When the reply came in, Derek pushed the door open and leaned against the frame with a bowl of fried rice.

"Still mad?"

I zipped up my bag.

"Took you long enough. I thought you couldn't tell."

"Stop being dramatic and eat something. By the way, how's the car?"

Rare of him to show concern for me. Or maybe he was just worried about his car getting dirty.

"I can pick it up tomorrow."

"Good. Get it washed while you're at it. And tell your mom to stop bringing seafood."

A text from Mom popped up on my phone.

"Viv, don't come out in this rain. And remind Derek I'll bring him more seafood next time."

My mouth twisted.

"Don't worry. There won't be a next time."

My answer caught him off guard. He was about to say something when a knock at the door cut him off.

Megan poked her head in.

"Derek, Kitty doesn't have any food. I need to go buy some cat food."

I grabbed my bag and stood up, but Derek held me back.

"I'll drop you off on the way."

"But the pet store isn't in the same direction as Vivian's hotel. I'm afraid the cat might die."

Megan's eyes went red, as if the perfectly healthy cat was about to drop dead any second.

Derek hesitated for two seconds, then let go of my hand. "Just take a cab. It's not far."

Back when I lived by the coast, the rainy season lasted for months.

During those months, Derek practically glued himself to me, terrified I'd get caught in the rain.

That was when he made up his mind to save up for a car, swearing he'd never let me get rained on again.

Now we had two cars, and yet I'd been caught in every rain life had to offer.

I walked out into the downpour and found that the ride-hailing app had crashed.

Derek's car pulled up from behind.

Megan sat in the passenger seat, her eyes sweeping over me with a look of triumph.

She took in every detail of my bedraggled state.

I'd hired Megan because she and Derek shared the same background, the same dreams.

Derek wanted to help her the way my father had once helped him.

One thing led to another, and the helping found its way home.

Then again, my father's help had found its way home too.

He didn't just give Derek his daughter. He handed him the gallery he'd spent his life building.

By the time I reached the hotel, I was soaked head to toe.

Mom was asleep. I went to the laundry room to dry my clothes.

A notification on the delivery app showed a new order for cat food and litter, shipped to our apartment.

On Megan's Facebook, my guest room had already become her bedroom.

I picked up my phone and sent another text to that person.

"I also want the gallery back."

By morning, the rain had eased up.

When I got to the office, my assistant pulled me aside.

"Vivian, the lead coordinator for the exhibition has been changed to Megan?"

I froze, then saw the announcement Derek had posted in the group chat.

An announcement. Not a discussion.

I stormed into his office, holding up my phone.

"What is this?"

"I've been working on this for the better part of a year, and you just swap me out?"

He looked up, as if he'd been waiting for me to come.

Calm and indifferent, he informed me all over again.

"Vivian, don't make a scene. She needs this opportunity. You can afford to sit one out."

My heart clenched. This exhibition was the one my father had entrusted to me on his deathbed.

Derek had been at his bedside, promising to see it through.

"Have you forgotten what you promised him?"

My voice trembled. I wanted to fight this out with him.

But then I noticed the necklace on Megan's chest.

It was the gift Derek gave me after selling his very first painting.

Noticing my gaze, Megan lifted the pendant with her fingertip, her eyes brimming with wounded innocence.

"Vivian, I just thought it was pretty. Please don't be mad. I'll give it back right now."

"It's just a necklace. Not worth anything. Keep it if you like."

His casual dismissal severed the last thread of attachment I had left.

Right. Ten years of love. Not worth anything either.

If it's broken, let it break.

As I left his office, Mom's call came in.

I picked up but didn't hear her voice. Instead, there was shouting on the other end.

"You're the thief!"

"This is not your daughter's home!"

"This place belongs to my son-in-law!"

My stomach dropped.I grabbed Nathan and we rushed to the gallery. When we arrived, the police were already there. They had the intruder contained.I looked closer at the security footage. A figure in black was creeping through the gallery.I couldn't see a face, but the silhouette was eerily familiar. I couldn't place it.The police said the intruder was still inside but hiding somewhere in the building.Whoever it was knew the layout well.A thought flashed through my mind. I went straight to the collection room. The second I opened the door, a figure lunged out.Nathan shoved me aside, shielding me with his body. A knife caught his arm, slicing it open.Ignoring the wound, he tackled the intruder to the ground. He pulled back the hood.Megan's face stared back at me.She screamed."This is all your fault. I can't find a job! I have nowhere to live!""I hate you, Vivian."I looked at her coldly, remembering the day she'd first joined the company.I'd wanted to mentor her, treated her

Two weeks later, I officially reclaimed the gallery.I went through every one of my father's paintings and put them back in order. This time, Nathan didn't ask me to come work with him.He knew I would never depend on anyone again.Still, it was thanks to his help that my father's exhibition went ahead as planned. On opening day, the turnout was huge.Industry professionals came out to show their support.Old friends of my father's.Former apprentices. And young artists who came to study his work.Seeing his paintings so well received, Mom and I were deeply moved. As the museum closed for the evening, I spotted a blurred figure not far from the entrance.A silhouette I could trace with my eyes closed. But he didn't dare come any closer. He stood under a sycamore tree across the street, soaked in the fading light. My hand paused on the lock. I didn't go to him.I locked the door, turned, and walked toward Nathan.Ten years. From eighteen to twenty-eight.The man I'd walked beside for a

"It's not possible... it's not possible..."Derek's eyes glazed over as the words sank in.He started muttering to himself.I opened the door and got out.A fine drizzle was falling. The forecast said the typhoon was almost over. I stepped out and realized I hadn't brought an umbrella.I was about to head inside when an umbrella appeared over my head.I looked up. Nathan was standing there, holding the umbrella with a goofy grin."What are you doing here?"I was surprised."Come with me. I have something to show you."Half-skeptical, I followed him to a private art museum. The spacious venue was set up and ready. My father's final work and the two paintings Derek had used as collateral hung in the most prominent positions.I walked over and stood before them for a long time. Not until my eyes had blurred did I turn to him and say thank you. While Derek had been busy with Megan's mother, I'd already quietly moved the paintings to Nathan. Thanks to him, my father's life's work was safe.

Three days later, I had just stepped out of my new apartment when I saw Derek. His eyes were bloodshot. He charged at me, grabbed my arm, and dragged me into his car."Vivian, ten years together, and you're really going to end it like this?""You're pushing me off a cliff."He scowled, his voice dripping with resentment, as if everyone else was to blame.I looked at him and almost laughed."Save the feelings talk. If you want to cut your losses, figure out how to get those paintings back."He slammed the steering wheel."Everything I've done these years, hasn't it been for your father and for you? Keeping this whole thing afloat, you think that's been easy?"I'd thought that with everything out in the open, if he just admitted what he'd done, I wouldn't push any further. But even now, he was playing the victim. When my father entrusted the gallery to him, it had been running perfectly. Now it had deteriorated to the point where he was pawning paintings to keep it afloat. And on top of

"She... she doesn't have a key."Derek stammered. I smiled."Then go get one. I've got all day."Megan left reluctantly.Derek took my hand."I told you, just leave it to me. If you've got time, you could go look at wedding dresses. Or rings."I stared at him. The audacity was almost laughable."Derek, you still think I'm going to marry you?"The smile froze on his face. His Adam's apple bobbed."I know you're still angry. I've sent Megan and her family away.""Your father's painting, I've had someone restore it.""Just give me a chance to make it right, okay?"I pulled my hand away. His hung in the air.Megan came running back with the key and placed it in Derek's hand.I stepped back and waited for him to open the door.He hesitated, still trying to stall, then turned back to me."Viv, maybe another day. It's all dusty..."I snatched the key and threw the door open.I hit the light switch. The room flooded with light. My fists clenched. I walked to where the two paintings should have

When we returned to the hospital after lunch, Derek was there. He stood by Mom's bed. A fruit basket and a bouquet of lilies sat on the nightstand. The moment I saw the lilies, I rushed over and threw them in the trash outside the door."What are you doing here, Derek?""My mother is allergic to lilies. She just started getting better, and you're trying to make her sick again?"I hissed.Nathan called for a doctor to check on Mom.Mom's face was white as a sheet. Tears fell before I could stop them.Thankfully, there was no real harm done.Derek pulled me out of the room and softened his voice."Vivian, I really forgot. It's my fault. Completely my fault.""And about your father's painting. I already chewed Megan out. I told everyone involved in the exhibition.""No one else will ever set foot in your father's collection room again, okay?"I watched him coldly. His sincerity was flawless. A perfect act.So I tested him."I want to see the rest of Dad's paintings."Cold sweat beaded on
