Chapter 4

Author: Fishing Pole
I couldn't stop myself from smiling when I remembered how Rupert would always pretend not to care every time he got jealous when he actually minded it a lot.

Eugene stared at the smile on my lips for a while. Then, he sighed and said, "I've always been waiting for you. I only had a baby with Janice because she wanted a child to keep her company. That way, she wouldn't have to be lonely and interfere in our lives. I'll remarry you after she gives birth, okay?"

He said it so matter-of-factly as if he knew for sure that I would never reject his offer.

I found it extremely amusing to watch.

Five years ago, he had received word from the government that he'd been selected as one of the few students who were given a full scholarship to study in the city.

Even though I was eight months pregnant, I had looked forward so much to our brighter future together in the city.

But to my shock and horror, Eugene led me to the courthouse, divorced me, and grabbed Janice's hand instead.

I felt the last of my hope die away as I watched Eugene and Janice get on the train that would bring them out of the village and into their new city life.

That night, I decided to accept the offer from the National Archeology Certification and went abroad to further my studies.

A month later, I bumped into Rupert, my first love, who had been leading his own inspection team in the same country at that time.

Later on, we confirmed our relationship and got married. I gave birth to our son, Cody Kingston, just a year later.

If it hadn't been for the National Archeology team asking me to come to this village for a survey, I would never have set foot on this soil again, much less bump into Eugene.

Janice gritted her teeth when she heard what Eugene said.

However, someone then announced, "Mr. Kingston's just wrapped up his work and is on the way to the village now! He'll be observing alongside Mrs. Kingston during the survey!"

Janice grinned at once.

"That's enough of your nonsense, Maria Johnston. Since we never got to meet Mrs. Kingston, that can only mean that she's also coming along with Mr. Kingston. You're going to find yourself thrown in jail if you keep impersonating her like this. Behave yourself!"

The rest of the villagers buzzed with excitement.

"Mr. Kingston's car is coming! He's such a mysterious person. I wonder if we'll get to meet him!"

After all, Rupert had been the one donating all the funds used to build new schools, housing projects, and agricultural infrastructure in the village.

The newspapers had also described him as a 30-something-year-old billionaire with a main factory in Somerville, and had a very adorable four-year-old son who could recite classical works at the age of three.

"Say, with how smart Mr. Kingston is, I really wonder what Mrs. Kingston looks like!" some of the other female villagers exclaimed among themselves. "Since she's an archeologist, that must mean she's very tanned because she worked under the sun for hours."

"No matter what she looks like, we must all properly thank Mr. and Mrs. Kingston for helping improve all the village infrastructure over the past few years!"

An older villager nodded and reminded everyone, saying, "Perk up, everybody! They were also the ones who installed electricity poles in the village. Make sure to thank them well!"

They started getting restless when the black luxury car finally slowed down before them.

A villager tugged me aside and said, "Maria, it's still not too late to beg Mr. Doyle and get back on his good side! You might even get mentioned when Mr. Kingston acknowledges the factory managers later on!"

Meanwhile, Eugene stood proudly amidst the crowd of villagers with a wide smile on his face, clearly waiting for Rupert to acknowledge him and praise him for a job well done.

I narrowed my eyes at him and said nothing. Instead, I just looked at the car.

The luxury car rolled to a stop. The villagers immediately rushed forward, thrusting bouquets of flowers and gifts at the doors in hopes of gaining Rupert's attention.

Janice even shoved the rest of the people aside and stood at the front, opening the door for Cody herself.

"Be careful, little one!" she cooed. "Here, come with me, and I'll bring you to the best food spots in the village!"

Cody was wearing suspenders as he jumped out of the car, but he wouldn't let Janice touch him. Then, he ran straight toward me.

The villagers watched in confusion.

"Mommy!" Cody exclaimed giddily as he stuffed a greasy sandwich wrapper into my hands. "Daddy bought me sandwiches! And I left two for you, Mommy!"

"Janice was killed by Brutus. And the baby also wasn't mine; it was Brutus'. The child protection services have already taken him away," Eugene cried. "I—""It has nothing to do with us," I said, cutting him off. I then placed a protective hand on my belly and said, "I have a husband and children now. I'm very happy with my life."Cody suddenly poked his head out from Rupert's arms and asked, "Mommy, why is that weird man crying?"I pecked him on the cheek and said, "Because he did something wrong."The rain continued pelting down from the skies.Eugene watched as the three of us went back inside the house that was filled with warmth, and the door slowly closed in front of him.Just before the last of the light was shut out, he saw me say something to Rupert, and Rupert then smiled and rubbed my belly. The next morning, I found the blue bag Eugene had been holding last night hanging outside the door when I opened it. The three things were still inside the bag, but there was so

Janice suddenly began screaming Eugene's name out loud."Eugene Doyle, you piece of trash! You bastard! You heartless man! How dare you do this to me! I'll kill you!"The baby in her arms had such a huge fright that it wouldn't stop screaming and crying.Fred flipped the stack of documents in his hand and said, "Also, about stealing Ms. Johnston's job from her—""I never stole anything from her!" Janice shrieked. "She never wanted it in the first place!"Benjamin suddenly jumped to his feet. "You're so shameless! There was an acceptance letter for Maria even before she married into the Doyle family, but you got Jack to pose as the mailman and intercepted the letter before she could get it!"I saw everything with my own two eyes! And if you and Brutus hadn't come and threatened me back then, I would have already spilled the truth a long time ago!"Janice was shocked. The final verdict had been given, and the sun had only just begun setting on the horizon, dyeing the brick wall ou

"I am nothing but a village girl who grew up in the countryside! How was I supposed to compare with her, with her fancy college degree?" Janice yelled back in Eugene's face. "She'd already enjoyed her life before that. Why couldn't I be the one to enjoy my life next?"She's nothing but a bitch, and she deserved everything that came to her! I just never thought that she'd manage to find someone else after everything. She's nothing but leftovers!"Eugene stared at Janice and felt as though he'd just been struck by a bolt of lightning. He knew all along that Janice had been a little spoiled, but he never thought that she was this evil. He simply couldn't fathom how much pain she'd caused me in the past.Eugene shoved her to the ground. "You're a cruel, heartless woman!"Janice suddenly grabbed at her belly and curled up on the ground in a fetal position. Blood started seeping through her pants and onto the dirt."The baby! My baby! He's coming out!"Eugene quickly rushed Janice to

Eugene looked like he'd just been struck by lightning."That's impossible! No way! You were eight months pregnant!"He suddenly grabbed my shoulders and yelled, "Why? Why did you do that? He was our flesh and blood!""Why? Didn't Janice tell you why?" I responded coldly, flinging his arms off me. "I was a helpless young woman abandoned in the village by her husband when she was eight months pregnant! "How was I supposed to raise the child on my own? Fresh air and sunshine? Did you know that I even had to borrow the money to go through the abortion?""You're lying!" Eugene suddenly exclaimed, looking agitated. "I told Janice to give you five hundred dollars and five sacks of grain! That would have been more than enough for you and the baby to get by until I returned!"Suddenly, he stopped talking and froze. That was because I was looking at him like he was a monkey in a circus."Five hundred dollars? Five sacks of grain?" I echoed, shaking my head. "Did you know, Eugene, that th

Eugene glared at my and Rupert's wedding photo, looking as though he wanted to burn holes in my phone with his eyes.If this were five years ago, I would probably still feel bad for him or pity him. But now, not anymore.I turned and looked at Rupert next to me. He was currently crouched over on the ground, lacing up Cody's shoes for him. The sun was warm on his skin, giving him a rather ethereal glow. The luxury car was still parked over in the corner, and there were still two breakfast sandwiches he'd bought left in the glove compartment for me.The villagers immediately began chatting excitedly among themselves."Oh, my goodness! Who would have thought that Maria would end up marrying the richest man in the world? And to think that Eugene even tried giving her a bunch of ten-dollar bills earlier! How embarrassing!""That's right! He thought that Maria was living a terrible life on the streets all these years, but now, look at her! She's a famous archeologist, and her husband i

I crouched down and gently wiped the mayonnaise from the corner of Cody's mouth."Yes, Cody. Be a good little boy today, okay? Mommy still has some work to do. But Mommy will bring you blackberry-hunting later after work. Would you like that?""Yay!" Cody nodded eagerly as he tugged a corner of my shirt. "Daddy also promised to teach me how to read hieroglyphs today!"He'd barely finished speaking when a pair of bright, shiny leather shoes stopped right before us. It was Rupert.Rupert crouched over and picked Cody up, carrying him on his hip. Then, he took the plastic document folder from my hands and said, "You must be tired, honey."I looked at his sweet smile and shook my head, saying that I wasn't.A moment later, Rupert's secretary, Samson Waters, came up to us and addressed the villagers, "This is Mr. Rupert Kingston, and next to him are his wife, Ms. Maria Johnston, and his son, Mr. Cody Kingston."Mr. Kingston would like to thank everyone for taking such good care of Ms
