Chapter 5

作者: Washing Wheat
Charlie's POV

"You should give us a call if you don't feel well, alright? Do you hear that, Charlie?" Dad asked.

He wanted to say a few more words, but Mom was already hurrying him impatiently out of the hallway.

"Hurry up! We'll run into traffic if we don't leave now!"

The front door slammed shut with a bang.

My soul involuntarily hovered toward them, crowding into the car. I pressed myself against the window as the car drove off, staring at the passing scenery with wide-eyed wonder and feeling a deep sense of novelty.

After all, for the past five years, Mom had hardly ever taken me out.

I couldn't help but feel that everything outside was truly wonderful.

Declan fell asleep with his head in Mom's lap as she stroked his head affectionately.

I looked at the scene before me, feeling so envious that my heart clenched. I couldn't help but wonder if Mom would have stroked my head so affectionately if I had behaved well.

It was a long drive, but they finally arrived at Grandma and Grandpa's house, where the two had already been waiting outside for quite some time.

Grandma frowned and peered into the back seat as soon as they got out of the car. "Where is Charlie? You didn't bring him with you again?"

Mom responded coldly as she unloaded the luggage, replying, "He didn't want to come along."

I hovered nearby, my eyes widening in surprise as I waved my hands repeatedly at Grandma and Grandpa. "T-That's not true! I wasn't the one who refused to come!"

Grandma shot Mom a reproachful look and sighed. "I doubt Charlie was the one who didn't want to come. You just didn't want to bring him, did you?"

Mom offered no rebuttal, simply carrying the luggage inside the house in silence.

Grandma followed Mom inside, continuing to lecture her.

"I know you don't like Charlie. You had postpartum depression when he was born, and you thought he cried too much, threw tantrums, and wasn't good or compliant. You always felt that the difficult period was Charlie's fault.

"Have you forgotten that Charlie was just a nursing infant back then? What could he possibly understand back then, Francine?"

"How dare you ask me that!" It seemed a nerve had been struck in Mom.

She turned around abruptly, her eyes instantly turning bloodshot as she yelled at Grandma, "Why was Declan so obedient ever since he was young, then? I gave birth to both of them, but Declan is sweet and understanding, showing concern for me from a young age.

"What about Charlie, huh? He smashed the neighbor's windows at three and beat up his kindergarten classmates at five! He's nothing but a menace! He was born solely to torture me!"

I was stunned. It turned out that, even way back then, I was already a menace in Mom's eyes.

Mom was crying uncontrollably as she spoke, her voice cracking with emotion. "How could I not care about Charlie when both of them are my children? I'm just so angry… I'm so mad at myself for failing to raise him right. I'm angry that he couldn't be more like Declan…"

Grandpa and Grandma exchanged a glance and let out a long sigh.

Dad walked over and wrapped an arm around Mom's shoulders to comfort her. "There, there now, Francine. We'll raise Charlie together from now on. He'll definitely become our well-behaved and understanding son once he grows up."

Declan also took Mom's hand, wiping away her tears as he said, "Please don't cry, Mom. I'll teach Charlie and make sure he behaves well from now on."

Mom held Declan close, nodding through her sobs.

Just then, the phone in Dad's pocket suddenly went off with a harsh ring.

I suddenly felt a shiver run through my body.

Dad answered the phone, but before he could say a word, Aunt Jackie's terrified scream came through the line.

"You have to come back this instant, Ethan! Something happened to Charlie!"

Dad's car keys fell to the ground with a sharp clatter.

Charlie's POVMom dropped to her knees, weeping uncontrollably. "I-I'm so sorry, Charlie; I really am. I know I was wrong. I truly realized it now. I'm begging you, Charlie—please forgive me."She repented repeatedly, begging me to forgive her.I gazed at her quietly, feeling neither hatred nor love in my heart. All that remained was a quiet, hollow emptiness. I spoke gently, my voice drifting like a whisper carried by the wind. "Mom…"She abruptly raised her head and looked at me with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.I looked into her eyes and said deliberately, "Thank you for bringing me into this world, Mom, but since I've returned this life of mine to you, I just hope that if there is a next time, I won't be your son anymore."Upon hearing that, the expectation on Mom's face froze, then shattered. She didn't want this outcome. She wanted my forgiveness and the salvation of her soul, but what I gave her was the most absolute, most brutal severing of ties."T-That can't be!" M

Charlie's POVMom broke down completely after reading the last line on the last page. "If I die, will Mom finally stop hating me?"She let out a pained scream so broken that it no longer sounded human. She held onto the diary desperately, as if it were the last lifeline she had left, yet it burned in her hands like a scorching piece of metal. She was completely overwhelmed with remorse, grief, and despair at that moment.…I had a very simple funeral. It was overcast and drizzling, as though the sky were mourning me too. They were granted a brief release under the guard of two police officers to say their final goodbyes. Charlie's POVDad was unable to continue speaking, crying like a child despite being a grown man.Having heard Mom and Dad's account, the police officer remained silent for a long time before he let out a heavy sigh. "You're both so foolish! What you did wasn't teaching him a lesson—it was intentional injury!"He gestured to the police officers behind him and said, "Take them back to the station and initiate a formal investigation."Two young police officers walked forward and took out their handcuffs, locking Mom and Dad's wrists with a cold, metallic click. It was only then that the reality of what they had done truly hit them. This wasn't a "punishment game" to be called off at will. It was a crime lasting five years, capable of destroying a person's life forever—and I was the only innocent victim in it all.Mom and Dad were taken away. The house suddenly became empty, with no one left except Aunt Jackie and Declan, who was shivering in terror. The police cordoned off my ro

She muttered to herself, "T-That's impossible… He was obviously faking it… He hadn't received an injection in a month, so he should have recovered by now…"The police officer frowned, immediately catching the key detail in her words. "What do you mean by injections? You're familiar with this medication?" Mom's lips trembled uncontrollably, leaving her unable to utter a single word.Aunt Jackie had already shot to her feet in shock when she heard the police officer mention long-term injections of a muscle relaxant. She stared fixedly at Dad and Mom, her eyes full of questions and disbelief. "Ethan? Francine?"Aunt Jackie's voice trembled as she asked, "What does the officer mean by muscle relaxant injections? Didn't Charlie break his legs when he was young? Have you been lying to me?"Dad lowered his head and gri

How could anything have happened to Charlie? He was fine this morning!"Aunt Jackie broke down crying on the other end of the phone. "I'm not lying, Francine! I brought him his lunch and called out to him, but he didn't respond. I pushed the door open and saw him lying there on the floor, his body completely cold…"Mom's voice grew shrill.
