Aria barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw crimson eyes and heard that deep, quiet voice saying the same two words over and over.

You don’t have a choice.

By morning her small apartment felt like a cage. She had packed a bag twice and unpacked it twice. Running was the smart choice. She had done it before. She could dye her hair again, change cities, disappear into another diner in another state.

But her wolf refused to let her leave.

The animal that had been silent for three years was now restless and loud, pacing inside her chest, growling every time Aria even thought about packing. The mate bond—raw and unwanted—pulled at her like invisible chains.

At exactly 7:55 a.m., a black car stopped in front of her building.

Aria stood at the window and watched a tall man in a dark suit step out and open the back door. He didn’t look up at her window. He simply waited.

She could still run.

Instead, she grabbed her jacket and walked downstairs.

The driver opened the door without a word. Aria slid into the back seat. The leather was cold against her legs. The door closed with a soft, expensive click, and the car pulled away from the curb.

She didn’t ask where they were going. She already knew.

The Blackthorn Empire tower rose in the center of the city like a black blade. Glass and steel stretched so high it seemed to cut the clouds. The car drove straight into an underground garage that required three different security checks. No one spoke to her. No one looked at her for longer than a second.

When the elevator doors opened on the top floor, Aria’s stomach tightened.

The entire floor was silent. Dark marble floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows that showed the city far below. The air itself felt expensive and dangerous.

A woman in a sharp black dress waited for her. “Miss Vale. This way.”

Aria froze for half a second. They already knew her real name.

Of course they did.

She followed the woman down a long hallway and into a large office. The door closed behind her with a quiet, final sound.

Kael Blackthorn stood with his back to her, looking out over the city. He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing strong forearms marked with faint scars. Even from behind, power rolled off him in waves.

“Sit,” he said without turning around.

Aria stayed standing. “I didn’t agree to come here so you could order me around.”

Kael turned slowly. In the daylight his eyes were darker, almost black, but the crimson still burned faintly at the edges. He studied her for a long moment, the same way a predator studied something it had already decided to keep.

“You came,” he said simply. “That is agreement enough.”

He walked to the large desk and picked up a thick folder. “One year. You will live in my estate. You will attend every pack and public event as my Luna. You will not leave the city without my permission. In return, when the year ends, I will give you five million dollars and a new identity strong enough that no one will ever find you again.”

Aria’s mouth went dry. “Why me?”

“Because my wolf has chosen you.” His voice was calm, almost bored. “I have spent twenty-eight years without a mate. I preferred it that way. Then I walked into a diner last night and the decision was taken out of my hands.”

“I was rejected once already,” she said, the words sharp. “I won’t survive another one.”

Kael’s expression didn’t change, but something dangerous flickered behind his eyes. “I am not him. I do not reject what is mine.”

The word mine settled over her like a weight.

Aria crossed her arms, trying to hide the way her hands trembled. “And if I say no?”

Kael set the folder down and walked around the desk until he stood directly in front of her. He was so close she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. His scent wrapped around her again—pine and winter and raw power—and her wolf pushed hard against her control, desperate to get closer.

“You won’t,” he said quietly. “Because you felt the same thing I did. Because your wolf has been starving for three years. And because if you walk out of this building without signing, I will follow you. I will find every place you hide. I will make sure the entire werewolf world knows exactly who you are and what blood runs in your veins.”

Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. “You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough.” His gaze dropped briefly to her neck, then back to her eyes. “Silver-wolf blood. Rare. Powerful. Every Alpha in the country would start a war for it. You have been hiding for three years. I can end that protection with one phone call… or I can give you a new one.”

Silence stretched between them.

Aria hated how true his words were. She had survived by being invisible. The moment Kael Blackthorn decided she was his, invisibility was no longer an option.

She looked at the contract on the desk.

One year.

Five million dollars.

Freedom at the end.

Or a life spent running from every Alpha who wanted her blood.

Her voice came out smaller than she wanted. “I want it in writing that you will never force the mate bond beyond the public claim. No marking. No… anything else.”

Kael’s mouth curved slightly, but it wasn’t a smile. “I will not take what you do not give. But do not pretend your wolf will make that easy for either of us.”

He held out a pen.

Aria stared at it for a long time.

Then she took it.

Her signature looked small and shaky on the last page.

The moment the ink dried, Kael closed the folder and set it aside. “Good. My driver will take you to the estate. Your belongings will be collected. From this moment on, you are under my protection… and my claim.”

He stepped even closer. One large hand rose and settled lightly against the side of her neck, thumb resting just over her pulse. The touch was barely there, but it burned.

Aria’s breath caught.

Kael leaned down until his mouth was close to her ear. His voice dropped to a dark, quiet promise.

“Welcome to my world, little wolf. Try not to break.”

He released her and walked back to the window, dismissing her without another word.

Aria stood frozen for several seconds, the ghost of his hand still burning against her skin. Then she turned and walked out of the office on unsteady legs.

The contract was signed.

The cage had closed.

And somewhere deep inside her chest, her wolf was no longer afraid.

It was waiting.

The estate transformed under the weight of the coming full moon.By mid-morning the reception grounds had been cleared and expanded. Additional lighting was strung between the trees. Guest wings were opened and aired. Pack members who lived farther out began arriving in steady streams—some curious, some wary, all of them careful to keep their eyes respectfully lowered when Aria passed on Kael’s arm.She wore Blackthorn colors again: deep charcoal and crimson. The temporary mark on her neck remained uncovered by design. Every wolf who saw it understood the message. The silver ring in her eyes had not faded overnight. If anything, it had grown clearer.Kael did not leave her side for more than a few minutes at a time. They moved through the day as a single unit—inspecting security rotations, greeting early arrivals, reviewing the order of the full-moon ceremony. Every time another Alpha or senior wolf let their gaze linger too long on Aria, Kael’s hand settled more firmly at her waist o

The ruined suite door was replaced before dawn.Aria sat on the edge of the bed while the pack doctor checked the new cut on her arm and the older silver wound that had already healed to a faint line. Kael stood three feet away the entire time, arms crossed, eyes never leaving her. The guards had been rotated. The estate perimeter had been walked twice by Torin himself. Still Kael refused to move farther from her than the bond comfortably allowed. When the doctor left, silence settled like a held breath.“You fought well,” Kael said finally. His voice was low, scraped raw from lack of sleep and leftover rage. “But you also bled again. That is becoming a pattern I dislike.”Aria met his gaze. “I’m not going to sit behind guards while people break down doors looking for me.”“I know.” He dragged a hand through his hair, the first open sign of frustration he had allowed her to see in days. “That is the problem. The silver is waking faster than we planned. Your instincts are sharpening wi

Kael left at dusk.Aria stood at the suite windows and watched the convoy of black vehicles disappear down the long driveway until the trees swallowed the last pair of taillights. The temporary mark on her neck flared the moment the bond registered real distance. It was not the sharp pain of the first escape attempt, but a deep, insistent ache that settled behind her ribs and refused to ease.Four guards remained inside the Alpha suite. Six more held the corridor and the floors above and below. The estate itself felt like a held breath.Aria tried to train her new senses the way Torin had instructed—narrowing the flood of information, focusing on one sound at a time, one scent. It helped, but only slightly. Every shift of a guard’s weight, every distant door closing, every whisper of wind against the glass registered with painful clarity. Underneath it all ran the steady, stretched pull of the bond pointing east, toward wherever Kael had gone.Mrs. Lang brought dinner she did not eat.

Morning light found them already awake and on opposite sides of a widening crack.Aria had slept in Kael’s bed as ordered. They had not touched beyond the necessary pull of the bond, yet the memory of the kiss lived in every shared breath. When she woke, Kael was standing at the windows again, fully dressed, phone in hand, the line of his shoulders rigid with control he refused to relinquish.“Three border packs have requested formal audience before the full moon,” he said without turning. “They want to ‘pay respects’ to the new Luna. Two of them are allies. One is not. Reid’s visit is already moving through the territories.”Aria sat up, the temporary mark warm against her skin. “They’re coming here?”“They are coming to the outer reception grounds. You will be at my side for each meeting. After yesterday, any sign of distance between us will be read as weakness.” He finally looked at her. The crimson was gone, but the intensity remained. “Wear the colors of the pack. Mrs. Lang has a

The estate went into full lockdown within the hour.Extra patrols flooded the grounds. The outer sensor net was tripled. Two of Kael’s most trusted enforcers were assigned to Aria’s shadow at all times—close enough that she could hear their heartbeats with her newly sharpened senses. No one entered or left Blackthorn land without Kael’s direct approval.Aria sat on the edge of the large bed in the Alpha suite while a pack doctor examined the temporary mark and the faint silver glow that still lingered in her eyes. The doctor’s hands were steady, but her scent carried unease.“The awakening is progressing faster than any record I have,” the woman said carefully. “The mark acted as a catalyst. Full sensory and healing traits are already active. Deeper abilities may surface before the full moon.”Kael stood near the windows with his back to them, phone pressed to his ear, issuing a string of low, lethal orders. When he ended the call, the silence in the room felt charged.“Everyone out,”

Training grounds behind the estate had been cleared before sunrise.Torin waited in the center of the packed earth circle, arms crossed, expression unreadable. Two other enforcers stood at the perimeter. Kael remained at the edge, silent and watchful, the temporary mark on Aria’s neck still linking them so tightly she could feel the controlled tension running through him.“Show me what changed,” Torin said.Aria stepped into the circle. The world still felt too sharp—every heartbeat of the men around her, every shift of wind through the trees, every faint trace of last night’s rain on the soil. She tried to quiet the flood of information the way Kael had instructed during the short walk out here. It was like trying to soften a storm with her bare hands.Torin moved first. He was fast. Faster than he had been in their earlier sessions. Aria’s body reacted before her mind fully caught up. She sidestepped the incoming strike, the new strength in her legs carrying her farther than she exp
