Chapter 2

Author: Simply So
Sophia's expression shifted. She rubbed the back of my hand and said in a low voice, "I'm sorry, honey. I was worried that you would get upset if you saw Ashton's corpse, so I arranged for him to be cremated yesterday."

I knew she didn't actually care if I got upset over seeing Ashton's corpse. She was just worried that I would notice that his heart had been removed from his chest.

Suppressing my hatred, I looked at the crooked red bracelet circling Sophia's wrist.

Ashton had given the bracelet to her. Sophia frequently suffered from insomnia before the accident, so Ashton asked one of his teachers to teach him how to make a bracelet. He then weaved one out of red string and mugwort, giving it to her after he was done.

Sophia had stared at the bracelet that couldn't be considered pretty in shock. Her mouth fell open, but she didn't say a word for a long time. She only accepted the bracelet when Ashton called out to her, carefully slipping it onto her wrist.

"Thank you, Ash," she said while hugging him. "I love it very much."

Only then did I realize that while Ashton had been worried about Sophia's insomnia, the reason that she was losing sleep in the first place was because she had been planning the car crash to make it look like an accident.

Sophia followed my line of sight and looked at the bracelet too. A complicated emotion flickered in her eyes before she covered the bracelet with her sleeve, saying, "I promise I'll do the same as you and spend the rest of my life missing Ash, honey."

I looked down and didn't say another word. The only thing that I was grateful for was that Ashton believed that Sophia loved him till the very end of his life.

However, I couldn't forget that she was the one who harmed him just because of that. I became determined to take revenge for him. I also planned to leave her since she was the culprit who hurt both of us.

…

Disliking the scent of disinfectant that was a constant presence in the hospital, Sophia took me home the next day.

Truth be told, Sophia was a wonderful wife if I didn't know about her malicious true character. She personally prepared my meals for me, thoughtfully remembering all of my dietary restrictions. Worried that I would develop PTSD, she also massaged and soaked my feet in water every night.

Three days after I returned home, she finally made up an excuse that there was an urgent matter at the company that needed her attention before leaving the house early in the morning.

She hadn't locked her phone in time, giving me a chance to catch a glimpse of the message that her lover, Harold Cox, had sent her.

"Micah keeps crying for his mother, Sophia. He refuses to calm down no matter how much I coax him."

Sophia had rushed to her other son, Micah Cox's, side without hesitation just because he missed her. Meanwhile, Ashton died before he could even see her for the last time.

I silently watched Sophia leave before making my way up to the third floor, standing in front of her study.

We had been married for five years. Using the excuse that even married couples needed their personal space, she had installed a passcode lock on the study door.

As expected, the door unlocked when I entered Harold's and Micah's birthdays. Their family portraits hung from all four walls of the spacious study.

There were other photos of when she was pregnant and giving birth. There were also photos of Micah's one-month birthday celebration, his first tooth, and his first step.

Sophia had recorded everything. Meanwhile, Ashton's pictures couldn't even fill a small photo album even though he had been alive for four years before his death.

I flipped open Sophia's diary that was sitting on the desk.

"May 20th. I told Harold that I had a surprise for him. Although I had expected him to be rendered speechless from excitement, I couldn't stop my tears from falling when I felt how he was shaking when he hugged me."

"January 23rd. I've become a mother. I named him Micah Cox. He's so small. When I held him in my arms, I was briefly overwhelmed with the feeling that I wanted to give everything that I had to him and his father. However, the doctor told me that Micah had inherited Harold's congenital heart disease."

"September 30th. I got married for Micah's sake. The groom wasn't Harold. I'll definitely be a good wife and mother, Harold."

I could sense her incredible determination when I noticed how hard she had pressed the pen into the paper when she wrote the last entry, the paper nearly tearing from the pressure.

I didn't attend the execution on the day that it was carried out. Instead, I visited Ashton's grave."I've finally avenged you, Ash," I said. "Everyone who hurt you has gotten what they deserved. Sophia and I are divorced now, but you don't have to worry about me being alone. She transferred all her assets to me. I'm planning to use the money to establish a foundation."The foundation will specialize in helping the families of those who lost children like you, who had their organs illegally removed. I miss you so much, Ash."…One year later, I was volunteering at an orphanage. When I was playing with the children, I noticed a familiar figure. He was sitting by himself in a corner. He kept his head down as he played with an old and broken plane model.I slowly approached him and crouched down. "Micah?" I called out softly.Micah looked up and scrutinized me. Finally, he said in a low voice, "I remember you, mister."A flurry of complicated emotions raged in my chest as I looke

There was a deep pain in Sophia's eyes. "I know that you and Ash will never forgive me no matter what I say or do," she said. "I'm the one who made those mistakes. I know that I'm paying for the consequences of my actions. I'll accept that you want to divorce me, but not now."Please give me a few more days. Allow me to do something for you and Ash one last time. I don't care if you believe me or not. I won't let the two of you down this time."Tears streamed down her face as she nodded at Ashton's tombstone, dripping onto the dirt beneath her feet. She straightened up before turning around and leaving.Sophia turned to look at me again when she was a short distance away, saying, "It's true that I had ulterior motives when I treated you and Ash well at the beginning, Gabriel. But slowly, my feelings began to change. I couldn't bear to sacrifice Ash and see you upset."But Micah's heart condition was deteriorating. Harold confronted me, asking if I planned to abandon them since I

As I gazed at Sophia's nearly flawless side profile, I thought about the beautiful dream that she had meticulously weaved for me and Ashton for the past few years. It was only after the dream was shattered did I realize that the world was actually one massive trap.Although Sophia didn't expose Harold's lies, she wasn't foolish enough to admit to his accusations. Thus, I didn't get the results that I was hoping for after the first court trial came to a close.I visited Ashton before the second trial, placing a bouquet of white lilies before his tombstone. As I gently brushed my fingers across his name, I couldn't help but think about how he had been alive and well as he stood before me not too long ago.He had hopped around in joy as we made plans to visit the beach during the holidays. Sophia and I had even bought a duck-themed swim ring, a swimsuit, and a pair of goggles for him.The holidays had arrived. Ashton should have been playing to his heart's content. He used to be so en

"I won't believe another word that comes out of your mouth," I said. "I'm going to call the police and hand the evidence over to them. I'm going to make you and your beloved Harold…"I pointed at Harold, who was still in shock at Sophia's sudden honesty and had no idea how to talk his way out of his predicament, before continuing, "Pay for the consequences of your actions!""Don't let him call the police!" Harold exclaimed, grabbing Sophia's arm in a death grip and shaking it wildly. "We'll definitely get locked behind bars if he hands the evidence over to the police! Get a grip, Sophia! You can die if you want to, but don't drag me down with you!"I slipped the stack of evidence into my bag, rose to my feet, and made my way toward the door.Sophia seemed to be deaf to Harold's words. She swatted him away and grabbed my wrist. Her voice was colored with pain and pleading when she said, "I let you and Ash down, Gabriel—"The wails of police sirens interrupted her before she could

"Stop being suspicious?" I spat. "Although the situation has already escalated to this point, you still intend to lie to me, Sophia. You orchestrated the car crash that Ash was in. You colluded with the doctor to lie to me. You stole Ash's heart and gave it to the son you had with Harold. "Did you really think I didn't know what was going on?"The color immediately drained from Sophia's face when I pulled out the stack of evidence and threw it at her.Realizing that the cat was out of the bag, Harold covered his mouth with his hand and stared at her in horror.Sophia stared in disbelief as she flipped through the evidence that included her conversation logs with Harold, Micah's medical records, surveillance footage that proved that she had been at the scene of the car accident, and even hospital records that proved that she had intentionally arranged my surgery. The evidence proved that I was already aware that she had lied to me for years.Sophia's breathing turned ragged. I was kneeling in the living room when Sophia and Harold rushed over to the house. I slowly brushed my fingers across Ashton's portrait, moving so gently as if I were afraid to hurt him.Ashton had a radiant smile on his face in the portrait. His eyes were crinkled into crescents.I had once made a vow to protect his smile for the rest of my life. I was going to protect him from all the evil in the world. However, I never would have guessed that the person who harbored the most malicious intentions toward him was none other than his beloved mother, who he believed loved him the most.Harold's face was pale. "Where's Micah, Gabriel? Where did you take him?" he demanded sharply.I didn't say a single word or stop what I was doing."Hand Micah over right now, Gabriel!" Harold exclaimed, his voice pitching. "Don't make me call the police! You won't get to be Sophia's husband anymore if you're convicted of abducting a child. You can also forget about staying in Crowglade!"Sophia's hu
