Chapter 5

Author: Noorie
Without glancing back, I slammed the iron door of my private quarters, loaded my essential clearance keys into my briefcase, and walked out of Nikolai’s territory without looking back once.

I systematically wiped his existence from my personal life, burned our shared channels, and purged five years of tactical logs.

Every custom piece of armor, rare blade, and signet ring he had given me was sealed inside an iron contraband box and dropped directly onto the steps of his family’s inner sanctum.

From that night on, I wiped my hands clean of his bloodline.

I thought our paths would remain permanently severed.

Yet as fate would have it, Steffy, my club manager, was his new and first-ever announced Donna now.

She would always bring him up during executive briefings—gushing about his ruthless brilliance, his tactical mind, and how fiercely protective he was over those under his wing.

Nikolai certainly knew how to please a woman. When a woman held value in his eyes, he would wrap her in absolute luxury and untouchable authority.

It was just that his protection, for me, had expired.

One day the syndicate convened for the Annual Oath Ceremony—a solemn night where family heads gathered at the grand cathedral to swear fealty and divide territory.

It was an ironclad tradition that senior capos brought their official partners to stand beside them at the altar during the blood oath to represent loyalty.

In five whole years, Nikolai had never once allowed me to stand beside him at the altar, always claiming my safety was too precious to risk in a room filled with rival hitmen.

I tried to excuse myself from attending, using a major supply-chain audit as my cover.

But Steffy walked into my glass office, leaning casually against my desk with a smug smile. "You can't miss the Oath Ceremony, Maria. Besides, Nikolai said his personal security detail can escort you home once the treaty is signed."

I was forced to sit in the high-tier gallery above the cathedral floor.

Throughout the entire ritual, Nikolai didn't look up at my balcony once.

When it came time for the blood oath, he led Steffy down the marble aisle himself. In front of all thirty syndicate leaders, he dipped his blade, cut his hand alongside hers, and sealed her status as his newly anointed Donna.

When a drop of stray blood brushed against her cheek, he reached out and wiped it away with his tongue—a gesture so tender it made the surrounding elders murmur in surprise.

I sat in the shadows of the gallery, quietly signing off on transaction logs on my tablet—one line after another, my expression totally blank.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nikolai’s jaw clench tight. His dark eyes darted up toward my quiet balcony, his complexion turning thunderous.

He was clearly unsettled because my total, icy composure robbed him of the reaction he wanted.

When the ceremony concluded, the family heads dispersed to their guarded motorcades.

Standing out on the cathedral steps under the heavy rain, I was the only high-ranking member without an armed escort.

Nikolai stepped out under a black umbrella, pausing briefly with a stiff, unnatural edge in his voice:

"...My armored transport is heading north. Do you need a ride?"

He assumed I was still bound to him by old habits—that after five years of devotion, a single crumb-of-comfort gesture would make me run back to his side.

Before I could answer, Steffy reached out and draped her coat over his shoulder, leaning close.

"Nikolai, the syndicate elders want me to toast them. I’m already drunk... Can you help me out?”

I pulled up the corners of my mouth into a cold, indifferent smile:

"Save your seat. My transport is already handled."

Nikolai’s gaze turned deadly cold.

"Suit yourself."

He turned on his heel, guided Steffy into his heavily guarded convoy, and vanished into the stormy night.

I stood on the wet stone steps as the freezing rain soaked my coat, my head throbbing with a dull, heavy ache.

I walked down the narrow side street toward my family’s private garage.

Just as I turned into a darkened alleyway, two men in tactical gear lunged out from the shadows.

I managed to draw my blade and strike one, but the second slammed me viciously against the damp brick wall, disarming me and leaving a gashing wound along my ribs before my counter-strike forced them to retreat into the fog.

Bleeding onto the cobblestones, my fingers acted instinctively—I pressed the hard-coded emergency beacon on my comm device.

It pinged four times.

On the fifth ping, the signal was abruptly terminated.

That priority frequency belonged to Nikolai.

The man who used to trigger a total lockdown of the city whenever my heart rate monitor spiked was never going to answer again.

I didn't shed a tear. I didn't ping him twice.

Forcing myself upright, I bandaged my side with a strip of silk from my dress and keyed the private code for the underground medical vault.

At the hidden clinic beneath the city, the medic stitched my wound and hooked me up to an IV drip.

I lay back on the steel gurney, staring up at the flickering overhead light.

Suddenly, the heavy vault door hissed open.

A towering figure stepped into the stark white room, his massive frame blocking the harsh light from the corridor.

Recognizing the dark tailored suit and the silver signet ring on his hand, my heart skipped a beat.

"Maria Richard," he murmured, his deep voice cutting through the silence like a drawn blade. "Is this really how the most brilliant strategist in the underworld allows herself to be treated?”

Julian held my hand as we walked past Nikolai, bleeding all over his mouth. Julian had already cleared the security perimeter; his palm was warm, his grip steady and unyielding."You don't have to look back anymore," Julian said softly as he brought my hand to his lips, kissing the inside of my wrist—where Nikolai's violent grip had left a faint mark that was already fading. "Every single piece of his power, his territory, and his connections... I will wipe them clean before he gets up from his sickbed."I let out a long breath, feeling the last lingering knot in my chest finally unwind. "He thought he could hold me hostage with memories. But he never understood what real strength was.""He never understood you," Julian corrected gently, his eyes filled with absolute warmth. "And now, he never will."He fulfilled his promise! Two weeks later, across the city, in the dimly lit basement of a defunct warehouse, Nikolai’s world was crumbling in real time."What do you mean the accounts ar

I rested and recovered at Julian’s place for weeks. On the day I healed, he took me to an opera show, something I forgot I liked before just because Nikolai thought it was boring.Just as we were coming out, talking about the lead actress, a violent gust of wind surged right toward us.Nikolai practically slammed into Julian, grabbing my wrist with a force so intense it made my recently healed wrist ache. His other hand swung out in a fist, aiming straight for Julian's face."Julian Vance! There's an unsaid rule in the underworld. We don't even touch our rival’s woman, and Maria is mine!"Julian tilted his head to dodge the blow and raised his arm to block. He looked at Nikolai, his voice low and heavy:"As far as I know, the woman who belongs to you is Steffy Miller; you announced her as your Donna. I never heard anyone calling Maria your Donna before.""You don't know shit!" Nikolai roared, his eyes bloodshot."Maria is mine! Do you really think she likes you? She's just using you to

Maria's POVI was told I could be discharged now. I tried to get up to grab my phone– to book a cab. But Julian grabbed my hands mid-turn, whispering in a low voice. “You said you would give me a chance. Now, allow me to take care of you, Maria.” I pressed my lips.“Go on…” I said, curious to see how ever-so-distant mafia Lord acts as someone's boyfriend. I bet he would be fed up with taking care of an injured woman within twenty hours. He brought me to his private estate. Not just me, but a whole team of specialist doctors to stay within close range in case I needed medical help at any second. The chefs in his villa were told to learn my preferences. The decorative flowers were changed from lavender to lily. I remembered I had mentioned I like lilies in one of my interviews recently, giving a hint to Nikolai to bring me a bouquet. He never brought one. Instead, Julian built a whole sanctuary of them.He didn't trust any nurse doing the dressing of my wounds, afraid they might hurt me

Maria was injured. She had called him for help—four times—and he had let Steffy cut the connection while she bled on the street. And now, his greatest, most lethal enemy had picked up his scattered pieces. The realization hit him like a physical blow."Get the cars," Nikolai barked, tossing the lieutenant aside as he grabbed his heavy tactical coat and tore a loaded firearm from his desk drawer."Nikolai, you can't leave me here!" Steffy shrieked behind him, running toward the door with tears of anger spilling down her cheeks. "The elders are waiting! What about the syndicate?!"Nikolai stopped at the threshold, turning his head just enough to glare at her with a look of absolute, soul-crushing disgust."If so much as a single scratch stays on Maria's skin," Nikolai said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "I will personally tear down everything I built—starting with you."Without looking back, he charged down the corridor, his heavy boots echoing through the estate as he rushed into the pou

Third person POVMiles away, Nikolai sat at the head of the dark mahogany table, a heavy tumbler of crystal bourbon resting untouched between his fingers. Surrounding him, senior capos and syndicate elders were laughing, tossing back cigars, and offering endless toasts to Steffy, who sat proudly on his arm, beaming in her silk gown."To the new Donna!" Capo Vane boomed, raising his glass high. "A fresh light for the eastern territory!"The room erupted in applause, but Nikolai barely heard them. His eyes were fixed on the empty leather armchair at the far end of the long table—the seat where Maria had sat through every strategy council for the last five years.Usually, her soft, steady voice would be dissecting harbor revenues or mapping tactical routes, her sharp intellect effortlessly keeping the ruthless men in line. But the playful movements of her legs beneath the table would turn Nikolai on and drive him to call an end to the day, only to take her to his private sanctuary.Tonigh

I forced my heavy eyelids open, the blinding fluorescence of the medical vault stinging my eyes. The tall silhouette towering beside my steel gurney stepped into the light. Cold, razor-sharp features, dark hair brushed back impeccably, and a pair of piercing, smoke-gray eyes that could freeze a man where he stood.Julian Vance. The undisputed kingpin of the northern territories—and Nikolai’s greatest, most lethal rival.I froze, my breath catching in my throat as my fingers instinctively reached for a blade that was no longer at my hip. "Julian?" My voice was raspy, laced with disbelief. "What... what are you doing in a private Richard family medical hideout?"Julian pulled up a sleek leather chair, turning it around to sit casually, resting his large, scarred hands over the top. A faint, razor-thin smirk played on his lips."Your blood leaves a very distinct trail on cobblestones, Maria," Julian murmured, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the sterile room. "And when my scouts r
