Chapter 2

Auteur: Noorie
Harry finally saw the gravity of the situation. His face drained of color. He scrambled to his feet, pulling his car keys from his pocket.

"Okay, okay. Get him. I’ll pull the car around," he said, turning toward the garage.

Relief washed over me, so potent it almost made me dizzy. I bent down, cradling my limp son, whispering his name.

But just as Harry reached the back door, a sharp, childish cry ripped through the air.

"Daddy! Look! I’m a doctor!"

Jake, Claire’s son, stood proudly next to the bag where I kept Leo’s emergency kit. He held the orange, biohazard container of insulin vials. One of the needles was plunged into a vial, and another was stuck into his own leg. The floor was sticky with the broken glass of three more vials.

Harry stopped dead. His eyes darted from his unconscious son, Leo, to his mistress’s son, Jake, who was now crying in confusion.

Claire screamed in panic. "Jake! What did you do? Harry, look! He's hurt himself! He might have injected himself with something!" she shrieked, hysteria mounting.

Harry looked at me, then at the destroyed insulin, then back at the small, frightened child in Claire’s arms. The decision was instantaneous and brutal.

"I have to go," he said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.

Shock paralyzed me. "What? No, Harry," I whispered, holding my fading son tightly. "Leo is unconscious! He needs immediate glucose and an IV! You can’t leave!"

Harry met my eyes, a frantic, desperate look mixed with a terrible sort of resignation. "I'm sorry, Darcy. But... Jake doesn't know what he injected. It could be lethal. He's just a child. I have to take him to the emergency room right now."

"And Leo? Is he not a child? Not yours?" I choked out.

A moment of hesitation flickered through his eyes before his eyes darkened again as he said, "Leo will be fine, Darcy. Just give him correction and wait for me to come back. He will be alright."

And with that, he turned, scooped up Jake and Claire, and rushed out the door, the sound of the car engine roaring to life a moment later.

The black SUV sped down the driveway, leaving me kneeling on the grass, clutching my dying son, watching his other child and his other woman disappear in a cloud of dust.

He asked me to give correction to Leo, knowing quite well that his loving child, Jake, had already destroyed everything.

What was I supposed to do now? Wait for him to come back? Was he actually coming back for us or was it just another excuse?

"Leo," I begged, tears streaming down my face. "Please, hold on. Mama will save you." My hands trembled as I realized how less the weight my words carried at the moment.

I walked like a ghost as I grabbed my phone, booked a cab and rushed Leo to his regular hospital. The drive was a complete blur, with my hands holding Leo's firmly and whispering prayers.

My heart bled as the doctors took Leo into the emergency ward. Leo struggled for breath for a long time before the monitor finally became plane and the doctors looked at me with a pair of eyes, filled with sympathy and remorse.

"We are sorry. But—"

"No..." I cut them off, my legs shivering. I was not ready to face the harsh reality of my life. Leo, my son, he was all good a moment ago. He could not leave me.

"D-Do something, doctor. Please!" I cried, but I knew how silly it was. No one could bring Leo back. No one was going to call me Mamma again. No one.

I wept at the door of Leo's ward until my tears dried up, until my heart was hollowed out and I felt nothing. No remorse at all.

I walked inside. Leo lay on his sickbed, his eyes closed. I looked down at him, and for a split moment, I felt it was good he was gone. He would not have to suffer anymore.

He would not have to spend his life waiting for Harry just to look at him, the way he looked at Jake.

Harry never liked Leo, and he put no effort into hiding his disdain for him.

"Jake is fit and healthy, unlike you, sickly and weak."

"Jake praises all the cakes I bake for him, unlike you who has to feed sugar-free, ruining my recipe."

"I can't always check your sugar level in the trip. You stay at home. I'm taking Jake with me."

Every time, I watched my son shed silent tears from getting humiliated by his own father, my heart bled.

But, it wouldn't anymore. Leo was gone. For good. No one could hurt him anymore. Not even Harry.

"You will be happy watching our son like this, Harry," I whispered, stroking Leo's hair for the last time. "He will not irritate you anymore."

A week later Lucian accompanied Darcy in the courtroom to attend Harry's trial, to end everything for good.Lucian and Darcy sat in the front row. Lucian’s hand was a steady, warm weight over Darcy’s as the judge began to read the verdict."Harry Williams, for the attempted kidnapping of a minor, the illegal solicitation of private security for criminal intent, and the gross negligence resulting in the endangerment of life... this court sentences you to twenty-five years in a maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen."The gavel struck the wood like a thunderclap. As the officers moved to cuff him, Harry lunged toward the railing. He didn't look at the judge or his lawyer. He looked at Darcy."Darcy! Please!" he sobbed, the sound echoing off the high ceilings. "I was wrong. I was crazy with grief! I thought he was Leo... I just wanted my family back. Tell them to have mercy. For the sake of the years we spent together, Darcy, please!"Darcy stood

The next morning, Darcy stood in the private cemetery on the outskirts of the Thorne estate. Unlike the cold marble mausoleum Harry had desecrated in his madness, this grave was hidden beneath the weeping boughs of an ancient willow tree. The headstone was simple, white, and bore only one name: Leo.Darcy knelt on the damp earth, the hem of her silk dress disregarded. In her trembling hands, she held the the Lot 44 she had outbid a room full of millionaires to obtain. It was the last thing Leo had asked for before the world went dark."I promised I'd find it for you," she whispered, her voice catching as she placed the toy at the base of the stone. "You don't have to wait anymore, my sweet boy."A heavy, warm coat was draped over her shoulders. She didn't need to look up to know it was Lucian. Theo stood on her other side, his small hand resting on the headstone in a gesture of brotherhood that transcended the living and the dead."He knows, Darcy," Lucian said softly, his hand restin

"These are the DNA reports that proves Theo is my son." Lucian declared while throwing the DNA reports before Harry and the press.Harry picked the document in a haste and the reporters circulated him to see what was written in it."And, these are the evidence that shows Theo has been living with me in Thorne Mansion for seven years, never moving out of the country.""As for Leo, he lived with you for five years before you carelessly left him to die. Am I right, Williams?""There is no link between Leo and Theo except..." He paused as he walked closer to Darcy. Gently placing his hands over her waist, he added, "Darcy is the mother of both the children. They both belongs to her, but not you.""How is this even possible?" Harry chuckled, his eyes that were fixed on the evidence Lucian had just thrown before him shifted to Darcy's waist where laid Lucian's hands as if he owned her.He clenched the DNA reports in his hands and accused Darcy. "This is all bullshits! If Theo... is not my so

"I’ve already made the call, Darcy," Harry said, his voice eerily steady. "My men are at the cemetery. They have the equipment. If you won't give me the truth, I’ll dig it out of the ground myself.""You are desecrating a child’s resting place!" Darcy’s voice cracked, her composure finally splintering. She moved to lunged at him, but two security guards stepped forward, their shadows looming over her. "Harry, if you do this, there is no coming back. Not in this life or the next.""There was never a way back for us anyway," Harry countered. He turned the phone around, casting the live feed onto the giant projector screen used moments ago for the auction. The crowd watched in a horrified, hypnotic silence. Their interest shifted from the limited edition jewllery presented in the auction hall to the family drama of once so famous business tycoon, Harry Williams and his ex-wife who had charged him of medical negligence. They were curious to know who among them was speaking the truth and

The sound of the slap echoed through the Auction Hall. The crowd gasped, phones surfacing like shark fins to record the downfall of the woman who had been standing upright and arrogant just moments ago."Harry..." Claire gasped, clutching her burning cheek. "You... you hit me? For her?""I hit you for every disrespect you cause to Darcy," Harry snarled, his eyes fixed on Darcy, desperate to see a glimmer of approval. "Get out, Claire. I don't need you anymore. I’ve found my family, you’re less than the dirt on Darcy's shoes."He turned back to Darcy, his eyes seeking her approval. "See, Darcy? She’s nothing. I’ll ruin her. I’ll make sure she never shows her face to us again. Just come home. We can take Leo—""Stop." Darcy’s voice was sharp as blade. The boy, who had been watching the scene with a chillingly calm expression for a child, stepped forward and gripped Darcy’s hand."Harry, look at me," Darcy said, her emerald eyes burning with a cold fire. "You just humiliated the woman you

"Then who else is his son?" Harry barked, "Have you taken me as a fool that I would not recognize my own son?" Darcy's lips curled up into a smirk before she said, "Your last sentence just proved your first sentence was correct, Harry. You can't recognize your son. What right do you have to call my son yours?"Harry's hands clenched. He did not understand why Darcy was refusing to accept the truth when Leo was clearly standing before his eyes. He tried to calm himself down before he began, his voice softening, "Darcy, I know I have wronged you. I was such a jerk of a person and much bad of a Dad.""I get that you were mad at me that time but faking your own son's death and moving out with him, don't you think you have gone too far in your vengeance?""I almost believed I had killed Leo.""I spent the whole year crying before the grave I thought belonged to Leo." "All these months, I never contacted Claire, neither did I meet her son. My life, it was dedicated to finding you." "Now
