Chapter 4

Author: Trio Mountain
After I was discharged, I went home, packed my things, and moved out.

Once I'd blocked Evan's number, he couldn't reach me, so he went to my parents instead.

My mom tried to talk me out of it.

"We watched Evan grow up. He's a good-hearted boy. There isn't a soul in our neighborhood who doesn't like him."

She was right. Everyone said Evan was a good guy.

That was why I'd agreed when my parents set us up, and why I'd ended up marrying him.

It was only after the wedding that I realized being married to a saint was the dumbest thing a woman could do.

I'd made up my mind, and eventually my mom stopped pushing.

What I didn't expect was for her to have Evan pick me up the next morning for the drive back to my hometown over Memorial Day weekend.

When I got into the car, I saw there was someone else inside. It was a woman I'd never seen before.

Seeing me look at her, Evan explained nervously.

"Mara, this is Erica. She's new at the company, and she's from your hometown too. She heard we were driving back and wanted to come along.

"It's really hard to get a bus ticket over a long weekend, so I figured we could give her a ride since we're going that way anyway. Is that okay?"

I scoffed.

"Whatever. It's your car. Let whoever you want ride in it. We're getting divorced anyway. You don't need to run this kind of thing by me."

Evan opened his mouth as if to say something, then closed it.

We hadn't been on the highway long when my phone rang. It was an older lady who lived next door to us back home.

"Mara! Your grandpa got hit by a car outside the market! They've taken him to the county hospital!"

My blood ran cold. Grandpa had raised me, and I was closer to him than anyone. I couldn't bear to think about what I'd do if something happened to him.

As soon as I hung up, I turned to Evan, tears streaming down my face. "Drive faster! My grandpa's been in an accident!"

Evan's face changed, and he floored the gas.

"Don't panic. I'll speed up. If we skip the rest stops, we can be there in three hours."

But Erica, who'd taken the front passenger seat, pressed a hand to her stomach, looking uncomfortable.

"Evan, I'm so sorry. My stomach's been hurting this whole time. I was holding out for the rest stop. Or you could just drop me off at the next one, and I'll get my own ride."

Evan thought for a moment. "It's fine. We'll stop at the next rest area. I'll drive faster afterward and make up the time."

That stop took fifteen minutes.

We hadn't gone far when we reached the next rest area, and Erica clutched her stomach again. "I've got diarrhea. I need to go again."

Evan pulled over again.

With every minute that ticked by, I was going out of my mind.

I couldn't wait anymore.

I shoved the car door open and ran, crying, toward a highway patrol car parked nearby. I was going to ask the troopers for help. I had to get back to see my grandpa.

I'd almost reached it when my phone rang again.

"Mara, honey, I'm fine. The young fella who hit me was a good kid. He insisted on bringing me to the hospital for a full checkup. Doctor says there's nothing wrong with me, so don't you worry about me!"

At the sound of Grandpa's strong, steady voice, all the strength drained out of me. I sank to the ground and sobbed.

A few minutes later, I was back in Evan's car.

Evan tried to comfort me. "See, Mara? I told you your grandpa would be fine."

I didn't say anything.

The car was completely quiet, and Erica's stomach didn't hurt again.

When we reached my hometown, Evan stayed true to his good-guy routine and dropped Erica off first.

Her parents even came out of the house to thank him.

Evan got back into the car beaming, clearly pleased with himself.

"Okay, Mara, where to? Is your grandpa still at the hospital? Should we go pick him up first, or head straight home?" he asked, switching the destination on the GPS.

I looked straight ahead and calmly answered in three words.

"The county courthouse."

After that, Evan stopped bothering me.I thought we'd go our separate ways and each get on with our lives. I never imagined the last news I'd hear about him would come in such a horrific way. That day, the office gossip group chat suddenly blew up, and a shocking piece of news spread through the entire building.Evan Lawson was dead. He'd died in a car crash that was as absurd as it was horrific. As the gossip kept coming, the truth gradually came out. After I left him for good, Evan had been depressed for a while. But deep down, his compulsive need to please everyone and play the savior hadn't changed. Not only had he not learned his lesson, he'd doubled down, trying to prove his worth by "helping" people.Soon, he was back to playing the nice guy at work. This time, the person he drove to and from work every day was Chloe, an intern fresh out of college.Chloe's boyfriend, Tyler, was controlling and extremely petty. When Tyler saw Evan picking his girlfriend up and droppi

After the move, I made new friends and also picked up a new admirer: Reid Fletcher, a director at the company next door.Reid was cheerful and knew how to respect boundaries. He drove a Porsche, yet he was always finding excuses to bum a ride in my new car to and from work."Ms. Pierce, my car's in the shop again today. Mind giving me a lift?"He always came up with some lame excuse, smiling, before settling into my passenger seat like he owned it and handing me a bouquet of flowers and a cup of herbal tea at just the right temperature.I knew what he was after, and I didn't turn him away.Adult flirtation usually lives in what both people understand but never say out loud. Then one day, as Reid opened my passenger door as usual, a dark figure suddenly charged out from the side and punched him in the face.It was Evan."What are you doing?"I cried out and scrambled out of the car.Evan looked much more worn down than before, his eyes bloodshot. He pointed at Reid and roare

Not long after that, my company moved offices, and on my very first day in the new building, I heard the latest gossip about that day at the mall.As it turned out, our new office was right above Evan's company. In the elevator, I heard how things had played out for Evan and Denise. After the fight at the mall, Doug couldn't let it go. He took the whole thing straight to Evan's company and demanded that HR investigate whether the two of them were having an inappropriate relationship at work.Under pressure, the company actually did it. They went through the security footage, the chat logs, and even the expense reports. Two employees wearing badges from the company downstairs were in the elevator, discussing it heatedly."I heard they've been investigating for days. Did they find anything?""That's the hilarious part! They spent two weeks going through the footage and the chat logs, and there was nothing. Nothing inappropriate at all. They really were just coworkers!""Wait, ser

Apparently, the universe didn't think Evan had been punished enough. One weekend, I met a friend to go shopping at a mall downtown. We were just stepping off the escalator when I heard a shrill argument and a child crying nearby.I followed the sound and, to my surprise, saw Evan.Standing in front of him was Denise Harper, the coworker who was always hitching rides in his car, with a little girl of five or six beside her.And the man jabbing a finger in Evan's face, cursing him out, was big and burly, his face twisted with rage."Who the hell do you think you are? My wife and kid don't need you driving them around every day!"He roared and grabbed Evan by the collar.Evan's face turned red as he tried to explain."Look, man, you've got it all wrong! Denise and I are just coworkers. I know it's hard for her raising a kid while you're away so much. I was only trying to help...""Help? Screw your help!"He punched Evan in the face. Evan staggered and fell to the floor, blood t

"Let's go straight to the county courthouse and file for divorce."Oh, and how much was gas? I'll pay you back my share. There were three of us in the car, though, so I'm only covering a third."Evan froze."Why? Your grandpa's fine, isn't he? Why do you still want a divorce?"His words made all the fear I'd been holding back hit me at once. I glared at him, my eyes stinging."My grandpa's fine because he got lucky!"If something had happened to him today, I might have missed my last chance to see him, all because I was riding in your car!"I'm your wife. Why do you always put me behind everyone else?"I'm sick and tired of living like this!"Evan just stared at me blankly. "Why are you divorcing me?"Changing how someone sees the world is next to impossible, and Evan wasn't worth the effort of arguing. So I slapped him hard across the face."Enough talking. Drive to the courthouse!"In a daze, Evan followed me to the courthouse. When we came out after filing the paperwork
