Mason's POV

I was reading Reeves's overnight report when the news alert hit my screen.

Not a notification I could dismiss, a full broadcast interrupt on the financial channel I kept running on the office wall display, which my communications director had set to flag anything containing Mason Empire's name or any of our key competitors.

Hargrove Meridian had triggered it.

And then Maya Hargrove walked to a podium and I stopped reading entirely.<

Ugh! in last chapter Mason was in the delivery with Selena telling her she was doing good. Is this a different book. Even now it went from Selena was 2 months pregnant to giving birth at full term. When Maya was to only have to wait 22 days for her 49% of owner if company to kick in. Really!

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 241

Alex's POVI was at my desk by six-thirty....The office was empty at this hour.I had access codes for the financial archive that Maya's team had been maintaining across the months of my absence... the standing arrangement between Voss Maritime and Hargrove Meridian that had been formalised before the wedding and that had continued operating through everything that followed.I opened the archive.Started readingThe reports covered six months. Not the operational reports... the transaction records..Most of the transactions were ordinary. The ordinary business of a maritime company running its operations and fulfilling its obligations and managing its accounts was significant in volume and in regularity.... the kind of financial activity that produced a pattern, that communicated its own nature through its consistency. The ones that didn't fit the pattern were not obvious at first.Three payments. Not small.Eight figures. Each one authorised with documentation that

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 240

Maya's POVAlex had been back at Voss Maritime for two weeks. He was home by six...Which meant the evenings were ours. The house had found a rhythm again.... I made dinner.Alex worked on the reports he had brought home.... I had been reading my father's notebook again. Not for the first time. I had read it so many times that certain passages arrived in my memory before I reached them on the page... the rushed handwriting, the shift in register when he understood he was being watched, the final entry that was different from everything else. What I had not done was look at the numbersThey had been there. I had registered them. But tonight.... Tonight they looked different. Not random.Columns.Not lists.I turned the notebook sideways.Looked at the numbers from a different angle.Still organised.Still deliberateStill the product of a mind that understood what it was recording and had arranged the recording accordingly.I brought the notebook to the sitt

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 239

Mason's POV My phone vibrated before I had finished the second page. Her number... I set the file down and answered. "It's going better than expected," she said. "Tell me," I said. "She tells me things," she said. "Little things.... what she's eating, how the pregnancy is going, what the twins are doing that week according to the last scan. She doesn't share anything sensitive yet. But the little things are the beginning." A pause. "She's stopped checking the card." "What do you mean?" I said. "When we first started spending time together, I could tell she was cautious. There was a quality to some of her questions.... the way she'd ask about my background, my clients, my niece." The line shifted, quieter. "She's stopped asking that way. She just asks because she wants to know." "Good," I said. "Keep earning her trust," I said. "Never rush her. The best lies are hidden inside genuine kindness." A pause "I know," she said. She ended the call. The second

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 238

Unknown POV The building did not announce itself. That was by design. The conference room on the forty-third floor was different from the rooms below it only in its view. Eight chairs around the table.... Seven of them occupied. The eighth at the head, empty. The men who sat in the first seven chairs did not occupy conference rooms very often. They sat. They did not speak. They waited The door opened at the head. The oldest man in the room. Mid-seventies.... He moved to the head of the table. Sat. Looked at the room. Waited for the room to begin. "The investigator is dead," one man said. A statement, not a report. The distinction communicated that everyone in the room already had this information and that naming it was procedural rather than informational. "But the daughter hasn't stopped," another said. A pause "The materials he assembled are with the detective." "And with her...." "The lighthouse materials are confirmed received and logg

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 237

Maya's POV We arrived at ten. The funeral service had been arranged by Carter's family... small, as he would have wanted... Forty people, perhaps. His wife. Two adult children... Fellow investigators. Officers. A handful of people whose relationship to Carter I didn't know and who had come because they had known him in contexts that existed outside the work I had known him through. And us. Alex's hand in mine throughout the service. The coffin was polished wood. I looked at it Thought about Keswick Street, where a man had stepped out of a black car and had told Carter he should have left the past buried. Thought about the envelope Carter had protected in the ambulance, which had arrived in my hands through the chain of custody he had established before he lost consciousness, which had contained everything... the names, the records, the photographs, the access log. Everything. And Carter, who had assembled it and had been on his way to deliver it. The weight

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 236

Carter's POV Pain first. The chest primarily. I lay still Let the ceiling become real. Let the sounds become identifiable. The machines.... The rhythmic monitoring of a body that was being watched more carefully than bodies usually were. I was in a hospital I had been on a street. I had said no to a man who told me I should have left the past buried. He had taken a step toward me And then.... The ceiling. Maya The thought arrived before anything else had finished assembling.... before I had confirmed the extent of the damage, before I had assessed the room, before I had determined how long I had been here or what had happened after the street. Maya. The envelope had been in my hand I had been on my way to deliver it. I had been on a street called Keswick. A man had stepped toward me. The envelope I did not know where the envelope was. The nurse appeared at the edge of my vision.... Young, and professional... "You're awake," she said. "Yes,

Maya’s POV“She is two months pregnant.”“I can’t believe it,” Mason’s voice carried through the cracked boardroom door, low and reverent, the way he used to speak to me only in our earliest days before the miscarriages, before the silence grew between us like frost on glass. “Two months?”My fing

Maya’s POVThe air in Mason’s office thickened the second I turned back toward the door. Selina moved first quick, theatrical reaching out as if to grab my arm in some mockery of concern.“Maya, wait……”Her fingers brushed my sleeve.I reacted on instinct. A small, sharp push just enough to create

Maya's POV I lifted my chin, Selina is there beside Mason, in a romantic posture. “How do you sleep at night, Selina, with all that evil sitting on your chest like a stone?”She laughed soft, delighted. “Easily. Because I finally stopped pretending to be the good girl who waits for her turn”I lo

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 4

Maya’s POVThe coordination suite felt smaller with just the two of us in it. The harbor glittered beyond the glass like it was mocking us both, endless, indifferent, moving on without caring who drowned.Selina didn’t bother with the soft, apologetic mask anymore. The moment Lila’s footsteps faded
