LOGINThree weeks had passed since Aria arrived in Nightshade territory, and her leg had finally healed enough for her to walk without limping. Elena had cleared her for light activity, which meant it was time to start contributing to the pack.
Aria stood outside the pack house, nervously smoothing down her borrowed clothes. Lyra had given her several outfits, insisting she needed more than the few items she'd brought in her pack. The kindness still surprised her.
"Ready?" Lyra appeared beside her, already dressed in training gear. "Don't look so worried. Everyone's excited to meet you properly."
"What if they don't like me?" Aria asked quietly. "What if they think I'm just a burden?"
"Then they'd be idiots." Lyra linked her arm through Aria's. "Come on. Dante's waiting to show you around and figure out where you'll fit best."
They found Dante in the training grounds, sparring with a large warrior. He moved with lethal grace, his movements fluid and controlled. When he spotted them, he called a halt and approached with a welcoming smile.
"Aria. Good to see you up and about." His hazel eyes assessed her with the practiced eye of an Alpha. "How's the leg?"
"Much better. Elena says I'm healing well."
"Good. I thought we'd spend the morning showing you around, introducing you to people, and seeing what interests you." He gestured for her to follow. "In Nightshade, we believe everyone has something valuable to offer. Your omega status doesn't limit your options here."
As they walked, Dante explained the pack's structure. Unlike Silvermoon's rigid hierarchy, Nightshade operated more like a community. Yes, there were ranks, but wolves were encouraged to pursue their strengths rather than being confined by their birth status.
They visited the healing house first, where Elena worked with two other healers. The herb gardens were impressive, carefully maintained beds of medicinal plants.
"Do you have any interest in healing?" Dante asked.
Aria thought about it. "I've always been drawn to it, but I was never taught. In Silvermoon, omegas weren't given that kind of training."
Elena overhead and smiled. "If you're interested, I could use an apprentice. It takes time to learn, but I think you'd be good at it."
Next, they visited the pack school where young wolves learned reading, writing, and pack history. The teacher, a gentle woman named Sarah, was clearly beloved by her students.
"We also have warriors, scouts, hunters, crafters, and those who maintain our territory," Dante continued. "You're not limited to one role. Many of our wolves do multiple jobs depending on what's needed."
They stopped at the training grounds, where Lyra was drilling a group of younger wolves in basic defensive moves. She waved enthusiastically when she saw them.
"This is where I spend most of my time," Dante said. "Every wolf in Nightshade learns to fight, regardless of rank. We've had too many losses over the years from wolves who couldn't defend themselves."
Aria felt a pang in her chest. If she'd known how to fight properly, the rogues wouldn't have nearly killed her. "I'd like to learn."
Dante's expression was approving. "Good. Lyra's already volunteered to train you personally. She's one of our best warriors." He paused. "But Aria, learning to fight doesn't mean you have to become a warrior. Some wolves learn for self-defense and find their calling elsewhere. There's no pressure."
The kindness in his words made her throat tight. In Silvermoon, pressure had been constant. Do this. Be that. Know your place. Here, she was being offered choices.
"I want to try different things," Aria said. "If that's allowed."
"More than allowed. Encouraged." Dante smiled. "Take your time figuring out where you fit. For now, why don't you split your days? Mornings with Elena learning healing, afternoons with Lyra learning defense. See what resonates with you."
As they continued the tour, pack members stopped to introduce themselves. Some were curious, others welcoming, but none looked at her with the disdain she'd grown accustomed to in Silvermoon. A few even knew her story, the rejection by Kade, and their sympathy was genuine rather than pitying.
"You're one of us now," an older wolf named Thomas told her. "What happened before doesn't matter here. What matters is what you do next."
By lunch time, Aria's head was spinning with names and information. Dante led her to the communal dining hall, a large open space where pack members gathered to eat and socialize. The atmosphere was warm and loud, filled with laughter and conversation.
So different from Silvermoon's formal, quiet meals where ranks ate separately.
"Sit with us," Lyra called, waving Aria over to a table where several young wolves were gathered. "Everyone, this is Aria. Be nice or I'll kick your asses in training."
The group laughed and made room. They peppered her with friendly questions, careful not to push when she didn't want to answer something. One wolf, a cheerful guy named Marcus, made her laugh with stories about Lyra's training methods.
"She's brutal," he said with mock horror. "Last week she made us run the obstacle course in wolf form while she threw pinecones at us."
"It builds reflexes!" Lyra protested, grinning.
For the first time in weeks, Aria felt something other than pain or determination. She felt almost... happy. Like maybe she could belong here. Like maybe this could become home.
After lunch, Dante pulled her aside. "There's one more thing we need to discuss. Officially, you're still a member of Silvermoon Pack. To fully join Nightshade, there's a ceremony. But given your situation with Kade, I wanted to make sure you're ready for what that means."
Aria's stomach tightened. "What does it mean?"
"Severing ties with Silvermoon completely. Kade would be informed, as a courtesy between Alphas. He might protest, might even demand your return, though he'd have no legal right since you came here of your own will." Dante's expression was serious. "I won't lie to you. It could cause tension between our packs. But I won't let that stop me from accepting you if this is what you want."
Aria thought about Silvermoon. About Maya, the only thing she'd miss. About Kade, who hadn't come looking for her, who probably didn't care that she was gone.
"I want to join Nightshade," she said firmly. "This is where I want to be."
Dante nodded, approval clear in his eyes. "Then we'll hold the ceremony in three days. That gives you time to be sure, and gives me time to send formal notification to Silvermoon."
As Aria walked back to her room later that evening, her mind was already made up. In three days, she would officially become a member of Nightshade Pack. She would have a new home, a new family, a new life.
And somewhere in Silvermoon, Kade would learn that the omega he'd rejected had moved on without him.
Part of her hoped it would hurt him, even just a little.
But mostly, she hoped he wouldn't care at all. Because she was done caring about what Kade Thornridge thought of her.
She had a new life to build.
The morning of the wedding dawned clear and beautiful, as if the Moon Goddess herself was blessing the union. Aria stood in her room, surrounded by the women who'd become her family. Elena was pinning flowers into her hair while Lyra fussed with the train of her dress."Stop fidgeting," Lyra scolded, though her eyes were bright with happy tears. "You're going to wrinkle the silk."The dress was simple but stunning. Flowing white silk that draped elegantly over her curves, with delicate silver embroidery along the hem and neckline. Maya's crescent moon pendant rested at her throat, and the bracelet from Dante's mother circled her wrist. On her finger, the moonstone engagement ring caught the light."You look like a dream," Elena said softly, stepping back to admire her work. "Dante's going to cry when he sees you.""I hope not. Then I'll cry, and my makeup will run," Aria laughed, but her own eyes were misty.A knock at the door, and Catherine poked her head in. In the two weeks since
Kade arrived at the neutral meeting point alone, as requested. The abandoned cabin on the border between territories was the perfect place for a secret meeting. His expression was wary but curious when he saw Aria, Dante, and a woman he didn't recognize."This better be important," Kade said, though his eyes lingered on Aria with barely concealed longing. "Your message said it was urgent.""It is," Dante said. "Kade, do you know Catherine Moore?"Kade's eyes narrowed as he studied the woman. "You were a healer in my pack. You disappeared three years ago, right after..." His voice trailed off."Right after Elena died," Catherine finished. "I didn't disappear, Alpha. I ran for my life."For the next hour, they laid out everything. Catherine's findings, Elena's notes, the inconsistencies in the attack, the financial records. Kade listened in silence, his expression growing darker with each revelation. When they finished, he sat completely still for a long moment."You're telling me Garre
The wedding preparations consumed Nightshade Pack with joyful chaos. Aria had insisted on keeping it simple, but the pack had other ideas. Everyone wanted to contribute something to celebrate their Alpha and future Luna.Aria was reviewing seating arrangements with Elena when a messenger arrived, breathless and urgent."Luna-to-be, there's a woman at the border requesting entry. She says her name is Catherine, and she needs to speak with you about Alpha Kade."Aria's stomach dropped. "Catherine? I don't know anyone by that name.""She says it's about his past. About Elena." The messenger shifted uncomfortably. "She seems... distressed."Aria exchanged glances with Elena, who nodded. "I'll come with you."At the border, they found a woman in her late twenties, thin and exhausted, with the haunted look of someone who'd been running for a long time. Her clothes were travel-worn, and she clutched a leather satchel like it contained something precious."Aria Blackwood?" the woman asked, he
Aria stood in front of her mirror, adjusting the emerald green dress Lyra had helped her pick out. It hugged her curves in all the right places, the color bringing out the amber in her eyes. Maya's pendant rested at her throat, a reminder of how far she'd come."You look stunning," Lyra said, practically bouncing with excitement. "Dante's going to lose his mind when he sees you.""Do you know what this is about?" Aria asked, trying to calm her racing heart."Maybe," Lyra said with a knowing grin. "But I'm sworn to secrecy. Just trust me when I say you're going to want to remember tonight for the rest of your life."Elena appeared in the doorway with a small wooden box. "Before you go, I have something for you. It belonged to Dante's mother."Inside was a delicate silver bracelet etched with moon phases. "Elena, I can't...""You can, and you will. Dante asked me to give it to you. His mother would have loved you, Aria. You're exactly what he needs." Elena fastened the bracelet around A
Three weeks after the battle, life in Nightshade had returned to a peaceful rhythm. Aria's wound had healed into a scar she wore with pride, a mark of the day she'd proven herself as both warrior and healer. The surrendered rogues had been distributed among the five packs, given probationary membership and a chance to rebuild their lives. It was working better than anyone expected. Turned out most rogues just wanted belonging, not war.Aria was in the garden behind the pack house, gathering herbs for Elena, when she heard raised voices from the front entrance."I don't care what protocol says. I need to see her. Now."That voice. Aria's blood ran cold. She knew that voice, even though she hadn't heard it in months.Kade.She hurried around the building to find Kade arguing with two Nightshade guards. He looked worse than she'd ever seen him. Wild-eyed, desperate, his clothes disheveled. He smelled of whiskey and desperation."Aria!" He spotted her and lunged forward. The guards immedi
The battlefield was chaos.Aria had never seen anything like it. Hundreds of wolves clashing in a valley outside River Valley territory, the sound of snarls and yelps filling the air. The metallic scent of blood was overwhelming. She stayed in human form initially, as planned. Warrior-healers fought when needed but prioritized treating the wounded. Elena had taught her well, prepare for the worst, hope for the best."Aria, with me!" Lyra shouted, already engaging two rogues who'd broken through the line.Aria shifted mid-run, her silver wolf form smaller but faster than most. She darted in, using the tactics Lyra had drilled into her. Don't engage directly, use speed and agility, go for weak points. She caught one rogue's hind leg in her jaws, tearing muscle. He yelped and turned on her, but Lyra took him down before he could strike. The teamwork was perfect, practiced."Behind you!" Marcus's voice in her mind through the pack bond.Aria spun just in time to avoid a massive grey rogue
