Chapter 1 The Engagement Is Off

Author: Little Shadow
I looked at Landon Rivers, who was grimacing in pain, and drawled calmly, "I paid two million dollars to have a famous 3D pavement artist create this. It was supposed to give the place some class."

Landon glared at me resentfully. A moment later, he seemed to make up his mind.

Sure enough, he started yowling at the top of his lungs. "Louis, I know you don't want me at the engagement party, but you can't push me because of it!"

A woman in a white evening gown rushed in just as those words fell from his lips. It was Julianne Brooks, a prominent heiress in Kingsbridge's high society.

I frowned, wondering what she was doing here.

Julianne immediately helped Landon to his feet. Then, she turned on me, hissing, "Landon's always been in poor health, but you pushed him anyway? How could you be so heartless?"

Landon shot me a smug look, but his voice was meek and pitiful when he spoke. "Julianne, don't blame Louis. He just loves you too much. He's afraid I'll take you away from him…"

Julianne glared at me with disgust. "Louis, Landon is the one I've always loved. I never would've spared you a second glance if Grandpa hadn't forced me into this!"

Landon gazed at her adoringly.

I couldn't help but scrunch my nose in distaste. Apparently, those two had taken those ridiculous billionaire-romance novels way too seriously. They'd read so many of them that they'd forgotten how the real world works.

I was about to speak when our parents bulldozed over.

Joanna Paige raised her hand and went straight for my face. "You're nothing but a jinx! The Rivers family raised you for years, and this is how you repay us? By bullying Landon?"

I caught Joanna's hand in midair and promptly shoved it away, sending her staggering away.

Joanna shook with anger. "Are you out of your mind? How dare you push me!" she screeched.

I ignored her and turned to Julianne with a mocking smile. "You never would've given me a second look, you say?"

Julianne snorted. "A vicious man like you doesn't deserve to marry into the Brooks family! Landon is the man I'm going to marry!"

I chuckled softly, far too amused for my own good. "Fine."

I pulled out the engagement contract we hadn't gotten around to exchanging and tore it to pieces in front of everyone.

"Julianne, our engagement is canceled."

Julianne froze for a moment, clearly not expecting me to do it so decisively.

After all, she'd been told repeatedly by everyone that marrying the Brooks family's heiress was the dream of every young man in Kingsbridge's high society.

Sadly for her, I was different. I was the man George Brooks had personally handpicked to marry his granddaughter.

"You think this little act of yours is going to work on me?" Julianne gritted her teeth as she snarled. "I'm not going to change my mind even if you tear up the contract!"

I looked at her as if she were an idiot.

"Can you even understand the human language? I said I was canceling the engagement, and I meant exactly that. Now that the engagement is off, let's settle a few other things."

I snapped my fingers. "Security, escort these people out."

Julianne stared at me in disbelief. "You dare throw me out?"

Logan Rivers roared, "Louis! This is the Rivers family's place. Who do you think you are to give orders here?"

I said calmly, "This place belongs to me, and I paid for the party. Naturally, I have every right to toss you interlopers out.

"As for the Rivers family? If it weren't for me, the Rivers family would've gone bankrupt three years ago. The only reason you're still standing here is because I've been supporting you and your luxurious lifestyle. Now, I don't feel like doing that anymore."

You gave Julianne that medicine?"Charles pointed at Clara with a trembling finger, his jaw clenched with unmistakable fury. "How dare you say that! You didn't want me to have an illegitimate child who could come back and fight for the family fortune. That's why you secretly drugged my soup to make me infertile. "How was I supposed to know it would end up affecting Julianne? You thought you'd covered your tracks perfectly, but I found out about your scheme a long time ago. I didn't want any more kids anyway, so I let it go…"Charles squeezed his eyes shut in pain. I couldn't help but burst into laughter at the smug look on his face.Landon was so ridiculously stupid that it was funny, piteously so.Then, he reached for my hand as he plastered a fake smile across his face. "Louis, I was the one at fault in the past. Let me offer you a toast. Please, just let Julianne and me be together!"I instinctively took half a step back from his outstretched hand. "Don't touch me. You're disgusting."That half-step gave Landon exactly what he needed.A flash of malice crossed his eyes. Then, he suddenly threw himself backward as if I'd shoved him."Ah! My leg!" Landon collapsed onto the floor with a shrill cry, his face contorted in pain."Louis! I know you don't like me, but how could you push me?" He cried out as though he'd suffered some terrible injustice.Julianne rushed over and shoved me aside. "Louis! When we got home, Logan and Joanna were both cold toward me.Joanna pointed a finger at me. "Louis, how could you treat your brother like that today? He went through so much out there before finally making it home. Couldn't you have let him have his way for once?"Logan's expression hardened. "Exactly! Did you even consider how many people saw us making fools of ourselves tonight? How could you not think about what it'll do to the River family's image? Apologize to Landon. Now."Landon stood off to the side, a smug smile tugging at his lips.I swept my gaze at this family of leeches, these parasites who had been living off me."I see you're all so proud of yourselves. Very well, then."I pulled out my phone and called the bank. "Mr. Vance, cancel every card under the Rivers family's names."The living room went silent.Logan shot to his feet, his face turning stark white. "Louis! What the hell are you doing? The room went dead silent.Clara's voice turned low and serious as she whipped around to face her daughter. "When did this happen?"Julianne looked a little embarrassed, but she still gazed at Landon with a lovestruck smile. "It's been almost two months. The doctor said the pregnancy isn't stable, so I have to avoid stress."Landon finally snapped out of his daze, his face lighting up with sheer delight. He was still a little stunned, but he quickly recovered and clasped Julianne's hand. "Julianne, really? I'm so happy!"Julianne turned to me with a smug smile. "Louis, Grandpa might've been fooled by your facade, but now that I'm carrying Landon's child? Well, let's see what he has to say!"I met her taunt with a cold stare.I didn't love Julianne. To me, this engagement was nothing more than an obligation. Nevertheless, that didn't mean I would let her trample all over my dignity. Two months pregnant?Hah! That was when George had just announced our engagement. She'd been st

This is all my fault. I never should've come home…"He started backing away as he spoke, pretending to be considerate.Julianne felt terribly sorry for him. She turned on me. "Louis, you're so calculating. You can never hope to hold a candle to Landon!"I looked at the two morons in front of me and almost laughed at their faces.I was about to speak when a sharp female voice rang out from the entryway. "Julianne, have you lost your mind?"Julianne froze and instinctively let go of Landon.
