Chapter 3

Author: Alyssa J
Damien and I stood side by side in wolf form atop the tallest boulder.

Below us, the entire pack cheered.

The moment we prepared to leap, a grey wolf none of us recognized charged into the plaza.

It was Selene's brother.

He shifted back to human form right in front of us, eyes blazing with rage.

Before the entire pack, he pointed straight up at Damien on the boulder and roared:

"You ungrateful hypocrite!"

"My sister took a blade for you! She threw herself between you and that knife!"

"She spent three months bedridden, and to this day her wound still makes her tremble in agony every full moon!"

"How do you think you held onto your Alpha position?"

"My sister dragged you out of a rogue ambush with her bare hands! She nearly died for you!"

"Without Selene, you'd be dead, Damien!"

"And now you turn around and demote her to the lowest outcast rank?"

His furious shouts echoed across the entire plaza.

The crowd went silent. The cheering died instantly.

Every wolf's eyes locked onto Damien.

I didn't hesitate. I spoke first, cutting through the tension.

My voice was calm but carried clearly to every corner of the plaza.

"Selene saved him because she chose to. No one forced her."

"If one act of rescue entitles someone to claim another woman's husband as her lover, then who in this pack would ever dare save anyone again?"

Selene's brother choked on his response, his face flushing red.

At that moment, Selene herself pushed through the crowd, eyes brimming with tears.

She rushed forward and grabbed her brother's arm.

"Stop it. The Luna's right—I shouldn't have had feelings for the Alpha that I had no right to."

"I saved him because I wanted to. I never expected anything in return."

Her brother was shaking with anger. He gripped her shoulders.

"You're letting yourself suffer for nothing. He's not worth it!"

Damien finally spoke.

His voice was low, carrying absolute authority.

"Elena is my only Luna. She was then, she is now, and she always will be."

"Leave. Don't make a scene here."

He reached out and pulled me tightly into his arms.

His grip was strong.

But pressed against him, I could feel the arm wrapped around me trembling.

I followed his line of sight.

In the firelight, I caught what flickered through his eyes as he looked at Selene.

It wasn't anger. It was unmistakable heartache.

A sharp pain stabbed through my chest.

I'd already made up my mind to leave. But it still hurt.

Just then, a piercing howl ripped through the forest at the edge of the plaza.

Rogues. A raid.

A dozen feral wolves burst from the darkness, lunging straight at the crowd.

Chaos erupted instantly.

The largest rogue charged directly at Selene, who stood exposed at the edge of the crowd.

Damien's reaction was pure instinct.

He shoved me toward the Beta standing nearby.

In the same breath, he shifted and threw himself in front of Selene.

He used his own body to shield her from the rogue's claws.

The rogue tore three gashes down Damien's back, deep enough to expose bone.

Selene escaped with a scraped knee from being knocked over.

And me—shoved carelessly toward the Beta—I fell hard onto the gravel.

The back of my skull cracked against the stone corner of the altar. Blood poured immediately.

Everything around me was chaos.

Someone screamed: "The Luna's down! She's bleeding!"

But Damien's back was still gushing blood.

When he shifted back to human form, his first move wasn't to turn and look at me.

He bent down, pulled Selene to her feet, and asked in a low voice if she was hurt.

My vision was already going dark.

I watched Damien support Selene as they walked toward the safe zone.

Then I blacked out completely.

When I came to, I was lying in the pack's medical wing.

Voices drifted in from the next room.

Two young she-wolves were chatting. They assumed I was still unconscious, so they didn't bother keeping their voices down.

"Did you see that?"

"The Alpha shielded that Omega with his own body—the rogues ripped three gashes down his back. He's still bleeding."

The other voice chimed in immediately.

"Right? He was torn up that badly, and the first thing he did was run to check on Selene and give her painkillers."

"The Luna was unconscious for two hours and no one even looked in on her."

"Honestly? I think the Alpha and that Omega are the real pair."

"You can see how worried he gets about her."

I lay in bed staring at the white ceiling.

My face showed nothing.

A long time passed before the door finally opened.

Damien stood in the doorway.

Damien's laughter erupted through the silent garage. He laughed until the tears came—hot and uncontrollable, streaming down his face.He pulled out his phone, the screen shattered across more than half its surface. He dialed the Wolf Council's law enforcement hotline. His voice was eerily calm. No emotion at all."I'm in the underground garage of a hotel in the neighboring city. I just strangled someone. She's dying.""I'm the former Alpha of Shadow Ridge Pack. Send someone to arrest me."He hung up and slumped against the car door.He closed his eyes and waited in silence as the wail of sirens grew from distant to deafening.Selene survived. Barely. Emergency surgery pulled her back from the edge. But the prolonged oxygen deprivation had caused severe, irreversible brain damage. Her cognitive function was permanently destroyed. She would never care for herself again. The Wolf Council and human judicial authorities convened a joint high court to try the case.Selene was charged on mult

After the inauguration ended, the sky had gone completely dark. The guests filed out of the grand hall one by one.I walked out alone and climbed the hillside above Nightfall territory to let the wind clear my head.Behind me, the sound of steady footsteps.A large coat, still warm from someone's body heat, settled gently over my shoulders."It's getting cold. Wind's strong up here." Adrian's low voice came from beside me.He stood quietly at my side, keeping exactly one person's width of respectful distance between us. Not a step closer. We were silent for a moment. I looked out into the night and thanked him softly.Adrian didn't turn to look at me. But from the corner of my eye, I saw the tips of his ears flush bright red.I understood what the gesture meant. But I had no intention of acknowledging it.Right now, all I wanted was to pour everything I had into my work as a Healer. I was going to build Nightfall's entire medical system from the ground up.I pulled the coat tighter aro

Damien staggered out of my empty bedroom.Every ounce of strength had been drained from his body.He drifted back to the wrecked living room, hollow-eyed.He looked down at Selene, still curled in the corner of the sofa with her face buried in her hands, sobbing. He snapped. He seized her by the front of her shirt and yanked her off the sofa."What did you do behind my back?" he roared, eyes bloodshot. "What did you say to Elena that made her leave like this?"Selene was shaking violently under the full weight of his rage.Through tears, she admitted she had secretly sent me the sex video. She'd taunted me in it, telling me that Damien's real love was her.Damien released her with a look of pure revulsion, throwing her back onto the sofa. Then he let out a single laugh—hollow, desperate."She's really gone. And I'm about to lose my Alpha position too.""You've destroyed everything I had, Selene. Are you finally satisfied?"He bent his tall frame down until his face was inches from her

The Wolf Council moved faster than anyone could have imagined. The morning after my post went live, an official notice bearing the Council's highest-level silver wolf seal appeared pinned to the top of the Howl forum. It was simultaneously force-pushed to every pack's internal announcement channel. There was no diplomatic language. No euphemisms."Effective immediately, all territorial authority of Damien as Alpha of Shadow Ridge Pack is fully suspended.""The Council has dispatched a top-tier interim Alpha to assume control of all internal and external affairs of Shadow Ridge Pack."The final line was severe:"The Wolf Council maintains an absolute zero-tolerance policy toward any violation of the sacred Mate Bond oath or any abuse of Alpha authority for personal gain."That single notice was, in effect, a public confirmation that every piece of evidence I had submitted was verified and damning.Overnight, Damien went from being the golden-boy Alpha to the most despised wolf in North

Adrian brought me to a hidden safe house in Nightfall Pack territory. He poured me a glass of hot water and sat down across from me. No small talk. Strictly business."You're filing a formal complaint against a Pack Alpha with his own territory. The Wolf Council only accepts hard evidence." He looked me in the eye. "Do you have it?"I set down the glass and pulled an encrypted black USB drive from my bag.I placed it on the table in front of him."This contains the original sex video of Damien and Selene—the one Selene sent me anonymously. His mate ring is clearly visible in the footage.""It also has copies of the border surveillance logs—recordings of him sneaking to Selene's lean-to in wolf form countless times in the middle of the night.""I copied the vault access records too. Protocol requires council authorization to use the Moon Spirit Stone. He took it by force last night without going through any proper channels."I paused and met Adrian's eyes."There's also one final record

Selene clung to Damien's hand, trembling and sobbing. The silver-grey lines on her neck were creeping slowly toward her cheeks."Alpha, I don't want to die…""When I took that blade for you, I wasn't afraid at all.""But right now… I'm so scared of dying…"For the first time in my life, I dropped to my knees in front of Damien.I abandoned every shred of my Luna's dignity and looked up at the man I had loved for four years."Damien, my mother is the only family I have left in this world.""Please. Give me the Moon Spirit Stone. Please save her."Anguish was written all over Damien's face. His gaze darted back and forth between Selene, barely conscious, and me.At that exact moment, Selene's phone screen lit up on the desk. She feigned weakness, letting her wrist slide limply. She "accidentally" turned the screen to face Damien. It was playing a surveillance video on loop.In the footage, my mother was walking through the territory's market, shopping by herself. Her stride was perfectly
