Pain usually represent the weakness of one's body, the limit to which something's pushed. There's always a delicate point after which softness of delicacy deforms into a form that could never be reformed. A point after which everything collides and turns everything into a pile of dust. A sole rememberance of souvenir, a soft touch of alluring darkness. 

Ezra's eyes represented that darkness. 

Barely noticeable yet not something which could be easily missed.
