Chapter 3

Penulis: Shallow Teal
Over the next few days, Victor grew busier and busier preparing for the pack's late-fall diplomatic banquet.

A representative from the Western Chamber of Commerce was coming to negotiate next year's trade agreement.

But on the day of the banquet, I came down with a fever. By afternoon, my head felt heavy and foggy.

I dragged myself to the banquet despite feeling awful, only to stop dead in my tracks. Louise was sitting in my seat, right beside the head of the long table.

Victor sat next to her, leaning slightly in her direction as though they were having a private conversation.

Servers carried drinks past me. A young maid whispered to another, "The Alpha and Ms. Mercer look so good together. Somehow this banquet feels even grander than last year's."

"I know! Luna always looks cold and unapproachable. Ms. Mercer is so sweet and considerate. I wish she were our Luna."

I drew a deep breath and strode toward them, my heels clicking sharply against the floor.

"Victor."

He looked up, visibly startled, then hurried over. "Tia, are you feeling better? Teresa told me you had a fever, so I—"

He reached for my forehead, but I turned my head just enough to avoid his touch.

"I'm fine," I cut him off stiffly. "Why is someone in my seat?"

"You weren't feeling well enough to attend," Victor explained, instinctively stepping in front of me. "So I asked Louise to stand in for you—"

Maybe my stare was too sharp. The rest of his sentence died in his throat.

Louise lowered her head and stepped aside, looking utterly helpless.

The representative looked from Louise to me, a little confused. "And this is?"

I straightened my back.

"Tia. I'm the Luna of this pack, and I negotiated our trade agreements for the past two years."

"Ah, a pleasure to meet you." He turned to Victor with a knowing smile. "A dignified Luna and a lovely Ms. Mercer. You're a lucky man, Alpha."

Victor stiffened and reached for my hand.

I pulled away before he could touch me.

I never thought he'd humiliate me in public.

Moonlight streamed through the windows, and for a moment, I wanted to ask the Moon Goddess a question. If the mate bond she had ordained conflicted with a vow made in her name, which would she honor?

But the goddess gave me no answer.

All I heard was the soft patter of rain and the wind howling outside, sounding almost like my wolf crying.

That night, back in our bedroom, the mark on my neck started to burn.

Even the slightest touch sent a sharp sting through my skin. The flesh around the mark had turned dark red, as though the edges had been scorched.

My unease grew, and I stayed awake in the bedroom all night, afraid to sleep.

Then I heard voices outside. Following the voices and the light spilling into the hallway, I made my way to Louise's guest room. Victor was in his wolf form, licking a wound on Louise's neck.

It was one of the most primal ways for wolves to comfort each other.

Louise had her arms wrapped around Victor's neck and looked so fragile.

So utterly dependent on her Alpha.

I stood in the doorway, gripping the frame. My legs went numb, and I couldn't take another step.

On the night Victor marked me, he'd shifted into his wolf form and licked me the same way.

He'd told me it was his wolf's way of claiming its territory. Something that happened only once in a lifetime.

But now his wolf was licking Louise, lingering at her neck as if he couldn't pull himself away.

Was he... claiming her too?

I stumbled back a step, all my strength gone.

Victor heard me and jerked his head up. When he saw me, he shifted back, grabbed his clothes, and strode over.

"Tia, I..." His voice was strained. He reached for my hand.

I pulled my hand away and stared at him, my eyes burning with tears.

"You knew I wasn't feeling well." My voice came out painfully hoarse.

His lips parted, but he looked away before he could say anything. "I'm sorry. She was in so much pain tonight, and I... I couldn't help myself."

I stared at him, disappointment weighing so heavily on my chest that it hurt to breathe.

"And what if she needs you to mark her?"

Victor said nothing.

His face went red, and his hands trembled.

I swayed on my feet, and he finally reached out to steady me.

"That will never happen. Tia, you have to believe me."

His grip tightened around my wrist. He still smelled like Louise.

I couldn't bear to imagine how he'd held her before I arrived, licking her neck and soothing her pain.

When I said nothing, Victor hurried to reassure me. "Tia, I swear it won't happen again! Teresa's already found a solution. At the next full moon, the pull of our fated-mate bond will finally be broken, and everything will—"

A faint whimper from inside the room cut him off.

Victor's body jerked as though something had tugged at him.

He straightened and glanced toward the room, then looked back at me, torn.

"Go." I lowered my gaze, my heart already turned to ash.

Relief washed over his face. "I'll come check on you in a bit, sweetheart."

But I was done giving him chances. I quietly sent a text. "Find me a way to erase the mark. I'll come see you at dawn."

Teresa answered right away. "What happened?"

I didn't answer.

Much later, my phone lit up again. "I have a potion that might work, but it's going to hurt. A lot. Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

Victor never came back that night. I sat by the window until morning, watching the darkness slowly give way to the pale, washed-out light of dawn. I hadn't slept a wink.

The next day, before I could go to Teresa, Louise came looking for me.

Tia's POV:Victor came back several more times, but I refused to see him.The gifts he asked Noah to bring me were left to gather dust in a storage cabinet.I spent all my time at sea, letting the water slowly mend my battered heart. My old life began to feel like something from another lifetime. The memories were finally starting to fade. Then Louise showed up again.I couldn't sleep that night. Around two in the morning, I slipped on a cardigan and stepped outside the dive center for some fresh air.The sea was pitch-black, lit only by the faint glow of a distant lighthouse. And then I smelled it.Lily perfume.Underneath it was the rancid stench of rot.I spun around.Louise stood on the boardwalk behind me, her shadow stretching across the wooden planks in the moonlight. She was so thin that her eyes had sunk deep into their sockets and her cheekbones jutted out. Her face was deathly pale, like a ghoul that had crawled out of the earth."Luna. Long time no see.""What are you doing

Tia's POV:His gaze moved from my face to where his mark had once been. Then he reached out like he wanted to touch my neck.I frowned, covered it with my hand, and stepped back.He froze, his hand suspended in midair."I..." He opened his mouth, his voice strained. "I've come to take you home.""That's not my home anymore," I said calmly.Victor flinched as though I'd punched him."No, Tia." His voice was painfully hoarse. "I know I was wrong. You have every right to be angry with me, to blame me for everything. But please don't say that.He rubbed a hand over his face and continued. "The fated-mate pull is gone, and Louise... she's gone too. There's no one between us anymore.""That has nothing to do with me." I took a deep breath and looked him in the eye. "As you can see, Victor, I erased the mark. There's nothing between us now."His mouth fell open, and his eyes reddened instantly. "I know I was wrong! We can renew the mark! No, if you're afraid of the pain, I won't mark you. Jus

Victor's POVThe full moon finally came, bringing my chance to sever the fated bond between Louise and me.At the altar, Louise was tied down on the stone slab, gagged, her eyes full of fear.Teresa glanced at Louise, who was struggling with all her strength. "Alpha, if either party is unwilling, the backlash could be devastating. Especially for you. Forcing the bond apart means shattering the fated attraction and tearing it from your very flesh and blood. You could—"I cut her off coldly."I said, begin."Teresa sighed. She raised her hand and traced runes over the altar. Silver light washed over everything.Louise let out a desperate whimper, fighting the ritual with every ounce of willpower she had left. Her resistance only intensified the backlash against me for defying our fated bond.It felt as though a red-hot chain were whipping across my limbs and torso, again and again. It hurt so much I couldn't stand. I doubled over and coughed up a mouthful of blood. My vision swam. The pa

Victor's POVI roughly set Louise down and turned to run out. That chalice held the vows Tia and I had made with the Moon Goddess as our witness."Alpha!" Louise grabbed the hem of my shirt.I looked down at her, my brow furrowed. "Let go.""You can't go." Louise's voice changed, and her eyes burned into mine. "The chalice is already broken. Going now won't change anything.""What did you just say?" I tore her hand away. She looked up at me, her eyes red-rimmed. "Victor, don't you understand? This is the Moon Goddess's will. The broken chalice is a sign. She's giving you a chance to get your life back on track.""What's that supposed to mean?" I asked through clenched teeth."I'm your fated mate," Louise said, slowly and clearly. "I'm the one you're meant to spend your life with."Her helpless facade vanished. She held my gaze, her voice as alluring as a siren's song."Whatever you had with Tia was only temporary. It's over now. You should come back to me."A shiver ran through me.I s

Victor's POV:I stayed by Louise's bedside all night without getting a wink of sleep. She was pale, occasionally letting out soft whimpers like a frightened pup. She looked so fragile, so desperately in need of my protection.Tia used to be like that.I was the one who told her the pack needed both of us to protect it.The Tia who cried easily vanished, replaced by the calm, steady Luna the pack needed. She loved me so much, and lately I'd been neglecting her.Guilt tightened my chest. I absently rubbed the ring on my left hand, deciding I'd go check on Tia as soon as Louise woke up.At the first light of dawn, Louise finally opened her eyes."Alpha..." Her voice was hoarse. She reached out and caught my wrist. "Have you been here the whole time?"I nodded and tried to pull away, but her eyes immediately filled with tears."I thought you'd abandoned me. The Luna was terrifying yesterday. You're the only one who makes me feel safe." She pressed her cheek into my palm.I stared down at h

Louise stood before me, holding the key to a hidden cabinet in Victor's study. "Luna, we need the sacred chalice for the bond-severing ritual. The Alpha asked me to retrieve it, but I'm scared to go into the chapel alone."I should have said no.But Teresa had warned me that the potion could only erase the mark on my neck. It couldn't undo the vows sealed within the sacred chalice. If I didn't undo them myself before the mark was erased, the vows would stay in my blood and bones like barbs. After some hesitation, I got up and accompanied Louise to the chapel. The chalice rested on a pedestal at the center of the altar. Louise picked it up and turned to me. "When I was little, the elders told me this chalice was meant to hold the blood of fated mates."The meek expression on her face gave way to a sly, calculating look. Before I could step back, she threw a handful of acrid powder at me.I choked and coughed. A strange heat spread through my body, and silver light spilled from my finger
