Chapter 4

Author: Noorie
The next day, I spent two hours stripping the primary suite down to bare concrete. Every silk dress, every piece of jewelry, and every ledger page detailing the shipping accounts I had built for him were packed into two scarred leather trunks. When I finished, the room held all the warmth of a freshly dug grave.

Dragging the trunks toward the private elevator, the doors slid open with a soft hiss, revealing Nikolai.

His eyes swept over the heavy luggage, an impatient, darkened edge settling over his sharp features.

"Maria," he said, his voice quiet, low, and dangerously controlled. "What is this?"

"I'm clearing out," I replied, my tone flat. "It’s not good for relationship morale if your Donna sees a ghost wandering your floor."

He took a step forward, his boot heavy against the marble floor, and slammed his palm down onto the handle of my lead trunk, pinning it in place.

"There are no 'Donna' on this floor," he growled. "This is our sanctuary. I told you—no matter which women I see, no one steps foot in this penthouse."

I let out a faint, humorless breath, ignoring his pathetic attempt at reassurance, and tried to move past him.

His fingers clamped around my wrist like an iron cuff.

"Maria." His voice dropped, thick with rising irritation. "Stop playing these games. Aren't we separated, okay? It’s just a little distraction. We’re simply allowing each other to see other people as well."

I stopped and slowly turned my head to meet his eyes. Save the diplomatic doublespeak for the council, Nikolai," I said coldly. "Unlike your new Donna, I lack the talent to understand your diplomacy, and I certainly do not understand your arrangements. For me, it's over."

His jaw tightened, a bitter smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as if I had just uttered something absurdly naive.

"Don't understand it?" He took a slow step toward me, leaning down until his dark hair brushed my temple, his breath smelling faintly of fine smoke and bourbon. "Then what about chasing Julian Vance?"

I held my ground, unblinking.

"Word travels fast, Maria," he whispered mockingly. "The rumor that you were interested in Julian Vance reached my desk two hours ago."

I paused for a fraction of a second, then looked him dead in the eye. "And what if I did?"

A low laugh vibrated in his chest.

"You're out of your mind," he sneered, straightening up and watching me like a predator observing a bird fluttering toward a trap. "You think using Julian’s name will make me panic and stop me from dating Steffy? Who in this city doesn't know that Julian has loathed your bloodline since we were kids?"

He stepped closer, his tone turning into a patronizing warning. "Did you forget the treaty map your father sent his family fifteen years ago—the one he personally shredded and mailed back soaked in gasoline? He despises your family name."

"That," I said softly, "is between Julian and me."

"He isn't a pawn you can play with, Maria," he warned, his eyes narrowing into slits. "He’s a monster who executes people for minor breaches of etiquette. Don't light a match just to see if you can handle the fire."

I grabbed the handles of my trunks and pushed past him.

He didn't grab me this time. He just stood in the arched doorway, his dark, vicious words echoing down the cold marble hallway after me.

"Do you really think Julian Vance would ever give you a seat at his table?" He called out, his voice dripping with cruel confidence. "Everyone in the underworld knows you've spent the last years bleeding yourself dry to build my empire, his only existing rival."

“Besides, his informants are everywhere. The fact that I have been ruining you since the time you came out of your age would have reached his ears long ago.” He sneered, “He must know there is nothing ‘fresh’ about you, Maria. And a man like him will never accept a second-hand thing.”

The temperature in the hallway plunged to absolute zero.

My blood roared in my ears for a single, blinding second before settling into a terrifying, icy stillness. Nikolai knew every weakness I possessed—he knew how hard I had fought to earn respect in a world dominated by ruthless men, and he had used that exact blade to carve away my dignity.

I turned around slowly.

I walked right back up to his smirking, arrogant face, pulled back my hand, and drove my open palm across his cheek with every ounce of force left in my body.

CRACK.

Silence stretched across the hallway, thick and suffocating.

Nikolai stayed frozen for several long seconds. Slowly, he brought his head back up. His eyes turned pitch black, dangerous and devoid of any lingering affection.

"You always did have too much pride for your own good," he murmured through gritted teeth, his voice laced with venom. "Remember this moment, Maria. In this business, nobody gets a second chance to sit at the high table."

"I don't need a second chance," I replied, my voice disturbingly calm as I grabbed my trunks and stepped into the elevator. "I'm taking the whole table.”

Julian held my hand as we walked past Nikolai, bleeding all over his mouth. Julian had already cleared the security perimeter; his palm was warm, his grip steady and unyielding."You don't have to look back anymore," Julian said softly as he brought my hand to his lips, kissing the inside of my wrist—where Nikolai's violent grip had left a faint mark that was already fading. "Every single piece of his power, his territory, and his connections... I will wipe them clean before he gets up from his sickbed."I let out a long breath, feeling the last lingering knot in my chest finally unwind. "He thought he could hold me hostage with memories. But he never understood what real strength was.""He never understood you," Julian corrected gently, his eyes filled with absolute warmth. "And now, he never will."He fulfilled his promise! Two weeks later, across the city, in the dimly lit basement of a defunct warehouse, Nikolai’s world was crumbling in real time."What do you mean the accounts ar

I rested and recovered at Julian’s place for weeks. On the day I healed, he took me to an opera show, something I forgot I liked before just because Nikolai thought it was boring.Just as we were coming out, talking about the lead actress, a violent gust of wind surged right toward us.Nikolai practically slammed into Julian, grabbing my wrist with a force so intense it made my recently healed wrist ache. His other hand swung out in a fist, aiming straight for Julian's face."Julian Vance! There's an unsaid rule in the underworld. We don't even touch our rival’s woman, and Maria is mine!"Julian tilted his head to dodge the blow and raised his arm to block. He looked at Nikolai, his voice low and heavy:"As far as I know, the woman who belongs to you is Steffy Miller; you announced her as your Donna. I never heard anyone calling Maria your Donna before.""You don't know shit!" Nikolai roared, his eyes bloodshot."Maria is mine! Do you really think she likes you? She's just using you to

Maria's POVI was told I could be discharged now. I tried to get up to grab my phone– to book a cab. But Julian grabbed my hands mid-turn, whispering in a low voice. “You said you would give me a chance. Now, allow me to take care of you, Maria.” I pressed my lips.“Go on…” I said, curious to see how ever-so-distant mafia Lord acts as someone's boyfriend. I bet he would be fed up with taking care of an injured woman within twenty hours. He brought me to his private estate. Not just me, but a whole team of specialist doctors to stay within close range in case I needed medical help at any second. The chefs in his villa were told to learn my preferences. The decorative flowers were changed from lavender to lily. I remembered I had mentioned I like lilies in one of my interviews recently, giving a hint to Nikolai to bring me a bouquet. He never brought one. Instead, Julian built a whole sanctuary of them.He didn't trust any nurse doing the dressing of my wounds, afraid they might hurt me

Maria was injured. She had called him for help—four times—and he had let Steffy cut the connection while she bled on the street. And now, his greatest, most lethal enemy had picked up his scattered pieces. The realization hit him like a physical blow."Get the cars," Nikolai barked, tossing the lieutenant aside as he grabbed his heavy tactical coat and tore a loaded firearm from his desk drawer."Nikolai, you can't leave me here!" Steffy shrieked behind him, running toward the door with tears of anger spilling down her cheeks. "The elders are waiting! What about the syndicate?!"Nikolai stopped at the threshold, turning his head just enough to glare at her with a look of absolute, soul-crushing disgust."If so much as a single scratch stays on Maria's skin," Nikolai said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "I will personally tear down everything I built—starting with you."Without looking back, he charged down the corridor, his heavy boots echoing through the estate as he rushed into the pou

Third person POVMiles away, Nikolai sat at the head of the dark mahogany table, a heavy tumbler of crystal bourbon resting untouched between his fingers. Surrounding him, senior capos and syndicate elders were laughing, tossing back cigars, and offering endless toasts to Steffy, who sat proudly on his arm, beaming in her silk gown."To the new Donna!" Capo Vane boomed, raising his glass high. "A fresh light for the eastern territory!"The room erupted in applause, but Nikolai barely heard them. His eyes were fixed on the empty leather armchair at the far end of the long table—the seat where Maria had sat through every strategy council for the last five years.Usually, her soft, steady voice would be dissecting harbor revenues or mapping tactical routes, her sharp intellect effortlessly keeping the ruthless men in line. But the playful movements of her legs beneath the table would turn Nikolai on and drive him to call an end to the day, only to take her to his private sanctuary.Tonigh

I forced my heavy eyelids open, the blinding fluorescence of the medical vault stinging my eyes. The tall silhouette towering beside my steel gurney stepped into the light. Cold, razor-sharp features, dark hair brushed back impeccably, and a pair of piercing, smoke-gray eyes that could freeze a man where he stood.Julian Vance. The undisputed kingpin of the northern territories—and Nikolai’s greatest, most lethal rival.I froze, my breath catching in my throat as my fingers instinctively reached for a blade that was no longer at my hip. "Julian?" My voice was raspy, laced with disbelief. "What... what are you doing in a private Richard family medical hideout?"Julian pulled up a sleek leather chair, turning it around to sit casually, resting his large, scarred hands over the top. A faint, razor-thin smirk played on his lips."Your blood leaves a very distinct trail on cobblestones, Maria," Julian murmured, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the sterile room. "And when my scouts r
