Chapter 5

Penulis: Sweetie Moore
Before long, the audio was filled with the sound of their giggling and flirting.

I took off my headphones with a cold smile, pulled out my phone, and immediately reported Robert's company to the authorities for patent infringement.

The agent informed me that processing the claim would take a bit of time.

I locked my phone.

"Just you wait, Robert. I'm taking back everything you owed me in my last life in this one," I thought to myself.

By the time I walked back to my desk, Robert and Ellie had already left for the day.

Instead of throwing myself into my work like I usually did, I spent the rest of the afternoon slacking off.

After work, I caught a cab back home and started packing my things. It was time to move out and cut ties with Robert for good.

I didn't have much, so it went quickly. Despite living there for seven years, my clothes didn't even fill a single suitcase.

After I finished packing up, I was about to rest when my phone buzzed.

I unlocked it to see that Ellie had posted an update on Instagram—customized to be visible only to me.

The post showed a fresh marriage certificate next to her brand-new necklace.

In one of the photos, her fingers were tightly intertwined with a hand I knew all too well—Robert's.

I knew Ellie was trying to provoke me.

In my last life, this would have driven me mad with jealousy. But now, I simply liked the post and left a comment. "Congratulations! Wishing you both a lifetime together."

I meant it. Now that they were legally bound, neither of them would be able to escape the fallout when the company went under.

Robert didn't come home that night. For the first time in ages, I slept like a baby.

The next morning, I got up early, eager to head to the office and watch the drama unfold.

But when I arrived, the facial recognition scanner at the entrance rejected my scan.

Right on cue, Ellie swaggered out, crossing her arms with a smug smirk. "Oh, Melanie, didn't you hear? You've been fired.

"It's a shame, really. Your new product line launches today. You'd have made a fortune in bonuses, and your net worth would've skyrocketed. Too bad none of that has anything to do with you anymore. Sucks to be you!"

A moment later, Robert walked out to join her.

"You fired me?" I asked.

He met my gaze with total indifference. "Yes. But it was the shareholders' decision.

"Your toxic attitude toward your coworkers has been causing too much disruption. The shareholders insisted on letting you go, and I had to vote with the majority. You're no longer an employee here, Melanie. You should leave."

Talk about burning the bridge after crossing it.

Yet, far from being angry, I actually smiled.

Ellie looked at me like I had lost my mind. "What are you smiling at?"

My smile widened. "Oh, just enjoying the irony of your impending doom."

Early this morning, my infringement report had been officially processed, and news of Schmidt Corp's patent violation was already trending online.

I was just about to break the news to them when a swarm of reporters suddenly crowded the entrance of the building.

Robert assumed the reporters were there to interview them and smiled, saying, "Wow, you guys are incredibly well-informed! We were just getting ready for our new product launch event, but it looks like you caught wind of it early!"

Ellie was practically glowing with arrogance as she threw a haughty glance my way. "So what if you designed this product, Melanie? I'm the one in charge now. The bonuses and the glory belong entirely to me. You must be absolutely dying inside. Now move aside. Don't block my camera angle!"

Ellie shoved past me, joining Robert in front of the flashing cameras. Both of them were ready to deliver a grand speech about their upcoming release.

But the very next second, a reporter thrust a microphone forward and asked, "Mr. Schmidt, what is your comment on the allegations that your company has committed major patent infringement?"

The video showed exactly how Robert had cornered and threatened me, proving that the entire stabbing incident was a self-inflicted hoax and I had nothing to do with it.The moment the clip ended, public opinion flipped on a dime. The neighbors who had just been backing him up instantly turned on him."So you were a cheating scumbag all along? You were unfaithful first, and after being dumped, you kept harassing your ex-wife. When she refused to get back together, you started defaming her? How can someone be so heartless!""Disgusting piece of trash. You got exactly what you deserved!"Robert's face morphed into a horrific shade of red. While he was still paralyzed with shock, I turned to the police officers to make my complaint. "Officers, I want to press charges against Robert for false accusations and defamation. On top of that, I'm also suing him for outstanding debts. Here is the court summons."I handed the legal paperwork right to the officers, backing up every word.In th

Noticing my absolute resolve, Robert gritted his teeth and sent the payment. A flash of pure malice darted through his eyes as he muttered under his breath, "You forced my hand, Melanie."A sudden wave of unease washed over me, and I wanted nothing more than to get out of this place immediately. But before I could even reach the door, Robert grabbed a knife from the counter and slashed it violently across his forearm. In an instant, flesh tore open, and blood began pouring down his arm. Before I could even process what he was doing, he bolted out the front door while screaming, "Help! She's trying to kill me!"His desperate cries immediately brought the neighbors crowding into the hallway, throwing bewildered glances our way.A well-meaning neighbor called out, "Robert, what happened?"Robert instantly squeezed out a couple of tears, spinning a wild web of lies on the spot. "It's my ex-wife! She has mental issues. She's always paranoid, constantly accusing me of cheating on her

Still, Robert tried to argue. "Mel, the divorce agreement was just for show. It doesn't count."I scoffed. "Whether it counts or not isn't up to you. Legally speaking, it absolutely counts. We're over. Besides, you registered your marriage with Ellie the same day we split, and now you're trying to play the devoted husband? Don't you think that's pathetic?"Robert choked back a sob. When he spoke again, his voice was raw and broken. "Mel, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry! I finally realized that you were the only one who truly cared about me. Let's remarry, please?"I saw right through him. "You mean I was the easiest to fool, right? The only reason you're crawling back is that Ellie dumped you, and you need me to clean up your mess again. But sorry, I'm not in the business of recycling trash."With that, I hung up, blocked his number, and deleted his contact.I figured that would finally make him back off, but he just wouldn't give up.A few days later, Robert contacted me from a diff

"Melanie, why do you have to blow this out of proportion? What will you gain from this?" Robert hissed. "Don't forget, you're in charge of the project. If the company goes down, you go down with it."I responded with a detached smile, saying, "Did you forget, Robert? You had me hand all my accounts over to Ellie yesterday. The only one going down with you now is her. Not me."Realizing he had lost the argument, Robert grabbed Ellie and retreated into the building. The moment they stepped inside, the shareholders swarmed Robert, tearing into him without mercy."Look at the disaster you've caused, Robert Schmidt!""We never should have made you CEO. What a massive mistake!""Our investment is completely down the drain, and you're going to take full responsibility for this!"Once the shareholders left, Robert unleashed his fury straight onto Ellie. He raised his hand and delivered a sharp backhand across her face. "This is all your fault! Who told you to go bragging in front of Mel

It looked like Robert wouldn't admit defeat until he was staring into his own grave.Fine. Since he didn't care about his dignity, I had no reason to spare it.I spoke coldly. "The company was never bankrupt. You faked it just to divorce me and give Ellie a legitimate status."At that, Robert's face turned visibly pale, and he stared at me in sheer disbelief. "H-How do you…"Sensing a massive scandal, the reporters immediately started snapping photos furiously. My coworkers crowded around the entrance to watch the spectacle, their faces a mix of shock and confusion as whispers broke out."Holy crap! Who would've thought Melanie, the one Mr. Schmidt always targeted, was actually his wife?""Right? I thought Mr. Schmidt and Ms. Gordon were the couple here!""Wait, if that's true… doesn't that make Ms. Gordon a homewrecker?"Hearing the gossip, Ellie flushed with humiliation and shot me a venomous look. Then, right on cue, her eyes welled up with tears, and she put on a helpless

Ellie looked from Zayn to me and back again, finally arriving at a wild conclusion. "Robert, I bet Melanie has bought off Mr. Eaton. That's the only reason he's taking her side!"Upon hearing that, Robert shot Zayne a murderous glare.Finding his integrity suddenly called into question, Zayne lost his temper too. "Mr. Schmidt, Ms. Gordon, you're not only questioning my professional competence. You're also insulting my character!"But in Ellie's eyes, his defensiveness was just a sign of guilt. Emboldened, she pressed further, "If she didn't buy you off, why are you defending her? Oh, I get it! What Melanie showed you just now was the receipt for your bribe, wasn't it?"Zayne's face turned beet red with rage. He had intended to spare Robert and Schmidt Corp any embarrassment, but now he marched right up to the cameras."I'm sorry to disappoint you," he said coldly. "But what Ms. Reid showed me wasn't a receipt. It was a confirmation screenshot of her approved patent registration.
