Chapter 4

مؤلف: Washing Wheat
Charlie's POV

Dad turned to Declan, who was sitting there silently in fear, and said gently, "Charlie won't need those injections anymore, Declan. You don't have to keep pretending to be sick. You and Charlie can both put the wheelchairs aside and live like normal kids again. What do you think, Declan?"

Declan's eyes instantly lit up as he nodded eagerly. "Is it true? Do we really not have to stay in wheelchairs anymore?"

Upon seeing how happy Declan was, Mom finally nodded reluctantly and said, "Yes."

She quickly added, "I'm mostly doing this out of pity for Declan. That brat Charlie is completely hopeless, as far as I'm concerned."

Dad smiled helplessly, let the matter drop, and ushered everyone to the dining table. "Let's have dinner now. I'll go get Charlie."

Mom stopped him and snapped, "Why bother calling him? He doesn't deserve to eat since he's learned to deceive people! He should just go hungry tonight!"

Dad let out a sigh, sat back down at the table helplessly, and dropped the subject.

I hovered to the side, watching Mom serve Declan food with care. I watched the relieved smiles on Dad's and Declan's faces and the heartwarming scene of the three of them as a family.

I felt a sharp pang in my chest, leaving it aching and bitter. I wouldn't have to get those injections or use a wheelchair from now on, but it didn't really matter as I was already dead.

I looked down at my translucent hands and squeezed them lightly. I couldn't grip anything at all.

Late at night, the living room was entirely dark, and both Mom and Dad had gone back to their rooms.

It was then that my bedroom door was quietly cracked open. It was Declan.

He slid a small piece of cake wrapped in a napkin through the gap and whispered, "You didn't have dinner tonight, so I brought you this, Charlie. It's the blueberry cupcake Mom bought me. It's really good."

There was no response in the room. Declan probably thought I was asleep, so he gently closed the door and returned to his bedroom.

I looked at the cupcake on the floor and whispered to myself, "Thank you, Declan…"

The following morning, just as dawn was breaking, Dad and Mom packed their suitcases, getting ready to head out on a long trip with Declan.

Mom helped Declan into his coat and said gently, "We're going to spend the next few days at Grandma and Grandpa's place. Grandma has even prepared your favorite ham hock soup, Declan."

Declan sensibly tugged Mom's sleeve and asked softly, "I-Is Charlie not coming with us?"

Mom paused what she was doing and said nothing, her expression darkening.

Dad furrowed his brow and asked hesitantly, "Do you really think it's fine for us to leave Charlie alone while we're gone for two days? He's still in a wheelchair. What if something happens to him while he's home alone?"

Mom suddenly raised her voice, speaking with absolute certainty. "Charlie is already ten years old! What could possibly happen to him? You seem to have forgotten something. He's been off his medication for a month now, so his legs healed a long time ago!

"He's been sitting in that wheelchair every day this past month just to put on an act for us! He doesn't pick up good habits at such a young age, and only learned how to deceive people!"

I hovered by their side, anxious to explain myself. "It's not like that, Mom… I wasn't faking it. I didn't receive those injections, but my legs still couldn't move. I-I really wasn't lying…"

My voice was nothing more than a weightless murmur, incapable of disturbing even the slightest ripple in the air.

Mom, Dad, and Declan neither heard me nor saw me.

Dad sighed helplessly, a flicker of worry flashing across his eyes.

Mom, on the other hand, quickly packed everything up and pulled Declan along, preparing to leave.

Dad took a few bills out of his wallet before leaving, set them on the dining table, and weighed them down with a teacup.

He then went over to my bedroom door and knocked gently. "Your mother and I are taking Declan out for a couple of days, Charlie, so be good by yourself at home. There's money on the dining table, and Aunt Jackie will bring you some food in a little while."

Charlie's POVMom dropped to her knees, weeping uncontrollably. "I-I'm so sorry, Charlie; I really am. I know I was wrong. I truly realized it now. I'm begging you, Charlie—please forgive me."She repented repeatedly, begging me to forgive her.I gazed at her quietly, feeling neither hatred nor love in my heart. All that remained was a quiet, hollow emptiness. I spoke gently, my voice drifting like a whisper carried by the wind. "Mom…"She abruptly raised her head and looked at me with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.I looked into her eyes and said deliberately, "Thank you for bringing me into this world, Mom, but since I've returned this life of mine to you, I just hope that if there is a next time, I won't be your son anymore."Upon hearing that, the expectation on Mom's face froze, then shattered. She didn't want this outcome. She wanted my forgiveness and the salvation of her soul, but what I gave her was the most absolute, most brutal severing of ties."T-That can't be!" M

Charlie's POVMom broke down completely after reading the last line on the last page. "If I die, will Mom finally stop hating me?"She let out a pained scream so broken that it no longer sounded human. She held onto the diary desperately, as if it were the last lifeline she had left, yet it burned in her hands like a scorching piece of metal. She was completely overwhelmed with remorse, grief, and despair at that moment.…I had a very simple funeral. It was overcast and drizzling, as though the sky were mourning me too. A few people who showed up—Aunt Jackie, Grandma, Grandpa, and Declan, who was shaken up and frightened.Dad and Mom were there as well. They were granted a brief release under the guard of two police officers to say their final goodbyes. Charlie's POVDad was unable to continue speaking, crying like a child despite being a grown man.Having heard Mom and Dad's account, the police officer remained silent for a long time before he let out a heavy sigh. "You're both so foolish! What you did wasn't teaching him a lesson—it was intentional injury!"He gestured to the police officers behind him and said, "Take them back to the station and initiate a formal investigation."Two young police officers walked forward and took out their handcuffs, locking Mom and Dad's wrists with a cold, metallic click. It was only then that the reality of what they had done truly hit them. This wasn't a "punishment game" to be called off at will. It was a crime lasting five years, capable of destroying a person's life forever—and I was the only innocent victim in it all.Mom and Dad were taken away. The house suddenly became empty, with no one left except Aunt Jackie and Declan, who was shivering in terror. The police cordoned off my ro

Charlie's POVThough the police officer spoke calmly, every word struck Dad's and Mom's hearts like a crushing blow.Mom's eyes widened in sheer horror and disbelief. She muttered to herself, "T-That's impossible… He was obviously faking it… He hadn't received an injection in a month, so he should have recovered by now…"The police officer frowned, immediately catching the key detail in her words. "What do you mean by injections? You're familiar with this medication?" Mom's lips trembled uncontrollably, leaving her unable to utter a single word.Aunt Jackie had already shot to her feet in shock when she heard the police officer mention long-term injections of a muscle relaxant. She stared fixedly at Dad and Mom, her eyes full of questions and disbelief. "Ethan? Francine?"Aunt Jackie's voice trembled as she asked, "What does the officer mean by muscle relaxant injections? Didn't Charlie break his legs when he was young? Have you been lying to me?"Dad lowered his head and gri

Charlie's POVAunt Jackie's hysterical screaming sounded on the other end of the line, sounding thick with tears and completely incoherent. "You have to come back now, Ethan! C-Charlie is dead!"All the strength seemed to drain Dad, and his lips trembled so much that he couldn't even utter a single word.Mom snatched the phone away and yelled into the receiver, "What nonsense are you talking about? How could anything have happened to Charlie? He was fine this morning!"Aunt Jackie broke down crying on the other end of the phone. "I'm not lying, Francine! I brought him his lunch and called out to him, but he didn't respond. I pushed the door open and saw him lying there on the floor, his body completely cold…"Mom's voice grew shrill. "That's impossible! He must be faking it! He's lying to us again! He just wants to force us to come home! Dad asked. He wanted to say a few more words, but Mom was already hurrying him impatiently out of the hallway. "Hurry up! We'll run into traffic if we don't leave now!"The front door slammed shut with a bang.My soul involuntarily hovered toward them, crowding into the car. I pressed myself against the window as the car drove off, staring at the passing scenery with wide-eyed wonder and feeling a deep sense of novelty. After all, for the past five years, Mom had hardly ever taken me out.I couldn't help but feel that everything outside was truly wonderful.Declan fell asleep with his head in Mom's lap as she stroked his head affectionately.I looked at the scene before me, feeling so envious that my heart clenched.
