Chapter 8
DAHLIA “Why are they suddenly here?” Seeing them at that moment, the realization of what I've been tolerating all in the name of love for Desmond flashed on my mind. I had completely forgotten that they had a key to my home. Desmond had given it to them in the past. I never had an issue with it, because I was so focused on being a good wife and daughter in-law to them. But thinking of it now, that was so stupid of me. “Dahlia….I didn't want to come here today, but I needed some cash. Desmond didn't give me any, can you help me out?” Anita, Desmond's younger sister asked, holding my hand. Mind you, I was still standing outside the door. “I need money too, Dahlia…the allowances you send me are barely enough these days,” Frank, his brother added. “You should increase our allowances too. It's barely enough,” Gideon, Desmond's father added. “Dahlia dear…Can you take me to the hospital later, that's….” Martha was speaking, but then I cut her off, fed up and tired of being treated like an ATM machine. “Can you all step aside?” I pulled my hand away from their grasps and walked into the living room. They all followed. “You do know you were rude to mother just now, Dahlia. How could you cut her off like that?” Frank confronted me, the moment I settled down on the couch. I looked up at him, then scoffed. My reaction seemed totally unexpected. In the past, I was the perfect ass licking daughter in-law. But at that moment, I was so pissed off that I didn't care what they thought of me. “You think you're all high and mighty just because you pay us and few dollar allowances each month? You think I'll let you disrespect us this way?” Frank kept ranting, insistently challenging me. “Let it go, Frank,” Anita grabbed him and tried pulling him away from me. But then he flung her away like she weighed nothing. I gasped. “Are you shocked?” He stared at me. “That's exactly how the women in this family are treated! Desmond has been so damn soft with you that you forgot your place and think you can disrespect us!” He yelled, grabbing onto my collar. All this time, Desmond's parents stood there. None saying a word. “Listen Frank, bark from now till tomorrow. You still won't get a penny from me. And if you dare raise your hands on me. I swear you'll rot in jail…ungrateful pig,” I retorted, not hiding my anger and disgust. I made eye contact with Anita who was sprawled on the floor, clutching onto her head. I had no sympathy for her, they were all disgusting to me. “There is food in the fridge. You can heat it up and eat before you leave,” I told Martha, pointing at the fridge, then turned around to walk into the bedroom. They all seemed so shocked by my sudden attitude that they didn't move a muscle. They simply stood watching me like I had lost my mind. I walked away and was almost out of the living room, when I felt someone grab me, turning around, it was Frank. “You!” He raised his hand and before I could utter a word, it landed on my face. The moment his hand met my face, every single negative emotion that had been drowning me the entire day came crashing down on me with full force. “You bastard!” I clenched my fist, and landed a punch right on his lips. It cut and began bleeding. Gideon screeched and quickly rushed over to his son. “Listen, all of you. I have put up with your nonsense for too long. I won't tolerate it again. If you need money so badly, work hard and earn it! Or ask your son for it!” I fired. Walked away and slammed the bedroom door shut. “What a bunch of ingrates!” I kicked off my shoes and slumped myself on the bed and broke into another round of sobs. Over five years of my life have been a lie. The ever so loving in-laws I felt lucky to have were nothing but pretenders. All they wanted was to suck me dry, till I go bankrupt. “Why am I just realizing this now?” I cried. “You're a fool, Dahlia,” I told myself over and over again. In the midst of my crash out, my phone rang, it was Desmond. Staring at my phone, I felt like smashing it on the wall, but then I held back. I can't crash out on him yet. I can't. I kept reminding myself. I answered the call and didn't bother to utter a word. Desmond's heavy breathing filled my ears. “Dahl. I'm sorry. I don't think I can come home tonight,” he began. I kept shut, waiting to hear what he had to say. “Anita just called me, my mum suddenly fell sick. I'll be sleeping over at their place tonight. My mum needs me.” His lie sounded so genuine and believable that I almost doubted if the greedy people in the living room were even there in the first place. “Say something, Dahl, please…Things have been rocky between us these few days, I wanted nothing more than to resolve things with you the moment I get home today. But things turned out this way. I'll buy a proper apology gift on my way home tomorrow morning. Please, baby,” his voice was so calm and suiting. “It's alright, Desmond. Go to mother. I have no problem. Call me when you get there, so I can speak to her, I'm really worried,” I faked a sob. “Why is she always falling sick, oh my gosh. Maybe take her to the hospital. Take good care of mother, please,” I kept sobbing. “Don't cry, Dahl. I'll take good care of her, you have nothing to worry about,” Desmond assured me, before finally hanging up. “So, all these years. This has been a lie!” I have lost count of the number of times Desmond pulled this particular stunt of his mum or other members of his family needing him urgently and each time, I completely fell for it. “Your days of playing with my emotions are finally over, Desmond. It's my turn now,” I declared. First, I need to speak with the people in my living room. Please, read, vote your precious gems, comment on the chapters, drop reviews and if you find this book really appealing, gift me ❤️ Happy Reading, Sweethearts!!
Chapter 145RONAN “Everyone is trying to help here, Ronan. You don't have to shut her up like that,” Dahlia retorted from the bed, her eyes settling on me.I bobbed my head, perfectly understanding what she meant.“I think Ivana is right,” She continued.“The more time we waste here, the harder it becomes. Who knows by the time you three are done analysing the odds, another life would have been lost…”“What do you suggest we do then?” Brandon cut her off.“I think Gavin should act like he has something to discuss with his father. Call him right now, and ask which hospital he has gone to. That way, Ronan's grandfather wouldn't hurt him yet, at least not while he knows his son knows his location. Then Gavin and Brandon can show up there, and find a way to get him home….”“And Ronan?” Gavin was the one to speak now.“Don't tell me you're sending us out and shielding your husband from harm. Don't forget his family caused all this…”“And you killed my father,” Ivana was quick to shut him
Chapter 144RONAN“That means both your father and mine are in danger right now. This is bad…” “Do you have any idea where they planned to meet up?” I asked, resting my gaze on a barely calm Gavin. His eyes was cast down at his feet, he had his head bowed and looked really guilty and pitiful. He shook his head.“He never mentioned it. And he left in a haste too…”“Listen Gavin, my dad is already gone. I won't be able to bear another loss. It's would be best if you think harder and try to remember where they are meeting up,” Ivana intervened, rising to her feet and coming to stand right in front of Gavin.“I told you he didn't tell me where,” Gavin grumbled.“Then tell us what you heard. You're fond of eavesdropping on your father. Clearly tiubihewrd something that would serve as a hint….” She narrowed her eyes on him.I just stood by the side, giving her space to do her thing.“Ivana, you…” Dahlia was about to intervene but Brandon and I were quick to shut her up.“Let her,” I mumble
Chapter 143DAHLIA “Ro…Ronan…” I stuttered, looking right behind him only to see Gavin pointing a gun at himRonan turned around to know the cause of my concern. He seemed quite taken aback as he took in Gavin's figure.“What the hell are you doing?” I screamed at him, every inch of me shaking, my heart thumping.“Shut up, Dahlia. Or I won't mind shooting you first. Afterall you brought the Knights into this place. You made them find uncle! You made them kill him when he never did anything wrong and now what? You suddenly want us to welcome someone from that family into our home with open arms. Every other person might be open to accepting him but not me….”“I'll leave with him now, Gavin. Put the gun down…” “It's too late, Dahlia. It's too damn late. My uncle is already dead. I have nothing to lose…”“He isn't your father, Gavin. Stop overacting and put down the gun,” Brandon spoke from behind.“You and I know I was closer to him than you'd ever be. You and I know I had a bad relat
Chapter 142BRANDON Gavin had absolutely no right to confront me that way. I lost my father while he still had his. I was hurting badly but masked it under a fake bravado all to make Ivana keep calm. The both of us can't hurt at the same time. One person had to stay sane to keep the other from going insane and as her older brother I knew I had to be the sane one. Yet Gavin in his twisted mind blatantly concluded that I didn't feel a bit hurt by my father's death. Which son whose father was present his whole life, which son whose father was ever so willing to sacrifice everything for him wouldn't be hurt by his passing.“Don't act all hasty and end up hurting yourself, Gavin. You'd regret it. Take it or leave it,” I told him. “Let's go, Ronan,” I turned to Ronan who had his gaze trailed on me. His eyes held pity and it was one thing I didn't want.“No need to have pity on me, Ronan,” I mumbled, walking over to Ivana's room and unlocking the door.Gavin stood behind me staring at me f
Chapter 141RONANWhen Brandon and I rushed into that room and found Dahlia lying there on the bed, staring at us in confusion. I felt relieved. I visibly shook, trying hard to calm my thumping heart. Brandon and I exchanged glances seeing them lying down there.I rested my gaze on Dahlia's face, trying to figure her out, trying to read her to know what she was up to. But she had a confused expression on her face and even held onto a lamp, staring at both Brandon and I as if wondering why we had rushed into the room and startled them like that.Once we left the room, Brandon locked the door. Before we headed back to the next room.“I don't trust Ivana. They're definitely up to something,” he mumbled.“I don't trust Dahlia right now, either….” “We should keep an eye on them,” I told him, grabbing onto the door handle, about to walk out when he called out my name, making me halt.“Are you sure your grandfather is the one behind all of this?” He asked.I nodded my head.I had done my fi
Chapter 140DAHLIAIvana and I obediently got in the bed like Ronan and Brandon wanted. I wanted to have a conversation with Ivana and to do that, I needed them to leave the room.I wasn't just going to let myself be locked up in some building all in the name of keeping me safe. I've foughtt a lot of battles my whole life. I wasn't was damsel in distress that needed protection. I could be vicious and cunning, it all depends on the situation and the person. Ronan seemed to have forgotten I am a business woman who has faced life threatening situations. He seemed to have forgotten that I took poison and survived it.If I was meant to die early, I would have long died when all these happened. I somehow survived it all and now because of some stupid old man, he wants me to hide. I could only shake my head. I wasn't going to do that. I'd instead confront the old man. “You don't want to stay hidden like some damsel, right?” Ivana asked, the moment the door shut.I shook my head. “Never, I
