Chapter 3

Author: Lychee Yogurt
"Honey, we just need to stay strong. We'll get through these hard times together, okay?" Shawn cooed, his voice dripping with sickening hypocrisy.

The very next day, my appendix flared up. I was on the floor, writhing in agony, drenched in so much sweat it felt like I'd been dunked in a pool. I didn't even have the strength to make a phone call.

Tommy video-called Shawn, begging him to come take me to the hospital.

Shawn's face showed a flicker of concern—not enough to actually do anything, though.

"Just rub your mom's stomach," he told Tommy. "She'll be fine in a minute. It's probably appendicitis. That won't kill her."

Then he hung up in a hurry.

When I finally blacked out from the pain, Tommy, scared out of his mind, called Shawn right back.

But instead of helping, Shawn just chewed him out. "Tell your mom to stop faking it!"

When Tommy tried calling again, the line went straight to voicemail. Shawn had turned his phone off.

Appendicitis might not be a terminal illness, but the pain is absolute torture. That was the exact moment I realized a man who had checked out of a marriage was more terrifying than any monster.

I took a screenshot of the loan notification and forwarded it to my lawyer. "Keep this evidence on file. Wait for my signal to file the lawsuit."

Once I collected myself after that whole mess, I headed home and whipped up a four-course dinner.

Kieran was over the moon. He didn't even set his briefcase down before rushing over to press a kiss to my cheek. "Honey, you're treating me too well. I'm going to make sure I reward you properly tonight."

His idea of a "reward" was always the same bedroom routine, and he never seemed to tire of it.

I gave him a mock-stern glare. "Behave yourself."

After a bit of sweet banter, he finally got down to business. "Shawn invited me to his daughter's birthday party."

We looked at each other, our lips curving into knowing, confident smiles.

How could I possibly miss such a monumental event?

Two days later, Kieran and I arrived at the Payne estate for Chloe's birthday party.

Once we got inside, Kieran had to take an urgent international conference call, so I headed in first.

I looked around at the massive vintage-style mansion, located in the most expensive neighborhood in Marovelle.

Back when Shawn was lying to me about going bankrupt, shipping a ton of repackaged kibble to the island for me and Tommy, he hadn't hesitated to drop $1.5 billion to outbid everyone for this mansion—just because Yvonne liked it.

A tidal wave of hatred washed over me, fueling my steps with determined rage as I strode inside.

The moment I stepped into the main hall, Yvonne, dressed in a stunning evening gown and holding her daughter, spotted me first.

She walked over, her eyes flashing with provocation. "Sweetie, look, your Aunt Summer is here to wish you a happy birthday."

Then she raised her voice on purpose. "Why don't you ask Aunt Summer what kind of gift she brought you?"

Her voice caught Shawn's attention. When he saw me, shock flashed across his eyes, followed by a hint of delight.

"I'm glad you've come around," he said. "Yvonne is taking the high road and isn't holding the incident from the other day against you. Dropping that nasty attitude of yours is a huge step forward."

Then his eyes dropped to my neck, landing on my late mother's heirloom locket resting against my collarbone. His tone shifted into a gentle command.

"Give the locket back to Yvonne. Her health hasn't been great, so I took her to see a spiritual master. He said only this specific locket can protect her vital energy. Things should belong to the people who actually need them. That's how they realize their true value."

He added, "Be a good girl. I've made my comeback now, so I can buy you as many lockets as you want. Yvonne is younger than you, so you should be the bigger person and let her have it."

Give it back?

He wanted me to give back what was rightfully mine to his mistress?

I was so furious I actually laughed out loud.

"Shawn Payne, I've seen some shameless people in my life, but you take the absolute cake!" I hissed. "This locket is the only keepsake my mom left me, and you stole it to give to your little mistress! And now you have the nerve to tell me to hand it over?"

"Summer, if you give me another chance to make this right, I'll leave for good. I'll even leave Chloe behind. I swear I'll never set foot in Marovelle again!" Yvonne begged, her voice shrill with panic."Summer, please! I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have been a homewrecker, and I shouldn't have had those horrible thoughts. I won't try to steal your man anymore. I swear I'll never do it again."I smirked. "What makes you think I would ever fight you over a piece of shit like him? You're sorry now? Too late. Everyone has to pay for what they've done eventually."I paused, turning my gaze to Chloe. "And as for your daughter, whether you want her or not is none of my business. What, did you expect me to be a sucker and raise your kid for you?"Yvonne shook her head frantically, utterly at a loss.Around us, the guests buzzed, whispering among themselves as they condemned the pair, scrambling to distance themselves."I'm never doing business with them again. They're both vile.""Bu

"Babe, they're just trying to drive a wedge between us! Please don't believe them!" Yvonne pleaded desperately. Her pleading worked, and Shawn actually wavered.Kieran barked at his men, "Play the video. Let's show them exactly how they dug their own graves."One of his men fired up the projector, and the screen lit up with a recording of Yvonne talking to the two men from earlier. The footage laid bare the entire manufacturing process of that lethal batch of kibble, leaving Yvonne with no room for denial. What she hadn't realized was that the tall plant manager, desperate for a safety net in case things ever went south, had secretly recorded their entire operation with a pinhole camera. The brief hesitation on Shawn's face instantly hardened into a murderous rage. He struck Yvonne with a vicious blow, sending her crashing hard onto the floor, Chloe tumbling down right along with her. The poor little girl began crying so violently she could barely catch her breath.Yvonne lay sp

The moment the rancid stench filled the room, one of the guests shouted, "Oh God! Forget humans—even a dog would turn its nose up at that!"Shawn quickly resealed the bag, but the lingering odor still made him double over and dry-heave.I was just as shocked. I had never opened any of those bags during our time on the island, so I had no idea they contained something so foul. After taking a moment to catch his breath, Shawn scrambled for an explanation. "It was perfectly fine when I shipped it out. It must have just spoiled from sitting around for so long."Yvonne, who had been quiet until now, chimed in to back him up. "Exactly. Anything would rot if you left it sitting around for three whole years."Kieran snapped his fingers. His men instantly escorted two strangers into the room.Utter bewilderment flashed across Yvonne's face. The two newcomers were middle-aged—one tall, the other thin. The tall one stepped forward to confess. "Three years ago, I was the plant manager at M

Shawn muttered, completely shell-shocked, "Tommy Payne, who exactly are you calling Daddy?"Only then did Tommy finally look over at Shawn, correcting him with boyish gravity. "Sir, my name is Tommy Luke, and my dad is Kieran Luke. You're the one who abandoned Mom and me, so why do you even care who I call Daddy?"Tommy had never forgiven Shawn for exiling us to that deserted island and forcing us to live off dog food. He was young, but he knew how to hold a grudge."Who said I abandoned you?" Shawn shot back. "I did it for your own good! I put you there temporarily to keep you safe. I told you I'd come back for you. How is that abandonment? You're my own flesh and blood. How could I ever abandon you?"He spoke with absolute conviction, framing his cruelty as protective fatherly love.Tears of rage welled in Tommy's eyes as he shouted his accusations."Do you have any idea what that place was like? It was a deserted island! A godforsaken wasteland full of wild beasts, with no cle

I glanced over at Yvonne, whose expression had soured completely. "I'm your wife? Then what does that make her? Your side piece? Your mistress?"Instead of looking even remotely embarrassed, Yvonne held her chin high, dripping with self-righteous arrogance. "I tried to be respectful, but you just kept pushing. What wealthy man doesn't have a few women on the side?"She scoffed, "So what if I'm Shawn's mistress? There's no law against a successful man having options. I've never done anything to hurt you, but here you are, acting like a psycho and embarrassing the entire Payne family. Do you honestly think this is how a wife should act?"She actually had the nerve to lecture me. A mistress claiming the moral high ground—what a joke!Shawn's dad, Paul Payne, rounded on me with the same self-righteous tone. "Look at how graceful and understanding Yvonne is! You can't even hold a candle to her. You're an absolute disgrace to the Payne family!"He paused, turning to Kieran with the smug

The moment Kieran stepped into view, the crowd parted instinctively. The smirks and whispers died instantly, replaced by looks of deference.Shawn was completely bewildered. He looked around the room, trying to locate the "Mrs. Luke" Kieran was talking about.Feigning composure, he stepped forward and extended his hand. "Welcome, Mr. Luke. Thank you for gracing my daughter's birthday party with your presence."Kieran completely ignored the outstretched hand. His face was a mask of cold fury, radiating a tension so suffocating that the entire room held its breath. Everyone knew Kieran's clout in Marovelle—he was a powerhouse, and nobody was stupid enough to make a sound when he was pissed.Kieran walked over to me and gently helped me up from the floor. His brow furrowed with heartache the moment he saw the vivid handprint burning across my cheek and the deep, bloody scratch on my neck."I'm so sorry, honey. I'm late," he murmured. His slender fingers lightly brushed the scratch o
