Chapter 12

Penulis: Warm Flow
The managers hurried back to work, relieved to escape.

They couldn't stop wondering what happened.

Jensen never lost his temper like that at the office.

He turned his phone over in his hand, his eyes dark and unreadable.

"I'll remind you about the meeting in ten minutes," Liam said.

He stepped out.

[Tomorrow at three. I'll see you at the courthouse.]

Jensen scoffed.

Lauren’s tactics were as clumsy as ever.

She sounded so convincing yesterday.

But when the appointed time came, she disappeared.

Lauren was as irritating as ever.

Jensen put thoughts of her aside and held his meeting.

He listened as his staff reported their progress.

The anger he carried all day gradually faded from his face.

Everyone else relaxed too.

By the time work ended, they felt fortunate to have made it through the day.

Rain had been pouring since the previous night, and the streets were badly flooded by evening. Employees who drove themselves left first.

Several women remained in the office, chatting while they waited for someone to pick them up.

As Jensen passed, he heard one of them exclaim, "There was a landslide on the western outskirts. A car was crushed with someone inside!"

"Why are you shouting? It's not anyone you know..."

"How awful. When was the last time Cloudhaven had rain like this?"

"Some people have such bad luck they could choke on a glass of water."

The western outskirts?

Lauren said yesterday that she was going there.

Jensen slowed, a frown forming before he could stop it.

"Sir."

One of the employees noticed him and quickly greeted him.

Everyone knew he was in a bad mood. The women fell silent.

Jensen nodded and walked on.

"Your parents called earlier. They'd like you to come home for dinner," Liam said as he followed.

"All right."

Jensen rubbed his forehead. He didn't sleep the night before.

His head felt heavy.

Rain struck the car so hard that the wipers couldn't clear the windshield.

There were few pedestrians, and even the roads seemed quieter than usual.

Severe storm alerts appeared on his phone one after another.

At a crossing, Vivian stood under an umbrella.

Rain soaked much of her long dress.

Liam braked and glanced back at Jensen. "I think that's Miss Shea."

"Let her in."

Jensen lowered the window and looked out.

"Jensen!"

Vivian’s eyes lit up.

She climbed into the car and sat beside him, shivering. "I didn't want to trouble you, but I suppose..."

"You shouldn't be walking alone in rain like this. We'll take you home first," Jensen said.

Liam looked at Vivian in the rearview mirror, then silently started driving.

Vivian lived in the opposite direction from Jensen’s parents, and the evening traffic was heavy.

Before long, his parents called again to ask where he was.

Vivian bit her lip. "If you need to go somewhere, you can let me out. I'll see if I can get a ride..."

"I'm having dinner at my parents’ house," Jensen said.

"You can come with me."

Vivian stared at him.

Even Lauren, Jensen’s lawful wife, visited the Shaw family home only a handful of times.

Vivian hid her delight and asked softly, "Are you sure that's all right?"

"It's fine," Jensen said.

Lauren wanted to play hard to get?

He would show her how badly that could backfire.

It was after seven when they arrived.

Jensen’s mother, Rachel Shaw, waited at the door.

The sight of her son with a rain-soaked woman made her visibly uncomfortable.

She and her husband didn't like Lauren.

But that didn't mean they welcomed their son’s lover into their home.

The Shaw family had a reputation to protect.

She asked someone to take Vivian to change.

Then she walked inside with Jensen and spoke quietly. "That's Vivian, isn't it? Even if you don't like Lauren, you should show her some respect. Why did you bring this woman here?"

The mention of Lauren irritated Jensen. "We crossed paths. I gave her a ride."

Inside, his father, Richard Shaw, watched the evening news.

The broadcast showed the landslide on the western outskirts. Heavy rain sent rocks tumbling down the hillside, and more than ten people died.

The news anchor’s formal voice grated on Jensen’s nerves.

Richard turned. "Jensen, you're here. Come, let's eat."

Vivian returned wearing clothes Lauren once left at the house.

She greeted Jensen’s parents gently.

Rachel hid her discomfort.

Richard didn't.

His face darkened. "Where's Lauren? Jensen, when did you get a new wife without telling your father?"

Jensen opened his mouth to answer.

His phone rang, and he picked up.

Wind and rain roared in the background. "Is this Mr. Jensen Shaw? The owner of the car with plate number Y9A721 died at the scene of an accident. Please come and identify her."

Lauren could not tell what Jensen was thinking these days. After the scene at the bridal boutique, he insisted that she and Quentin move back into the house where they had once lived. The flowers she planted were still there, thriving.Jensen cooked every meal. He would not let her lift a finger. He read Quentin his bedtime stories. Jensen also insisted on sharing Lauren’s bed each night, but he never asked her for more.Only when he thought she was asleep would he draw her into his arms and kiss her forehead.Jensen spent much of his life being admired.Lauren herself had once cared for his every need, while he accepted it all as his due. Now, after everything that happened, he seemed afraid that any happiness he found might slip away.Sometimes Lauren felt dazed. It was as if the pain of the past ten years had been a long nightmare. She had woken to find a sweet little boy and a gentle, attentive husband beside her.At other times, she feared this life was only a dream. One gust of

More than a dozen people set the documents by the entrance. The stacks of property deeds and share certificates alone were enough to block the doorway.Lauren stared at Jensen. “Have you lost your mind?”“Yes.” Jensen nodded. “I caught it from you, and there’s no cure. So, you’ll have to take responsibility for me.”Lauren had no answer. He had lost his mind and all sense of shame. What was she supposed to do with him?The doorway was blocked. She could not even leave. There was nowhere to go.Quentin tugged her hand and whispered, “He looks really rich...”Lauren took a deep breath. “Half of this already belongs to us. We’re rich too.”“But half isn’t as good as all of it,” Quentin whispered. “Even a kid in grade school knows which one to choose.”Lauren was speechless.Perhaps she had made Quentin live too frugally for too long. Now the sight of all that money had stopped him in his tracks. The silence grew awkward. Then Jensen took Lauren’s right hand and dropped to one knee.Af

“Jensen, let go!” His grip made Lauren’s wrist ache. She frowned. “Let me go!”“No!” Jensen was furious. “It took me so long to find you...”His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was hoarse. “You said you loved me. You said you wanted to spend your life with me! You made me what I am, Lauren. Now you think you can say the past doesn’t matter, leave me, and marry another man? I won’t let you!”Jensen had not slept in two days. He searched everywhere before finally finding her.And here she was, looking at wedding dresses with another man. Was she going to marry him?Lauren wrenched her wrist free and slapped Jensen. The sharp sound rang through the quiet boutique.“Jensen, are you finished?” she asked coldly. When they first met again, she thought they might be able to stay civil. They had loved and hated each other; perhaps they could at least part on decent terms. She no longer believed that.Jensen stared at her with red eyes and said nothing. He had once been known in Cloudhav

Quentin was still adjusting to the time difference. After dinner, he could barely keep his eyes open.Evelyn took them home, sent Miles to the guest room, and shared her bed with Lauren and her little godson. She turned off the light.Quentin’s soft breathing filled the quiet room. After a long silence, Evelyn said, “I’m so glad you’re back.”Only she knew how frightened she had been when she helped Lauren leave years ago.Lauren’s health was so poor that giving birth to Quentin had nearly cost her life.“Me too.” Lauren smiled gently. “I’m glad I lived long enough to see you both again.”They lay together and talked about the years they had spent apart.Evelyn spoke mostly about herself and Miles. The two had always argued, yet somehow they had found their way to marriage.“I can hardly believe it myself,” Evelyn said.“When two people are right for each other, it’s easy to fall in love over time,” Lauren said. She and Jensen had spent five years together and only come to resent eac

By the time Jensen returned to the apartment building, it was dark.He knocked on Lauren’s door for a long time, but no one answered. She did not pick up his calls either. When he contacted the landlady, she told him, “Miss Sullivan ended her lease early.”Jensen panicked.Lauren was gone.Just as she had done before, she disappeared from his life without hesitation. He called on everyone he knew to find her. Finding information overseas took far longer than it would have in Cloudhaven. It was late at night before he heard anything. His assistant finished a call and approached Jensen, who had been sitting outside Lauren’s door the whole time. “Mr. Shaw, we found her. Mrs. Shaw took your son back to Cloudhaven.”“Cloudhaven?”Jensen’s voice was hoarse. Then he gave a sudden smile. “She’s still willing to go back there. That’s good.”His assistant asked cautiously, “If she’s returned to Cloudhaven, there may be questions about her shares in the group...”“I hope she comes to claim th

Jensen hit the water with a loud splash.Lauren froze. Her mind went blank.A few seconds later, people walking along the river began to shout.“Someone jumped in!”“Help him!”Voices in different languages rose around her until she could barely think.Quentin’s little face went white. He clutched her hand. “Mommy! Mommy! Was that... Jensen?”Lauren came to her senses and ran down the steps to the riverbank.Jensen had sunk the moment he hit the water. There was no sign of him. The ripples spread, then slowly faded. It was as if nothing had happened.Lauren ran so fast that she fell hard. She scraped her knees and palms bloody, but felt no pain as she scrambled to the water’s edge.“Jensen!”Tears spilled down her cheeks. She shouted his name at the top of her lungs.“Jensen, have you lost your mind?”“Jensen, come out!”People shouted all around her. Quentin called for her from the railing, but their voices blurred together. For a moment, her whole world seemed to turn upside down.
