Chapter 4

Author: Sunnys
I held Noah in my arms, his small body burning with fever, and cried for a long time.

Luckily, the fever medicine started working, and his temperature came down a little.

His flushed little face was streaked with tears.

"Mommy, Daddy really doesn't want us anymore, does he?"

I didn't answer. I just held him.

In the end, it was my parents who called in a favor, found a doctor, and got him transferred to another hospital.

The tests showed Noah had severe pneumonia, and he had to be admitted.

For a whole week, I didn't see Adrian once.

But then I saw an Instagram post from Chloe.

Adrian was fussing over her and her son, taking care of their every need.

They held hands and looked blissfully happy.

The caption read, "Our little family of three."

I stared at the photo, laughing until I cried and crying until I laughed.

"Adrian, I hate you so much!"

By the next day, Noah was well enough to go home.

Before we left, I asked his doctor not to tell anyone that Noah had ever been there.

Then I went up to the hospital roof, recorded a video, and scheduled it to send later.

Once that was done, I took Noah and boarded a flight across the country.

Meanwhile, after sleeping with Chloe, Adrian noticed the ring Mandy had left on the desk.

She'd given it to him after they married at City Hall.

It was one of a matching pair. Mandy hadn't had much money, so each ring held only a tiny diamond.

Adrian had looked a little embarrassed at the time. He'd promised that when they finally held a proper wedding ceremony, he would give Mandy a ring with a huge diamond.

But that future never came.

Adrian touched his ring finger.

Over the years, he'd worn one ring after another and completely forgotten the matching set Mandy had bought for them.

For some reason, he thought of those rings again that day.

Uneasy, he called the children's hospital.

"A few days ago, Mandy Jennings brought Noah in with a high fever that wouldn't come down. Find his records and tell me what happened."

A few minutes later, the hospital called back.

"Mr. Shaw, we have no record of Noah being seen here."

Adrian's heart sank.

"I knew it. Mandy used Noah's health to manipulate me. She never knows when to stop."

The words came out cold and bitter.

Then he went back to the bedroom and lay down.

Then his phone chimed with a new email.

He opened it. It was a video.

In the video, Mandy stood on a rooftop, holding Noah and sobbing.

"Adrian, you chose that woman and her son and left Noah and me to die. I hate you!

"Thanks to you, Noah had a fever for so long that he's already... Adrian, I want you to remember this. You killed us both. I hate you!"

Then Mandy jumped off the roof with Noah in her arms.

An editor my dad had hired digitally altered the footage to make it look like I'd jumped with Noah in my arms. We'd never gone anywhere near the edge.

Adrian gasped, suddenly drenched in sweat.

He bolted upright in bed, waking Chloe beside him.

"Where are you going this late?"

"I'm going to find Noah," Adrian said, his voice shaking.

Before Chloe could say anything, he was gone, racing out into the night.

"No... It's impossible. They were fine. How could..."

On the way to the hospital, Adrian tried to call Mandy. Only then did he remember that he'd blocked her number.

He unblocked Mandy and called over and over, but every call went straight to voicemail.

Adrian completely panicked.

He stormed into the hospital and ordered the staff to search until they found Noah's file from the facility that had accepted his transfer.

The words "acute pneumonia, fever of 104°F" hit him like a blow.

"So Mandy wasn't lying."

He turned to the nurse beside him.

"Where's my son? What happened to him?"

The nurse looked confused.

"I don't know. His mom took him.

"It was pouring outside, and the child was burning with fever. He looked like he'd already... already stopped breathing.

"His mother was crying her eyes out."

Then Adrian's phone rang again.

"Hello, is this Mr. Shaw? This is the funeral home. Your family's ashes have been here for days. Why haven't you come to pick them up?"

This time, Adrian left for good.He wired me a huge sum of money and said it was his last attempt to make things right.I sent back every last cent.I didn't want to owe him a thing. He never showed up again. We finalized the divorce through our lawyers without meeting again.A year later, I heard about him again."Do you remember your ex-husband, Adrian Shaw?"A friend visited me in New York and mentioned him out of nowhere."A year ago, he suddenly sold his company, gave away all the money he had left, and went off alone to volunteer as a teacher in a remote mountain community."He hasn't returned to LA since."I nodded and took a sip of coffee.I didn't care how he was doing anymore.I felt nothing.I smiled and changed the subject. That year, my bakery took off.I opened two more locations and loved staying busy.Noah had long since moved past the whole "no dad" thing. For the next several days, Adrian didn't show up again.I'd almost put the encounter behind me when he came back, his arms loaded with gifts. He burst into my bakery and excitedly pulled out a precious ruby ring."I promised you a better ring when we got married, didn't I? Well, here it is."Then he eagerly set a pile of expensive toys and picture books in front of Noah."Buddy, Daddy was wrong. You and Mommy suffered even though neither of you deserved it, and that will never happen again. I'll do everything I can to make it up to both of you. I'll make you happy, I promise."Give Daddy one more chance, okay?"I frowned. The customers in the bakery noticed and began giving us strange looks.I sighed."I've already told you. We can't go back. Besides—""Are you still upset about Chloe?"Adrian interrupted before I could finish."I've cut Chloe out of my life. We'll never have anything to do with each other again."I kicked her son out too."He looked at Noah with absolute certainty. "N

With my dad's help, I'd managed to open a bakery.Recently, I'd landed a catering job to supply desserts and pastries for a conference. The event went smoothly, but then I noticed a photo of Noah and me in the conference's promotional materials. My heart clenched. That same night, I contacted the organizer and had the photo removed.I thought that would be the end of it, but then an email arrived from an unfamiliar address. It was just one short line. The line read, "Is it you, Mandy?"I deleted it and blocked the sender.I couldn't sleep that night. The next day, I decided to close the bakery for a while and take Noah somewhere else until things settled down. But I'd underestimated how fast Adrian could move.I left home at dawn. When I reached the bakery, I saw a man sitting on the doorstep. He looked familiar, yet I hardly recognized him.I stopped in my tracks.I turned and hurried away."Mandy!"It was Adrian's voice. He rushed up and grabbed my wrist.I hadn't seen him in a long

Adrian's ears began to ring. His mind went back five years."Mr. Shaw, someone let the truth slip after a few drinks. The person who drugged you that night was trying to secure a deal with the company, but you stumbled into the wrong room."When that person realized what had happened, they had no choice but to slip away quietly."I've since confirmed it with the person involved and checked the messages they sent that night."Their timeline matches the night you were with Mandy exactly!"Adrian was speechless. He gripped the phone, too devastated even to cry. After a long silence, the phone slipped from his hand and hit the pavement with a smack.Adrian slumped where he sat, completely lost. He'd blamed Mandy from the very beginning, and she'd been innocent all along. He was the one who had destroyed their marriage. Mandy had endured the pregnancy and given birth alone. She had fought through everything to raise Noah by herself. In the end, she'd died because of him.Adrian gasped for a

Chloe jumped. Then her eyes filled with tears. She covered her face and ran out, sobbing. When the door slammed shut, something inside Adrian seemed to close with it.He stared out the window for a long time.If he'd never let Chloe and her son move in, would any of this have happened?Leo wouldn't have had that asthma attack. Adrian wouldn't have given in to Chloe's pleas and diverted every pediatric specialist he could find to treat him.Noah wouldn't have developed pneumonia. He wouldn't have gone without care until...The more Adrian thought about it, the more his chest ached and the harder it became to breathe.Every bit of it was his fault. He was the one who had killed his wife and son. With that realization, Adrian slapped himself across the face again and again. The truth was, five years earlier, when he married Mandy, he really had cared about her.He simply couldn't stand women who manipulated and schemed. That was why he'd spent five years clinging to that grudge.More than

He couldn't hide his disappointment.Chloe wasn't happy about that."What's that supposed to mean? You don't want to see me?"Didn't you say you had no feelings for Mandy at all? Then why did you keep calling her name? You have no idea how much that hurt me!"Adrian felt a heavy weight settle on his chest. He gave Chloe an impatient look."And what about you? What have you done?"You gave interviews at the hospital claiming you're my wife and Leo is my son. How could you lie so casually? You know exactly who my wife and son are!"Adrian roared, a vein throbbing at his temple.Chloe immediately softened her voice."I... I just wanted to love you."I didn't mean any harm."She lowered her head as tears filled her eyes. She looked so fragile that anyone would have pitied her."Besides, you said it yourself. You said that even though we weren't married, I was your wife in your heart, and Leo was your son. That's why I... I'm sorry. I went too far."I thought you really meant it."She knew
