Chapter 4

Author: Cup Culprit
“He didn't even show up to dinner last time, and it's been almost two weeks now without a single apology. What kind of attitude is that?”

“Mom, we're fine,” I comforted her softly. “He's just been really busy with the competition lately. Don't overthink it.”

“No matter how busy he is, does he not even have time to make a phone call to his elders?” Mom's voice grew louder.

“I’ve already talked it over with your dad. This guy is unreliable. If it’s not working out, just break up with him and come back home! You're not desperate, so why should you put up with it?”

“Mom…”

“Don't say another word. I see right through him now. He just doesn't care about you!”

After hanging up the phone, I sat on the couch and stared into space for a very long time.

Even my mom could see it clearly, yet it took me three whole years to realize.

Over these past years, I cooked and cleaned for him, managed his social relationships, and pushed him step by step into the position of a gold-medal coach.

How ridiculous.

The house key was still lying on the coffee table, one he had personally handed to me back when he begged me to move in with him.

Now, he could have it back.

Inside the auditorium, the lights were dazzling.

Sean and Madison’s partnership was absolutely perfect. Every single movement was precise and full of intensity.

The applause from the audience was deafening.

As Sean bowed at the end of the performance, he instinctively looked out toward the audience.

In every past competition, no matter how far away it was, Ellie would always be sitting right there, cheering for him.

But today, there was only an empty seat, standing completely alone in the crowd.

Sean's heart began to race with a panic tighter than he had ever felt before.

“Sean! We did it! We’re the champions!”

Madison and the rest of the team hugged him excitedly, screaming and shouting with joy.

However, Sean couldn't hear a single thing anymore.

Only one thought echoed in his mind.

She really didn't come.

“Sean, what's wrong? Why do you look so pale?” Madison asked worriedly. “Are you not feeling well? What about the after-party tonight…”

“I'm not going.”

Roughly pushing Madison away, Sean ignored the stunned looks of everyone around him, grabbed his jacket, and rushed out.

“Sean! Where are you going? The award ceremony hasn't even started yet!” the teammates shouted behind him.

“I have an emergency! You guys bring the trophy back. I have to go home right now!”

Yelling back without even turning his head, Sean ran out of the auditorium like crazy and hailed a cab.

“Sir, take me to Meadowbrook Apartments! Step on it! It's an emergency!”

The entire way there, he kept calling Ellie.

An automated female voice repeated over and over again, notifying him that the phone was turned off.

Sean's hands were shaking so badly that he could barely hold his phone.

No way.

Ellie was definitely just throwing a tantrum, waiting at home for him to go back and coax her.

As long as he apologized properly and swore never to get that close to Madison again, she would definitely forgive him.

“She loves me so much. How could she ever actually leave me?”

Before the car could even come to a complete stop, Sean threw down a handful of hundred-dollar bills and rushed out into the pouring rain.

He stumbled his way into the elevator, frantically smashing the button for his floor.

Finally, he arrived at the sixteenth floor.

Trembling, he pulled out his keys and shoved them into the lock.

With a click, the door swung open.

The apartment was pitch-black and terrifyingly quiet.

“Ellie?”

“Call a doctor and schedule a hymenoplasty immediately. Mr. Smith doesn't need to find out about a minor setback like this.”After delivering the order, he turned toward the officers, his attitude shifting into something far more cooperative.“Officers, this whole thing was just a big misunderstanding. Our kid was just throwing a childish tantrum and acting out. We’re dropping the charges right now.”Dropping the charges, of course, was only to make sure nothing got in the way of her marriage.A wave of chill washed over me.So it turned out that all of Madison’s blatant provocations, all those frantic confessions she wanted the entire world to know about…None of it was because she actually loved Sean.Instead, she was simply using him as a lifeline to escape her family's arranged marriage. She just wanted to find someone to destroy her value as a commodity, to break free from a fate where she was stamped with a price tag. And for that, she hadn't hesitated to wreck my relati

Mr. Grant kicked the interrogation room door wide open, storming right up to Sean and screamed, “You pathetic excuse for a dance teacher! Who gave you the balls to touch my daughter?!”“Dad!”Madison rushed in right behind him, panic and anticipation written all over her face.“Sir, I didn’t do it…” Sean stammered, his face deathly pale as he tried to defend himself.“Shut the hell up!” Mr. Grant roared, not giving him a single second to speak, his voice completely dripping with rage. “We sent her to your studio to learn some skills so she could better serve Mr. Smith, not for a bottom-feeding cockroach like you to try and climb the social ladder!“How is she supposed to marry Mr. Smith now?! Can you even afford to pay for this?!”As he yelled, Mr. Grant raised a fist, ready to smash it straight into Sean’s face.“Sir! Please calm down! This is a police station!”Two officers reacted instantly, rushing forward and holding him back with a tight grip.“Mr. Grant, I’m afraid th

Late into the night, I received a phone call from an unknown number.“Hello, is this Ms. Ellie Warren? This is the Westside Police Department.”“We have a Mr. Sean Olson in custody, and he is requesting that you come down to post bail for him.”Bail? What on earth did he do?“Officer, I’m sorry, but I think you have the wrong person. Sean and I aren't related.”“But he claims you are his fiancée…”“Not anymore.”The officer’s voice turned incredibly serious and cold over the line. “Well, Mr. Olson has been detained under suspicion of sexual assault, and he has repeatedly begged for you to come down here.”Sexual assault? How could a word like that ever be tied to Sean?Even though I had already resolved to completely cut ties with him, hearing this news still left me stunned for a good while. After hesitating over and over, I ended up calling an Uber and heading down to the station anyway. The moment I arrived, I saw Madison curled up on a bench. She was wearing an oversize

“I’m telling you right now, Ellie is the only woman I will ever love.“Even if she doesn't want me anymore, I will still only love her.”He sounded completely earnest. Every bit of color drained from Madison’s face.“Are you two finished with your little drama scene? Because if you are, I have to go to work.”Turning toward the curb, I hailed a passing taxi and climbed straight into the backseat without looking back.“Ellie! Don't go!”Sean tried to chase after the car, but Madison held him back with all her might.“Sean! Wake up! She doesn't love you anymore!“Why won't you just turn around and look at me? I’m clearly the one who loves you the most…”Well said. But I couldn't even be bothered to look back.…By the time Sean finally managed to shake Madison off, Ellie was already long gone. He wandered the streets for hours like a literal ghost.Suddenly, his phone started ringing.Seeing Madison's name on the screen, his first instinct was to reject the call, but a te

Dad snatched the baseball bat sitting right by the door and swung it toward Sean without hesitation.“Can't understand plain English, can you? Do I really need to throw you out myself?”Sean didn't even dare to dodge, taking the hits straight to his body. He stood there miserably in the hallway until our front door slammed shut right in his face.It was as if all his remaining hope had been completely locked out, but Sean didn't give up.The very next morning, I went downstairs to take out the trash before heading to work and saw him standing there holding a container and a bottle. He had dark circles under his eyes, clearly having gone the entire night without sleep.“Ellie, I brought your favorite, freshly made almond milk and sourdough toast.”The moment he saw me, he immediately rushed over, offering the breakfast to me as if presenting a prized treasure.“You used to wake up early to make this for me, so now it's my turn to make it for you. I tried it a bunch of times,

Sean’s face instantly flushed bright red, and he awkwardly held the box of chocolates.“Sir, it's me, Sean.”“I… I came to apologize to you and Mrs. Warren. These are some artisanal chocolates I promised Ellie, and these flowers are for her.”Dad let out a cold sneer.“Well, Coach Olson. Don't you have practice with that Madison girl today? No extra training sessions? You aren't worried about ruining your reputation anymore?”“Sir, I'm so sorry. I was incredibly immature before…” Sean kept his head down, his voice completely raspy. “I know I was wrong. I really do. Ellie, please come back home with me, okay? Without you, I really can't function.”I just leaned against the doorframe, watching his pathetic, submissive display. If this had been the old me, seeing him stand out in the rain for my sake and getting cornered by Dad like this would have broken my heart. I would have stepped in and defended him instantly. But now? I only found the bouquet in his arms an eyesore.“Do
