Chapter 1

I turned and walked out of that farce of an engagement party.

But a hand clamped around my wrist hard enough to bruise.

Klaus had hurried after me, clearly irritated.

"Haven't you made enough of a scene?"

He lowered his voice, looking tired.

"I already said I'd marry you. The timing just isn't right. What's the big rush?"

I yanked my hand free. "What's the problem? I stepped aside so you and Linda could be together. Isn't that exactly what you wanted?"

I'd loved him for ten years, and now I was about to be forced to marry the next head of a Mafia family and enter a cage I could never escape.

My mother, Elena Rota, had suffered the same fate. One of Europe's most gifted designers, she should have had a brilliant, independent life.

Then she married my father, the cold, vicious Don Rota. His affairs and the cruelty of his mistresses drove her into such deep depression that she took her own life in front of me.

I swore I would never end up like her.

I used to think Klaus was different from my father.

But now he was saying I was making a scene just to force him into marriage!

My cold response set off the anger he'd been holding back.

"I'm the one who kissed her. Linda had nothing to do with it!

"Why are you going after her? You're the one who brought her into the company. If you humiliate her in public like this, what are people going to think of her?

"You won't be happy until you've ruined her life, will you?"

I let out a cold laugh.

I'm going after her?

I'm ruining her?

I'd inherited both my parents' talent and built the luxury label Engrid from scratch. I had grown it to ten stores and turned Klaus, once penniless, into one of Paris's most sought-after fashion CEOs.

But once I'd helped him reach the top, he no longer wanted an equal. He wanted someone weaker, someone who would worship him.

So who's ruining whom?

I shoved him away and tried to leave, but he grabbed me again.

"Rebecca, I never said I wouldn't marry you.

"We squeezed into cheap apartments, lived on clearance groceries, and pulled more all-nighters than I can count. I remember all of it.

"I'm just asking you to give me some room to breathe."

He sighed, as if I were the one at fault.

"Is that why you kissed Linda and fast-tracked her into the design director role?" I was so angry I laughed.

Klaus frowned and opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, my phone rang.

It was my father.

"I hear the engagement fell apart?"

I paused for a few seconds. "Yes, Father."

"I'll send someone to bring you back to New York."

"No need. I can get there myself." The line went dead.

Klaus had overheard the call and tensed. "You didn't have to tell your father right now!"

Then when?

After my father watches you exchange vows with another woman?

I wanted so badly to ask.

But looking at his angry, defensive face, I suddenly didn't have the strength to fight.

I was leaving anyway. There was no point exhausting myself arguing over who was right.

"Yes. You're right." My voice was flat, my face still. "There won't be anything else to tell him."

  • He Kissed Her at Our Engagement, I Chose the Don's Heir   Chapter 9

Rebecca’s POVOnce that whole circus was over, my life moved forward, steady and calm.My new label took off on the international stage. The historic district redevelopment impressed the whole city, and the European fashion world embraced my designs. My team was professional and humble, and they respected my work.No more endless infighting, no more scheming behind my back, no more people who smiled to my face and stabbed me in the back.I no longer had to compromise for anyone or dull my edge.I'd earned my place through skill and won respect through talent. And I had Ian's unwavering love beside me.My days were easy and secure, a kind of peace I'd never known in my ten years in Paris. One afternoon, Lucy flew to New York to see me.A sea breeze drifted across the terrace. Coffee and dessert sat on the table, and the sun warmed our shoulders. We hadn't seen each other in a long time. I could tell she was happy to see how confident and radiant I'd become."This is wonderful, Rebecca.

Rebecca’s POVI asked Klaus to meet me at an old café on the historic waterfront.Ian wanted to come with me, but I reassured him. This was my past, and I needed to close the book on it myself. He didn't push. He just had his people stand guard at a distance.Klaus looked even worse than last time. He was so thin that a strong breeze could have knocked him over."Rebecca, you came. Does that mean..." Hope flared in his bloodshot eyes."Don't read anything into this," I said flatly. "I didn't come to get back together. I came to say what I need to say, once and for all."The hope drained from Klaus's face. "Rebecca, I know you hate me. I hate who I am right now too."He clenched his hands on the table. "You were always too brilliant. From the day we started with nothing, everyone said you were the one holding the company together. On paper, I was the CEO. Deep down, I never felt good enough."I became obsessed with surpassing you. I wanted everyone's respect. I needed to prove I wasn't

Rebecca’s POVOne afternoon a week later, I'd just finished a long meeting about a brand partnership when my phone lit up.It was Lucy."Rebecca, you won't believe the mess in Paris right now!"The evidence that Klaus embezzled company money checked out, and the PNF opened a case. The board fired him and is suing to recover every cent. Everything in his name has been frozen or seized. He lost it all overnight."And Linda's family business went bankrupt. The jewelry and apartment she got through Klaus were sold to cover the debts. Now the two of them are tearing each other apart in public. They've become a joke in Paris society, and no one in their circle wants anything to do with them."Lucy sighed. "They fell from the top all the way back to the bottom. They had it coming. And... I heard Klaus has been looking for you everywhere... Be careful."I listened in silence. The satisfaction I'd expected never came. All I felt was calm detachment. All the work I'd poured into those years and

Rebecca’s POVThe plane landed smoothly. After ten years away, I was finally back in the city where I belonged.New York didn't have that damp Parisian chill. Here, the wind felt crisp, and the whole city seemed charged with restless energy.A line of black cars waited outside arrivals. Men from the Rota family stood at attention on both sides. Two men waited at the front. One was my father, the current Don of the Rota family.Ian Castellano stood beside him.He was my father's godson. We'd grown up together in the Rota family.Ten years had taken away Ian's boyishness. He stood tall now, radiating quiet authority. He'd shielded me when the family council came after me and snuck me dinner whenever my father locked me in my room. We'd lost touch when I ran away from the family at 20.In those ten years, he'd become my father's most trusted right-hand man and the heir apparent to New York's underworld. My father studied me. His voice was as stern as ever, but I heard a hint of warmth in

Klaus’s POVAfter that, Klaus grew even more reckless. He didn't come home or go to the office for three straight days.He figured Rebecca would lose it and blow up his phone with calls and texts. But he didn't get a single call or message from her.At first, he felt relieved. Then an irritation he couldn't explain crept in.He tried calling the number he knew by heart. But all he got was a cold automated message. "The number you have dialed is not available."He tried texting her and realized she had blocked him.Anger smoldered in Klaus's chest. He assumed Rebecca was just throwing another tantrum.Just then, Linda walked over to the couch and settled into his lap like it was the most natural thing in the world. For the first time, he moved her off his lap.Linda froze. Her eyes filled at once with hurt and confusion. "Klaus?""Something came up at the office. I need to go in." Klaus pushed down his panic and brushed her off. "Wait for me here.""But Klaus, I..." Her voice turned ple

That afternoon, on my way back from the finance department, I spotted Carl hovering outside my office, looking frantic. The moment he saw me, he rushed over, his voice shaking. "Rebecca! Get to the showroom right now! Something's happened! Linda's tearing the place apart!"Anger surged through me.The moment I pushed the doors open, I found the room in ruins.Linda rose calmly, looking smug. "Klaus told me to clear all this out. This showroom is about to become my private office."Still talking, she lifted a delicate white veil out of one of the display cases."I hear this piece means a lot to you?"My mother had sewn it by hand. It held all the love and longing I still felt for her.A vicious look crossed Linda's face as she yanked the veil with both hands.Riiip.The white veil was torn to shreds, loose threads drifting across the floor. It felt like my heart had been ripped apart right along with it.I raised my hand to slap her as hard as I could.Just then, a figure hurtled toward
