Chapter 3

Author: Sunnys
With that, I grabbed my sobbing son and rushed out of the house.

I heard hurried footsteps behind me.

I thought Adrian had come after us.

Like a fool, I looked back, only to find it was Chloe.

"Mandy, don't be angry. Adrian is just being stubborn. Even after all these years with me, he never stopped worrying about you and Noah. He just couldn't get past the way you tricked him into marrying you."

Her voice was soft.

"But I'm so grateful to Adrian. He gave Leo the father he'd never had. He truly loves Leo as his own.

"Mandy."

Chloe took my hand.

The gesture looked friendly, but every word cut straight into my heart. "Leo finally has a father. He's very possessive and doesn't want Adrian to have any other children.

"Poor Leo. I divorced his father right after he was born. Without Adrian, we'd be all alone, and life would be so hard.

"I'll convince Adrian not to divorce you. Don't worry. He listens to me.

"But I do have one condition.

"Could you please let Leo have his daddy to himself instead of making him share Adrian with Noah? When they're older and can handle it, we can tell them the truth. There's no rush, right?"

My chest felt so heavy that I couldn't speak.

Because Leo had a hard life, Adrian had to be his dad?

What about Noah? He'd spent his whole life barely seeing his own father. Hadn't he suffered too?

What did her son's sad story have to do with me? Why should Noah pay for it?

She spoke so sweetly and made herself look so pitiful that I couldn't help scoffing.

"Spare me the sob story, Ms. Davis."

Through gritted teeth, I said, "Do me a favor and tell Adrian this. For Noah's sake, I swallowed my anger before. Now, for Noah's sake, I can leave him. Make sure he understands. I'm the one who doesn't want him anymore!"

For a long moment, Chloe said nothing. Then she dropped the act.

"Even better. Leo and I should thank you.

"Oh, and I might as well tell you. We lived together the entire time we were abroad. To everyone there, we looked like a happy family of three. Adrian says he's given me everything except a marriage certificate.

"Leo and I finally have a home, and I'm not letting anyone take my happiness away!"

I trembled with rage.

"Chloe, you have no shame!"

I raised my hand, but before I could slap her, I lowered it again.

I wandered the streets with my son, not knowing where to go.

Finally, the last shred of dignity and strength I'd clung to disappeared.

I crouched, wrapped my arms around my son, and broke down sobbing.

Noah and I found a hotel to stay in for the time being.

It poured that night. Thunder rolled again and again, and Noah was too frightened to sleep. He kept burrowing into my arms.

"Mommy, whenever it thundered before, you always said that when Daddy came home, he'd protect us.

"But Daddy came home, and now he's not my daddy anymore..."

His small voice trembled with pain.

It broke my heart.

Ever since he was a baby, Noah had been afraid of thunder, just like me.

Adrian knew all of that.

I didn't sleep at all that night.

The next day, exhausted, I arranged new identities for Noah and me.

My dad had already arranged the identity paperwork for us through a trusted contact. It took effect that day, with my new documents bearing the name Lena Jennings.

When I got back, Noah had a fever.

His little body was burning up.

I rushed him to the hospital, only to learn that all the pediatric specialists on duty had been reassigned at the last minute.

"Why? How could this happen?"

Sobbing, I begged the hospital staff for help.

"There's nothing we can do, ma'am. Adrian Shaw, the richest man in LA, had every pediatric specialist he could reach sent to treat his son after the boy suffered a severe asthma attack during last night's storm. Your son... your son only has a fever. We'll give him medicine to bring it down. Please be patient and wait."

I had no choice but to swallow my pride and call Adrian in tears. I begged him to send back just one pediatrician to see Noah.

"Adrian, Noah is burning up. It could be pneumonia. Please, I'm begging you—"

"Playing the victim again?"

Adrian's voice was ice-cold. "Do you even hear yourself? You're jealous, scheming, and willing to do anything to get your way!

"Yesterday, you fought with Chloe and slapped her so hard that her face swelled up. I haven't even dealt with that yet, and now you're pulling another stunt?"

I froze.

"What fight? When did I ever hit her?"

"Stop lying! Mandy Jennings, you've become so manipulative it's pathetic! Leo is having a serious asthma attack, and I don't have time for your games!"

He hung up. When I called back, it went straight to voicemail. He'd blocked me.

This time, Adrian left for good.He wired me a huge sum of money and said it was his last attempt to make things right.I sent back every last cent.I didn't want to owe him a thing. He never showed up again. We finalized the divorce through our lawyers without meeting again.A year later, I heard about him again."Do you remember your ex-husband, Adrian Shaw?"A friend visited me in New York and mentioned him out of nowhere."A year ago, he suddenly sold his company, gave away all the money he had left, and went off alone to volunteer as a teacher in a remote mountain community."He hasn't returned to LA since."I nodded and took a sip of coffee.I didn't care how he was doing anymore.I felt nothing.I smiled and changed the subject. That year, my bakery took off.I opened two more locations and loved staying busy.Noah had long since moved past the whole "no dad" thing. He no longer cared what anyone said and was happy and carefree again.Plenty of men were interested in me, but I t

For the next several days, Adrian didn't show up again.I'd almost put the encounter behind me when he came back, his arms loaded with gifts. He burst into my bakery and excitedly pulled out a precious ruby ring."I promised you a better ring when we got married, didn't I? Well, here it is."Then he eagerly set a pile of expensive toys and picture books in front of Noah."Buddy, Daddy was wrong. You and Mommy suffered even though neither of you deserved it, and that will never happen again. I'll do everything I can to make it up to both of you. I'll make you happy, I promise."Give Daddy one more chance, okay?"I frowned. The customers in the bakery noticed and began giving us strange looks.I sighed."I've already told you. We can't go back. Besides—""Are you still upset about Chloe?"Adrian interrupted before I could finish."I've cut Chloe out of my life. We'll never have anything to do with each other again."I kicked her son out too."He looked at Noah with absolute certainty. "N

With my dad's help, I'd managed to open a bakery.Recently, I'd landed a catering job to supply desserts and pastries for a conference. The event went smoothly, but then I noticed a photo of Noah and me in the conference's promotional materials. My heart clenched. That same night, I contacted the organizer and had the photo removed.I thought that would be the end of it, but then an email arrived from an unfamiliar address. It was just one short line. The line read, "Is it you, Mandy?"I deleted it and blocked the sender.I couldn't sleep that night. The next day, I decided to close the bakery for a while and take Noah somewhere else until things settled down. But I'd underestimated how fast Adrian could move.I left home at dawn. When I reached the bakery, I saw a man sitting on the doorstep. He looked familiar, yet I hardly recognized him.I stopped in my tracks.I turned and hurried away."Mandy!"It was Adrian's voice. He rushed up and grabbed my wrist.I hadn't seen him in a long

Adrian's ears began to ring. His mind went back five years."Mr. Shaw, someone let the truth slip after a few drinks. The person who drugged you that night was trying to secure a deal with the company, but you stumbled into the wrong room."When that person realized what had happened, they had no choice but to slip away quietly."I've since confirmed it with the person involved and checked the messages they sent that night."Their timeline matches the night you were with Mandy exactly!"Adrian was speechless. He gripped the phone, too devastated even to cry. After a long silence, the phone slipped from his hand and hit the pavement with a smack.Adrian slumped where he sat, completely lost. He'd blamed Mandy from the very beginning, and she'd been innocent all along. He was the one who had destroyed their marriage. Mandy had endured the pregnancy and given birth alone. She had fought through everything to raise Noah by herself. In the end, she'd died because of him.Adrian gasped for a

Chloe jumped. Then her eyes filled with tears. She covered her face and ran out, sobbing. When the door slammed shut, something inside Adrian seemed to close with it.He stared out the window for a long time.If he'd never let Chloe and her son move in, would any of this have happened?Leo wouldn't have had that asthma attack. Adrian wouldn't have given in to Chloe's pleas and diverted every pediatric specialist he could find to treat him.Noah wouldn't have developed pneumonia. He wouldn't have gone without care until...The more Adrian thought about it, the more his chest ached and the harder it became to breathe.Every bit of it was his fault. He was the one who had killed his wife and son. With that realization, Adrian slapped himself across the face again and again. The truth was, five years earlier, when he married Mandy, he really had cared about her.He simply couldn't stand women who manipulated and schemed. That was why he'd spent five years clinging to that grudge.More than

He couldn't hide his disappointment.Chloe wasn't happy about that."What's that supposed to mean? You don't want to see me?"Didn't you say you had no feelings for Mandy at all? Then why did you keep calling her name? You have no idea how much that hurt me!"Adrian felt a heavy weight settle on his chest. He gave Chloe an impatient look."And what about you? What have you done?"You gave interviews at the hospital claiming you're my wife and Leo is my son. How could you lie so casually? You know exactly who my wife and son are!"Adrian roared, a vein throbbing at his temple.Chloe immediately softened her voice."I... I just wanted to love you."I didn't mean any harm."She lowered her head as tears filled her eyes. She looked so fragile that anyone would have pitied her."Besides, you said it yourself. You said that even though we weren't married, I was your wife in your heart, and Leo was your son. That's why I... I'm sorry. I went too far."I thought you really meant it."She knew
