… For treating Kieran like her personal piggy bank.”
Since he couldn’t stand forever in that empty room, staring outside that damn window, or pacing the waxed floor tiles, Paxton decided it was time to go and start his game.
It was time to show the world what Ridgways were made of.
It was time to show Rhiannon King that she wasn’t all that safe and sound.
Yes, he promised to protect her, but she was not a member of the Ridgway family. She was a menace to his family’s image… The Ridgways, the family that took him in and took care of him, needed his protection from her greed. Their honor and good name needed his strength. They were more important than her.
Paxton left the waiting area and headed to the emergency room. Here, he found a nurse who took him to Rhiannon King. Two women, probably family by their looks, were hovering over her. She was lying on a narrow bed that had been curtained off from the other beds in a large room, filled with other patients and nurses, going back and forth.
“Hello,” he said holding out his hand. “I’m Paxton Ridgway, Kieran’s brother. I’m her… brother-in-law.”
EIGHT WEEKS EARLIER Strangely, the main door wasn’t closed, so Paxton entered the restaurant’s dining room. There wasn’t a single soul inside, and the lights were off, but he could see a ray of light coming from a backroom. Maybe it was the kitchen. He came closer to the door and the voice of a woman made him stop in his tracks.“‘Yes, Kieran, I understand you had other things to take care of, don’t worry. Still, I really hoped you could be here,’” she said and started laughing slowly. “‘Funny, but no! I didn’t bite her head off… The meeting with the interior designer went perfectly. Her ideas were great. She will start the work as soon as possible.’” The woman was talking on the phone with his brother. Paxton came even closer and kept listening from behind the ajar door.“‘This place is changing fast and it’s all because of you. Just promise me you’ll come here soon. I want to show you the last changes I made. Okay, Kieran, absolutely. I’ll see you soon.
A glance around the posh “Eleven Madison Park” dining room confirmed that she was tragically undressed. After a closer glance at the food as the maître d’ led them to their table, Rhiannon didn’t care. She couldn’t wait to get a look at the menu, maybe steal an idea or two. It was one of the most exclusive restaurants in New York, a place where the waiting list was as long as her arm… longer even. But dining in such a fancy place wasn’t the highlight of her evening. Not even close. The most important part was her being there with Paxton Ridgway, Kieran’s half-brother, the man she dreamed of since she first saw him. The room hummed with quiet murmurs and the clink of silver on china.“Nothing with honey for me, please,” Rhiannon requested after they had both ordered. Paxton cocked an eyebrow.“I’m allergic,” she supplied. He nodded, then ordered the wine paired with their orders. She took a quick look around, admiring the elegance of th
Exactly two hours and a wonderful, delicious dinner later, her eyes flew wide as she caught sight of the digits on the bill that had just been delivered across the table. Rhiannon barely managed to swallow the “Holy shit” that was on the tip of her tongue. She really couldn’t let him… Paxton frowned as she reached for her purse.“Are you kidding me?” He tucked his credit card into the check cover.“Don’t even think about it. I brought you here as my guest. Did you enjoy your dinner?”“You have to ask?” She was pretty sure she had moaned aloud more than once.“I just wanted to hear you say it.”“It was fabulous, Paxton. Thank you so much. I must say it’s much better than the slice of pizza I had in mind.”“I’m glad,” Paxton said and the sexiest smile appeared on his lips. Those lips… Those sweet, kissable lips… That irresistible mouth. In fact, she wanted to kiss it and touch it with her fingertips. Paxton
She came again, even harder this time, and a loud moan ripped from her throat. Every time his fingers hit that spot inside her, it took her a little higher.“That’s it, sweetheart. Give me everything.” His fingers were everywhere, sliding, circling, and thrusting. She took deep breaths, trying to force calm into her fevered body, trying to make everything last longer this time. Without much success. Rhiannon ground her clit against his fingers while they slid out of her, drawing a long, low groan of protest from her chest.“Paxton…” she moaned.“I want to spend this night inside your body… feel your warmth around me.” A second later, his heavy, hot body pressed her into the bed, and her thighs opened. Paxton took his weight on his arms and moved his hips so that the heavy length of his cock stroked the top of her sex. Rhiannon couldn’t think, could hardly breathe, couldn’t do anything but want him inside her.“Then what you’re waiting for, Paxton?”
Paxton awakened with a violent start in the middle of the night. His first thought was for the safety of the gorgeous woman curled trustingly against him. She was warm and soft, beguilingly beautiful in the moonlight with her long, dark hair spilling across his pillow. He wanted to touch that hair and kiss her lips again, wanted it so much he had to clench his hands. Ironically, he’d enjoyed his evening with Rhiannon more than he’d enjoyed being with anyone in a very long time. Maybe that was why his gut twisted as he experienced an unusual pang of conscience. After all, he’d seduced her for very deliberate, self-serving reasons. Careful not to disturb her, Paxton sat up and ran a hand through his dark hair. Everything he’d done tonight, the seductive dinner, the kissing, having wild sex in his penthouse, all the shared laughter and smiles, had been a lie. He’d set her up so he could protect his naive younger brother. But at some point
Her eyes were so brilliant with innocence and outrage he almost believed her. He’d wanted to believe Rhiannon. Then he remembered Leilah and how gullible he’d been. Capable as he might be in the business world, apparently, Paxton was an easy mark when it came to women he wanted in his bed.“You deserve an Oscar for this performance! But if you think I’m as big a fool as my little brother, you’re dead wrong.”“Paxton…”“Shut your mouth, pick up your shit from my floor, and get the fuck out of my sight and my apartment. If you stay away from Kieran, I won’t tell him I slept with you. If you don’t leave him alone, I’ll tell him about us. I’ll tell the world about tonight.” Rhiannon wrapped the covers around her naked body and got up from the bed.“Go ahead, I don’t care! Tell him everything. Better yet, I’ll tell him myself. He needs to know you’re a control freak, treating him like a puppet. Maybe he’ll resent you even more than he already does.” Her reacti
PRESENT DAYS (EIGHT WEEKS LATER) This time, the trip from Tokyo to New York City has been way too long. Or maybe it seemed so, since the only thing he had in mind was seeing Rhiannon, talking to her. Two months without a single word from her had been way more difficult than he’d imagined.“Face to face… Finally…” he mumbled. “This time I will get to you. This time you will listen and do exactly what I say.” Paxton had been trying to call Rhiannon from his limo on the drive through thick rain from “Teterboro Airport” into New York City. When all he could get was her voicemail, Paxton had decided to stop by “King’s Wish” on the way to his office to confront her again. He’d just pulled up at the curb outside the restaurant when Roberto, his private assistant, had called him.“Roberto, you know you must call only if it’s a life and death matter…”“‘It is… Sir, you must come immediately to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.’”“Why? What’s wrong?”“‘It’s about
While pacing the waiting room, Paxton kept thinking of his conversation with Kieran. Well, he kept thinking of all the conversations they’ve had during the last few days. Kieran kept asking him about the trust fund, about the conditions to get those millions, about his allowance. “Oh God… That’s it! He did it for the ten million. He needed to get the money from his trust fund to help a friend… He told me that two months ago…” Had Kieran informed Rhiannon about all that money? Had he told her about what having a baby meant?“Of course he did. Getting married at twenty-five was the key to unlocking the Ridgway vault. And having a baby meant more money… A baby was the icing on the cake… A natural heir, a Ridgway heir, was the perfect answer for both Rhiannon King and Kieran…” Suddenly, Paxton felt cold shivers running up and down his back.“I must do something to stop her for good this time! She must be punished for cheating on my brother… For lying to me…
