Chapter 2

Penulis: Lychee Yogurt
Back then, Yvonne ran a dog food factory. My mother-in-law, a massive dog lover, used to buy all her dog food there.

Yvonne had always been polite and well-mannered around us. I never would have pegged her as the type to knowingly screw around with a married man and tear a family apart.

I didn't waste my breath. Reaching out, I ripped the heirloom locket right off her neck.

The chain snapped, leaving an angry red welt across her pale skin. She clutched her neck with a pained frown. "Ow!"

"This locket is mine," I snapped. "Push your luck again, and see just how nice I'll be next time."

I didn't actually want to waste my time causing a scene with her. When a man cheated, the blame fell squarely on him.

Yvonne's expression twisted into wounded indignation, her voice rising. "I only showed you respect for the sake of Shawn. He gave me that locket, so you'd better give it back."

"Besides, Shawn and I are together now. This is our daughter, Chloe Payne," she added. "I've always believed women shouldn't make things harder for each other. That's why I've always told Shawn to treat you better."

I scoffed at how effortlessly she flipped the script. She'd done the sleaziest thing imaginable but still managed to sound completely self-righteous.

She took her daughter from the maid and thrust her toward me.

"Sweetie, say hi to Aunt Summer," she instructed, every word deliberate.

She wore a smug look, playing the gracious bigger person. The subtext was glaring—if I didn't play along, it just proved I was petty.

Little Chloe looked up at me with innocent eyes and piped up, "Hi, Aunt Summer."

Fury flared in my chest, but I wasn't about to take it out on an innocent kid. Ignoring Yvonne entirely, I spun on my heel and walked off.

Suddenly, Yvonne lunged and grabbed my arm. The second I yanked my sleeve out of her grip, she threw herself to the ground with the kid, making it look like I had shoved her.

She let out a dramatic gasp of pain, and Chloe immediately burst out crying.

Within seconds, a crowd of onlookers swarmed us, hurling accusations without a clue what had actually happened.

"How could you push a mother holding a kid?" someone yelled.

"That woman is vicious! Whatever the issue is, she shouldn't take it out on a kid."

My face went stone-cold. I pointed a finger straight at Yvonne, who was still milking the victim act on the ground.

"She's a homewrecker who opened her legs for my husband and ruined my family," I snapped. "And I didn't push her. She threw herself down to put on a show. It's just a cheap trick to claw her way into my place."

With that, I turned and walked away without looking back.

Less than half an hour later, my phone was blowing up with calls from Shawn. Clearly, Yvonne had already run crying to him.

I ignored his calls, so he resorted to spamming my inbox with texts.

"When did you leave the island? Why didn't you wait for me to pick you up?

"You went too far today. What happened between Yvonne and me is on me. If you want to blame someone, blame me.

"Where are you right now? Let me come pick you up so our family can sit down and talk through this properly.

"Honey, I need you to know that no matter how many kids Yvonne and I have, you will always be the most important person in my life. My love for you has never changed."

His words made my stomach churn with disgust.

The truth was, the moment I set foot back in Marovelle, I had already retained a lawyer to go after him.

Just then, a notification pinged on my screen. Another $50 million loan had just been disbursed.

Over the past three years, Shawn had been using my personal information, colluding with corrupt bank insiders to siphon off a total of one billion dollars in loans behind my back.

My lawyer had already traced the paper trail—every single cent ended up in Yvonne's bank accounts.

While I was away, he'd showered Yvonne with money like there was no tomorrow. Luxury cars, sprawling estates—he even dropped astronomical sums at high-end auctions, outbidding everyone just to make her smile.

Back when we first arrived on the island, I had tested him. I called him, faking a sob. "Shawn, Tommy has a high fever. He's so sick, and there's no medicine here. Please wire me some cash so I can get him to a hospital."

He'd just brushed me off with an empty reassurance. "Boys are tougher than you think, honey. Just wipe him down with cold water to break the fever. To be honest, I'm practically living on instant noodles right now. I seriously don't have a single penny to spare."

"Summer, if you give me another chance to make this right, I'll leave for good. I'll even leave Chloe behind. I swear I'll never set foot in Marovelle again!" Yvonne begged, her voice shrill with panic."Summer, please! I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have been a homewrecker, and I shouldn't have had those horrible thoughts. I won't try to steal your man anymore. I swear I'll never do it again."I smirked. "What makes you think I would ever fight you over a piece of shit like him? You're sorry now? Too late. Everyone has to pay for what they've done eventually."I paused, turning my gaze to Chloe. "And as for your daughter, whether you want her or not is none of my business. What, did you expect me to be a sucker and raise your kid for you?"Yvonne shook her head frantically, utterly at a loss.Around us, the guests buzzed, whispering among themselves as they condemned the pair, scrambling to distance themselves."I'm never doing business with them again. They're both vile.""Bu

"Babe, they're just trying to drive a wedge between us! Please don't believe them!" Yvonne pleaded desperately. Her pleading worked, and Shawn actually wavered.Kieran barked at his men, "Play the video. Let's show them exactly how they dug their own graves."One of his men fired up the projector, and the screen lit up with a recording of Yvonne talking to the two men from earlier. The footage laid bare the entire manufacturing process of that lethal batch of kibble, leaving Yvonne with no room for denial. What she hadn't realized was that the tall plant manager, desperate for a safety net in case things ever went south, had secretly recorded their entire operation with a pinhole camera. The brief hesitation on Shawn's face instantly hardened into a murderous rage. He struck Yvonne with a vicious blow, sending her crashing hard onto the floor, Chloe tumbling down right along with her. The poor little girl began crying so violently she could barely catch her breath.Yvonne lay sp

The moment the rancid stench filled the room, one of the guests shouted, "Oh God! Forget humans—even a dog would turn its nose up at that!"Shawn quickly resealed the bag, but the lingering odor still made him double over and dry-heave.I was just as shocked. I had never opened any of those bags during our time on the island, so I had no idea they contained something so foul. After taking a moment to catch his breath, Shawn scrambled for an explanation. "It was perfectly fine when I shipped it out. It must have just spoiled from sitting around for so long."Yvonne, who had been quiet until now, chimed in to back him up. "Exactly. Anything would rot if you left it sitting around for three whole years."Kieran snapped his fingers. His men instantly escorted two strangers into the room.Utter bewilderment flashed across Yvonne's face. The two newcomers were middle-aged—one tall, the other thin. The tall one stepped forward to confess. "Three years ago, I was the plant manager at M

Shawn muttered, completely shell-shocked, "Tommy Payne, who exactly are you calling Daddy?"Only then did Tommy finally look over at Shawn, correcting him with boyish gravity. "Sir, my name is Tommy Luke, and my dad is Kieran Luke. You're the one who abandoned Mom and me, so why do you even care who I call Daddy?"Tommy had never forgiven Shawn for exiling us to that deserted island and forcing us to live off dog food. He was young, but he knew how to hold a grudge."Who said I abandoned you?" Shawn shot back. "I did it for your own good! I put you there temporarily to keep you safe. I told you I'd come back for you. How is that abandonment? You're my own flesh and blood. How could I ever abandon you?"He spoke with absolute conviction, framing his cruelty as protective fatherly love.Tears of rage welled in Tommy's eyes as he shouted his accusations."Do you have any idea what that place was like? It was a deserted island! A godforsaken wasteland full of wild beasts, with no cle

I glanced over at Yvonne, whose expression had soured completely. "I'm your wife? Then what does that make her? Your side piece? Your mistress?"Instead of looking even remotely embarrassed, Yvonne held her chin high, dripping with self-righteous arrogance. "I tried to be respectful, but you just kept pushing. What wealthy man doesn't have a few women on the side?"She scoffed, "So what if I'm Shawn's mistress? There's no law against a successful man having options. I've never done anything to hurt you, but here you are, acting like a psycho and embarrassing the entire Payne family. Do you honestly think this is how a wife should act?"She actually had the nerve to lecture me. A mistress claiming the moral high ground—what a joke!Shawn's dad, Paul Payne, rounded on me with the same self-righteous tone. "Look at how graceful and understanding Yvonne is! You can't even hold a candle to her. You're an absolute disgrace to the Payne family!"He paused, turning to Kieran with the smug

The moment Kieran stepped into view, the crowd parted instinctively. The smirks and whispers died instantly, replaced by looks of deference.Shawn was completely bewildered. He looked around the room, trying to locate the "Mrs. Luke" Kieran was talking about.Feigning composure, he stepped forward and extended his hand. "Welcome, Mr. Luke. Thank you for gracing my daughter's birthday party with your presence."Kieran completely ignored the outstretched hand. His face was a mask of cold fury, radiating a tension so suffocating that the entire room held its breath. Everyone knew Kieran's clout in Marovelle—he was a powerhouse, and nobody was stupid enough to make a sound when he was pissed.Kieran walked over to me and gently helped me up from the floor. His brow furrowed with heartache the moment he saw the vivid handprint burning across my cheek and the deep, bloody scratch on my neck."I'm so sorry, honey. I'm late," he murmured. His slender fingers lightly brushed the scratch o
