Chapter 4

Autor: Golden Altar
"Very well." I handed Vincent the documents and a pen. "These are the family's asset audit report for this quarter and the transfer lists for several offshore funds. Take a look."

For the past five years, I had handled everything myself, from the family's tangled accounts and money laundering operations to the movement of its assets.

Vincent had never once questioned any document I had put in front of him.

He flipped through a few pages without much care, then signed his name where I pointed.

His signature was as bold and showy as he was.

Vincent handed the folder back to me. He never noticed the thin agreement tucked among the stack of business documents.

I gathered the documents without saying a single word.

Then he drew me into a gentle embrace and leaned down to kiss me.

A sudden, urgent knock came from outside.

"Don Salvi, Ms. Vance suddenly complained of chest pain. She's crying and asking to see you."

Vincent rubbed his temples and frowned. The conflict in his eyes was plain to see.

I watched him in silence, waiting for him to decide.

He stood up, walked over with an apologetic look, and planted a half-hearted kiss on my forehead.

"Lilith is in poor health. I'll check on her and be right back. You should get some sleep."

He didn't even wait for my reply. Vincent grabbed his coat and strode out of the study.

The smile on my lips slowly vanished.

I walked to the window and watched his car speed away. Then I picked up a discreet-looking listening device and gently switched it on.

Vincent's voice came through, followed by that of his trusted aide.

His aide sounded worried. "Don Salvi, are you really handing the shipping route over to Ms. Vance? What about Donna Salvi?"

Vincent chuckled, his voice warm and confident.

"You don't understand Cecilia. She's my wife, and we've been through life and death together. Our fates have been tied together for years. She's just throwing a fit because she's jealous.

"Lilith is the sister of the man who saved my life. All I can give her is money and power. Cecilia is different. She has all my love and the entire Salvi family.

"Once Lilith earns the family's respect by proving herself, and I repay the debt I owe her, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to Cecilia. She loves me too much not to understand."

Hearing his words didn't make me angry. Instead, they finally set me free.

My love for him had been worn down over the years by his endless demands that I be reasonable and give in.

If his favoritism toward Lilith depended on my willingness to keep making sacrifices, then I no longer wanted to be the donna.

I tossed the listening device into the fireplace and watched it burn to ashes.

I pulled out the divorce papers Vincent had just signed.

I placed them in an elegant black velvet gift box along with the Star of Hope necklace he had given me that night. Then I tied the box with a ribbon.

Early on the fifth morning, I slipped out through the estate's back gate with nothing but a plain suitcase.

I took nothing from the Salvi family's fortune.

A black sedan was already waiting.

"Take me to the airport. I'm flying to Belloria," I said calmly.

I was going to the little town I had always dreamed of visiting.

The sedan glided into the thick fog.

I rolled down the window and tossed the encrypted phone I had used for five years into a roadside storm drain.

With that, I had cut off every possible means of contact with Vincent.

I closed my eyes.

Donna Salvi no longer existed.

…

Meanwhile, Vincent stumbled into the estate's study, looking worn out after spending the night dealing with Lilith.

"Cecilia?"

The study was empty, but he immediately spotted an elegant gift box tied with a ribbon. It was sitting in the center of his large desk.

A note in my neat handwriting rested on top.

It read, "A gift to you. Best of luck with your deal with Ms. Vance."

Vincent's tired features relaxed at once, and a tender smile spread across his face.

He knew I loved him too much to stay angry. All he had to do was give me a little room to come around, and I'd take care of everything like I always did.

Vincent eagerly untied the ribbon.

But the next moment, his smile froze.

Inside the box lay the pink diamond necklace and a set of divorce papers.

Just then, the tablet on his desk flashed red and blared a piercing alert.

On the surveillance feed, a deep, prolonged horn sounded across the western coast.

The black freighter belonging to weapons tycoon Nikolai Voskov had docked right on schedule.

The camp at the foot of the snow-covered mountain had a roaring fire.I used my satellite phone to take a call from a former subordinate overseas. The signal kept cutting out, but I could still hear his voice clearly."Ms. Russo, Vincent and Lilith are dead."I paused with a log in my hand, then casually stirred the embers with a fire poker."How did they die?" I asked."They were hiding in a slum. Lilith was going through a drug withdrawal and stole Vincent's last bit of money for painkillers."She put rat poison in Vincent's drinking water. She planned to wait for him to die, then use his money to buy drugs."But before the drug took effect, Vincent went berserk and strangled Lilith to death. "When the police showed up to collect the bodies, they found them dead on the floor of a rundown shack. Both bodies had begun to stink."A cold wind swept through the camp, making the tent flap and canvas walls rustle. The firelight flickered across my face."Understood. You don't n

It took me a year to bring Eldoria's legal and illegal logistics networks under my control. No one dared mention the Salvi family anymore.Everyone knew there was one person in the business no one could challenge.I held a controlling stake in the consortium and secured my position at the very top.At the victory banquet in Vanya, champagne towers reached the ceiling. Celebrities and politicians lined up with glasses in hand to congratulate me."Ms. Russo, your business skills are truly impressive.""It's a great honor to work with you."I stood onstage and looked out at the faces filled with awe and flattery.I was completely safe now and no longer needed grand titles to prove my worth.I called my lawyer over and signed a thick document on the spot."Everyone, effective today, I'm stepping down as the consortium's chief executive," I said. "My shares will be held in a trust, and a professional team will take care of everything that follows."The crowd erupted in shock.Th

Three months were all it took for a once-powerful family to fall apart completely.Rival families moved in and seized every last one of the Salvi family's businesses. The lights in Newerton's underground auction house were dim but glaring.I sat in a private box on the second floor and watched the auctioneer pitch his next item."Attention, bidders. This is the former Salvi family estate. Bidding starts at one million dollars."The large screen showed the house where I had lived for five years. Even the pink diamond necklace was thrown in as part of the same lot.I raised my bidding paddle. "Five million dollars. I'll take it all."My assistant leaned closer and quietly asked what I wanted done with the old items."Have the estate torn down and build an orphanage in its place. Don't leave a trace of what was there before," I said.I added, "As for the necklace, donate it at a charity gala. I don't want to keep something with such bad memories."I didn't look at the screen aga

The signing banquet was held that evening at the town's oldest estate.Dmitri raised his glass and introduced my new role to the senior members of the Eldorian consortium."To our newly appointed chief executive, Ms. Cecilia Russo.""To Ms. Russo!"Everyone raised their glasses, and the ballroom was filled with a warm, lively atmosphere.Just then, someone shoved open the estate's heavy front doors.Vincent rushed in wearing a wrinkled coat, his eyes bloodshot and his breathing ragged. His gaze swept over the crowd and locked onto me in my evening gown. Then he rushed to me as if I were his only hope. He reached out to grab my wrist."Cecilia, I've finally found you!"The bodyguards immediately stepped in and stopped him a few feet away from me.He stared at me through the black wall of suits, his chest heaving.Vincent clearly hadn't slept in days. Meanwhile, the flower-filled town in Belloria welcomed the crisp light of dawn.I wheeled my small suitcase through the gate of a local guesthouse. The white-haired owner of the place handed me a brass key.She said, "Welcome. I hope you find some peace and quiet here."I took the key and gave her a relaxed smile. "Thank you. This place is even more beautiful than I imagined."A cool breeze carrying the scent of pine brushed my cheeks. After leaving the Salvi family, even the air in this foreign country felt fresher.Meanwhile, Vincent had completely lost it in Newerton. He used every intelligence network his family controlled and paid hackers a fortune to help him search for me around the world. Finally, he found the flight details for my private jet to Belloria. As he stared at the familiar destination on his computer screen, Vincent's hands shook. He grabbed the landline receiver and called a private charter service."Arrange the flight now. The tablet on the desk flashed red and blared a shrill alarm beside the divorce papers.Vincent's gaze shifted between the pink diamond necklace and the signature on the papers. His head was spinning. He completely lost the composure he was usually so proud of.The door was suddenly thrown open, and a bodyguard drenched in blood stumbled and fell into the study."Don Salvi, it's terrible! Nikolai Voskov's ship is here. His men are fully armed, and they're demanding to see Donna Salvi!"Vincent slammed both hands onto the desk to steady himself. He strode forward and grabbed the bodyguard by his bloodstained collar. Vincent's eyes were bloodshot as he shouted furiously, "Where's Lilith? Didn't she take the ring with her? Tell her to handle the handover! And where are the veteran members who know how things are done?"The bodyguard coughed so hard that he could barely breathe. Blood dripped from his mouth and down his chin, landing on the back of Vincent's hand."Don Salvi, Ms.
