Chapter 5 The Insurance

Autor: Joy Feast
I walked straight into Jesse's office and found Gideon sitting sideways on her lap, holding a grape to her lips.

The door opened so suddenly that he nearly slipped off.

Jesse frowned when she saw me. "Anthony? What are you doing here?"

"Working." I tapped the employee badge around my neck that read, "HarborPoint Insurance."

Then, I smiled at her. "Ms. Knapp, how about helping your ex-husband hit his sales quota?"

Gideon let out a quiet laugh. "Anthony, this is quite the career change."

Jesse's frown deepened. Apparently, having an ex-husband who sold insurance was embarrassing for her too. She asked, "Do you need money? The divorce settlement gives you two properties, plus—"

"I'm thinking long-term," I cut in. "Property isn't a career. It's about time I built something of my own."

She studied me for a few seconds before waving her hand impatiently. "I already have more insurance than I need. I—"

I pulled a contract from my briefcase and placed it on her desk. "This one's different. It's a high-limit accidental death policy. You can name Gideon as the beneficiary, or the two of you could each take out a policy and name each other."

I glanced between them with a smile. "Consider it proof of your undying love."

Gideon's eyes immediately lit up. "Jesse, I actually like that. It's romantic."

Jesse gave him an indulgent look before finally nodding. "Fine. Put Gideon down as the beneficiary."

...

The next five days passed quickly, and before long, New Year's Eve had arrived.

Dominic and Haleigh asked me to return to the Knapp Residence for the celebration.

"Anthony, whatever happened between you and Jesse, we're still a family," he said to me. "At least come spend New Year's with the kids."

I agreed, though celebrating was the last thing on my mind.

I needed to be there when Jesse took her final breath.

At six that evening, Jesse arrived with Gideon clinging tightly to her arm. The two of them were so close they might as well have been attached at the hip.

When she saw me, a trace of guilt crossed her face.

"Gideon's grandpa has stabilized," she told me after a brief hesitation. "Getting remarried might have to wait a little longer."

I calmly took another sip of wine without looking at her. "Do whatever you want. One year or ten years, it makes no difference to me."

Her brows drew together. "Anthony, don't be like that. You've always been understanding."

A humorless laugh escaped me. "Of course I have. I was understanding enough to hand my wife over to another man."

Jesse stiffened, and for once, she had nothing to say.

By half-past eleven, everyone had gathered on the terrace. The staff had prepared fireworks for midnight, and the children raced around excitedly, barely able to contain themselves.

I called all three of them over and kept them close.

A security camera mounted beneath the eaves overlooked the entire terrace, capturing Jesse, Gideon, her parents, the children, and me.

Everything that happened tonight would be recorded. That footage might become important later.

Gideon remained glued to Jesse's side, almost as though he wanted to make sure everyone understood exactly who held the place beside her now.

At one point, he deliberately raised his left hand, letting the diamond on his ring finger catch the light. "Jesse, I swear this ring looks even better in person than it did in the pictures."

Jesse smiled and kissed his fingertips. "I'm glad you like it."

A faint blush spread across Gideon's cheeks before he turned toward me with an innocent smile. "Anthony, I hope you don't mind. It's my first New Year's with the Knapps, so I'm a little nervous."

Nervous? The way his arm tightened around Jesse's waist told a very different story.

The children gradually fell quiet, while across the terrace, Dominic and Haleigh watched them with stony expressions.

Jesse simply pretended not to notice.

Soon, the countdown began, and everyone joined in.

"Ten! Nine! Eight…"

"Three! Two! One!"

I kept my eyes fixed on Jesse the entire time. Even as the final seconds ticked away, she was still smiling.

Then, the first firework burst across the night sky.

"Happy New Year!"

Dozens more followed, lighting up the estate in brilliant flashes as the children cheered excitedly and Dominic and Haleigh forced strained smiles.

Gideon threw his arms around Jesse's neck and kissed her. "Happy New Year, Jesse!"

Jesse laughed and wrapped her arms around him, then her smile suddenly froze. Her right hand flew to her chest, fingers clutching at the fabric of her dress.

"Jesse?"

Gideon pulled back just as the color drained from her face.

She opened her mouth as if she wanted to speak, but no sound came out.

A second later, her knees gave way, and her body went limp, sending her collapsing backward like a puppet with its strings cut.

I stayed where I was, watching her fall.

Then, at that exact moment, the System's voice echoed through my mind. "Mission complete. Lifespan transfer commencing..."

I said, "I'm staying."The System remained silent for several seconds, as if giving me one final chance to reconsider. Then, its response appeared. "Choice confirmed. The connection to your original timeline has been closed. You will continue living in this world as Anthony Holmes."Another line followed. "All transferred lifespan will remain with you. Total acquired lifespan: forty-nine years."I was thirty-two.With another forty-nine years added to my life, I still had a long road ahead of me....Jesse's funeral was held three days later.A thin layer of snow covered the Knapp family's cemetery, dusting the holly trees and gravestones in white. Hundreds of people came to pay their respects—business executives, government officials, reporters, and countless others dressed in black.I stood at the front with the three children beside me.My oldest son was nine. He didn't cry, but he held my hand so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.My second son, seven, kept his head

I asked the technicians to bring their equipment into the living room.Only Dominic, Haleigh, the family attorney, an independent notary, and I were present; no reporters, no extended family members, and no outsiders. The three children were already asleep upstairs with their nanny. Once everything was connected, the screen flickered to life. The same hospital corridor from ten years ago appeared before us, washed in the harsh white glow of fluorescent lights. Even through the screen, I could almost imagine the sterile smell of disinfectant.A younger Jesse sat on the floor, leaning against the wall. Her shirt was darkened with Anthony's blood at the front. Her hands lay loosely on her knees, but her fingers continued to shake. The phone in her pocket kept vibrating, but she ignored it.Above the emergency room doors, the red light remained on.The corridor was almost silent except for the distant hum of medical equipment and Jesse's uneven breathing. This time, there was no

Stefan's retaliation came quickly. He sent photographs of my ledger to the Knapp family group chat.…By the next morning, seven or eight senior members of the extended family had arrived at the Knapp Residence.Officially, they had come to pay their respects, yet not one of them went to Jesse's memorial first.Patrick Knapp, Dominic's second uncle and the oldest member of the group, took the main seat in the living room and struck his cane once against the floor."Anthony, Jesse is gone now." His expression was stern. "There are certain matters we need to clear up."I stood at the foot of the staircase and looked at them calmly. "Such as?"The old man placed several photographs on the coffee table. They were clear shots of my leather-bound ledger, page after page spread out for everyone to see.Dexter Walsh, Eliot Yates, Riley Lott, Gideon Bender—each name listed with Jesse's gifts and their affairs.Patrick looked up at me. Stefan sat at the head of the boardroom table, looking perfectly composed.Twelve directors sat in total, and seven of them had already sided with him.…Meanwhile, Dominic sat at the opposite end of the table, his expression grim.He had stepped away from the company's daily operations years ago and now served only as honorary chairman. He still carried considerable influence, but he no longer had the authority to overturn a board decision on his own.Stefan was just about to call for a vote when the conference-room doors opened.I walked in.The Knapp family's chief counsel followed behind me, along with an independent trust officer."Anthony?" Stefan frowned the moment he saw us. "This is a board meeting. You have no standing to be here."I ignored him and walked straight toward the presentation screen. After plugging in a flash drive, I pulled up a certified copy of Jesse's trust documents—the same trust Gideon had tried to destroy. Then, I turned to the final section.

I opened the recovered messages and began reading. The earliest dated back eight months."Gideon, I put together everything Jesse likes in a man. Check your email."Another message followed."Someone from her past has been haunting her. A man who died years ago. Make yourself look and act enough like him, and she'll take the bait."I scrolled further down the conversation until I reached a series of messages sent three months earlier."Timing matters if you want her to marry you. Wait until she's completely dependent on you before you make your move.""Use your grandfather. Guilt will work better than pressure."Then came the messages from a month ago."The surrogate story is your last card. If the Knapps believe an embryo has already been implanted, you can drag the inheritance fight out for months.""That should give me enough time to handle things at the board level." The final message had been sent the day after Jesse died."Things are moving faster than expected. Your

Jesse's recovered memory footage was never released to the public.Instead, they released a written summary of the evidence, jointly verified by the police and Reverie Technologies. That alone was enough, and public opinion shifted almost overnight. The article accusing me of plotting Jesse's death received so much backlash that the publisher eventually turned off the comments. Before long, two new topics had taken over social media, namely, "Jesse Knapp drove her husband to death ten years ago" and "Dexter Walsh's texts leaked."I didn't give a single interview.
