Chapter 3

Author: Noorie
The next day, the leaders of the syndicate were gathered in Nikolai’s estate to wait for the Mafia heads to declare their territories because none of them were allowed to attend the meeting.

Conversation faltered, then died down to a sharp whisper as Nikolai stepped through the grand archway.

He looked every bit the rising supreme leader—tailored charcoal suit, silver cufflinks glinting under the lights, and an unmistakable aura of ruthless confidence.

But it wasn't Nikolai alone that had every head turning. Gliding beside him on his arm was Steffy. She looked breathtaking in the emerald-green, backless silk gown I had selected for her the night before.

Murmurs rippled through the room like wildfire.

"Wait... where is Maria?" Capo Vane muttered, swirling his scotch while staring at the pair. "Since when does Nikolai walk into a High Council meeting with a club manager?"

"Is there anything wrong between Maria and him?" another syndicate elder chimed in, leaning across the table. "For five years, Maria was the only one allowed at his right hand. Everyone in the city knew they were practically dynamic partners... we all assumed she'd be taking the crown as his Donna once the council unified."

"They were supposed to get married eventually, weren't they?" a female boss whispered softly. "She built his logistics network. To replace her with a girl from the private club..."

Nikolai heard the whispers. He always did.

Stopping in the center of the vault floor, he rested a hand possessively over Steffy’s waist, drawing her flush against his side. A cold, dismissive smirk played on his lips as his gaze swept across the gathered leaders, shutting down the room's mounting curiosity with sheer disdain.

"Let me clear up any delusion floating around this council." He swirled the bourbon in his crystal glass, chuckling dryly.

"Maria?" Nikolai scoffed, his tone dripping with patronizing arrogance. "She was never my partner, nor will she ever wear my ring. Our families are close, and she is like a sister to me who kept clinging to me. Nothing more."

Nikolai tightened his grip on Steffy’s waist, raising his glass in a grand gesture. "Moving forward, if you wish to speak to my inner circle, you go through her. Address her properly. Steffy is my Donna now."

Just then his gaze met mine. A flicker of something like hesitation crossed his eyes before they relaxed, like it was nothing.

He felt no remorse for degrading me in public, and for what? Just to chase a new girl?

Even if I had decided to cut all ties with him, his ruthless words still ached my heart.

Later in the evening, as the council dispersed into private lounges, Steffy found me standing on the balcony overlooking the grand skyline.

"Maria..." Steffy started softly, biting her lip. "I... I overheard the leaders talking earlier. I didn't realize... I didn't know you and Nikolai used to date. If I had known there was history between you two—"

“There is no history between us…” I cut her off. “We have never dated before. Those are senseless rumors.”

It was never made public. My existence only belonged to his apartment, at night whenever he felt horny. That's it.

Could it even be considered dating?

By now, several curious syndicate leaders who had drifted toward the terrace overheard the exchange and paused near the glass doors, watching intently.

"So you really don't care about him anymore?" Capo Vane asked, stepping out onto the terrace with an intrigued grin. "Word travels fast, Maria. If you're not pining over Nikolai, does that mean the harbor's brightest strategist is officially single?"

"I didn't say I was available," I smiled softly. "I just said I don't care about him."

"Then who is it?" Steffy asked, caught off guard by my absolute composure. "Who could possibly pull your attention away from the man running the syndicate?"

I didn't answer right away. I turned back to the balcony and casually lifted my finger, pointing across the rain-slicked city bay toward the glowing skyline.

Every eye on the balcony followed the direction of my hand, even mine.

Directly across the harbor, towering above the surrounding skyscrapers, was a massive, glowing digital billboard illuminating the night sky. The high-definition screen flashed a striking portrait of a man with razor-sharp features, cold, piercing eyes, and an aura of absolute dominance—framed by the crest of the rival syndicate.

Julian Vance.

Nikolai’s arch-nemesis. The brutal, untouchable kingpin who controlled the northern territories and had spent the last decade tearing Nikolai's trade routes to shreds.

Underneath Julian’s commanding portrait, the billboard flashed a single, high-profile headline announcing his return to the city tonight.

The balcony went dead silent.

Steffy gasped, her breath catching in her throat, while the syndicate capos stared in utter disbelief.

"If I'm going to back a King," I murmured softly, tossing my empty champagne glass into the trash can, "it certainly won't be a boy playing dress-up in his father's vault.”

Julian held my hand as we walked past Nikolai, bleeding all over his mouth. Julian had already cleared the security perimeter; his palm was warm, his grip steady and unyielding."You don't have to look back anymore," Julian said softly as he brought my hand to his lips, kissing the inside of my wrist—where Nikolai's violent grip had left a faint mark that was already fading. "Every single piece of his power, his territory, and his connections... I will wipe them clean before he gets up from his sickbed."I let out a long breath, feeling the last lingering knot in my chest finally unwind. "He thought he could hold me hostage with memories. But he never understood what real strength was.""He never understood you," Julian corrected gently, his eyes filled with absolute warmth. "And now, he never will."He fulfilled his promise! Two weeks later, across the city, in the dimly lit basement of a defunct warehouse, Nikolai’s world was crumbling in real time."What do you mean the accounts ar

I rested and recovered at Julian’s place for weeks. On the day I healed, he took me to an opera show, something I forgot I liked before just because Nikolai thought it was boring.Just as we were coming out, talking about the lead actress, a violent gust of wind surged right toward us.Nikolai practically slammed into Julian, grabbing my wrist with a force so intense it made my recently healed wrist ache. His other hand swung out in a fist, aiming straight for Julian's face."Julian Vance! There's an unsaid rule in the underworld. We don't even touch our rival’s woman, and Maria is mine!"Julian tilted his head to dodge the blow and raised his arm to block. He looked at Nikolai, his voice low and heavy:"As far as I know, the woman who belongs to you is Steffy Miller; you announced her as your Donna. I never heard anyone calling Maria your Donna before.""You don't know shit!" Nikolai roared, his eyes bloodshot."Maria is mine! Do you really think she likes you? She's just using you to

Maria's POVI was told I could be discharged now. I tried to get up to grab my phone– to book a cab. But Julian grabbed my hands mid-turn, whispering in a low voice. “You said you would give me a chance. Now, allow me to take care of you, Maria.” I pressed my lips.“Go on…” I said, curious to see how ever-so-distant mafia Lord acts as someone's boyfriend. I bet he would be fed up with taking care of an injured woman within twenty hours. He brought me to his private estate. Not just me, but a whole team of specialist doctors to stay within close range in case I needed medical help at any second. The chefs in his villa were told to learn my preferences. The decorative flowers were changed from lavender to lily. I remembered I had mentioned I like lilies in one of my interviews recently, giving a hint to Nikolai to bring me a bouquet. He never brought one. Instead, Julian built a whole sanctuary of them.He didn't trust any nurse doing the dressing of my wounds, afraid they might hurt me

Maria was injured. She had called him for help—four times—and he had let Steffy cut the connection while she bled on the street. And now, his greatest, most lethal enemy had picked up his scattered pieces. The realization hit him like a physical blow."Get the cars," Nikolai barked, tossing the lieutenant aside as he grabbed his heavy tactical coat and tore a loaded firearm from his desk drawer."Nikolai, you can't leave me here!" Steffy shrieked behind him, running toward the door with tears of anger spilling down her cheeks. "The elders are waiting! What about the syndicate?!"Nikolai stopped at the threshold, turning his head just enough to glare at her with a look of absolute, soul-crushing disgust."If so much as a single scratch stays on Maria's skin," Nikolai said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "I will personally tear down everything I built—starting with you."Without looking back, he charged down the corridor, his heavy boots echoing through the estate as he rushed into the pou

Third person POVMiles away, Nikolai sat at the head of the dark mahogany table, a heavy tumbler of crystal bourbon resting untouched between his fingers. Surrounding him, senior capos and syndicate elders were laughing, tossing back cigars, and offering endless toasts to Steffy, who sat proudly on his arm, beaming in her silk gown."To the new Donna!" Capo Vane boomed, raising his glass high. "A fresh light for the eastern territory!"The room erupted in applause, but Nikolai barely heard them. His eyes were fixed on the empty leather armchair at the far end of the long table—the seat where Maria had sat through every strategy council for the last five years.Usually, her soft, steady voice would be dissecting harbor revenues or mapping tactical routes, her sharp intellect effortlessly keeping the ruthless men in line. But the playful movements of her legs beneath the table would turn Nikolai on and drive him to call an end to the day, only to take her to his private sanctuary.Tonigh

I forced my heavy eyelids open, the blinding fluorescence of the medical vault stinging my eyes. The tall silhouette towering beside my steel gurney stepped into the light. Cold, razor-sharp features, dark hair brushed back impeccably, and a pair of piercing, smoke-gray eyes that could freeze a man where he stood.Julian Vance. The undisputed kingpin of the northern territories—and Nikolai’s greatest, most lethal rival.I froze, my breath catching in my throat as my fingers instinctively reached for a blade that was no longer at my hip. "Julian?" My voice was raspy, laced with disbelief. "What... what are you doing in a private Richard family medical hideout?"Julian pulled up a sleek leather chair, turning it around to sit casually, resting his large, scarred hands over the top. A faint, razor-thin smirk played on his lips."Your blood leaves a very distinct trail on cobblestones, Maria," Julian murmured, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the sterile room. "And when my scouts r
