CHAPTER 14

The morning light barely touched my desk when I arrived.

Not that it mattered. Shadows clung to the office corners anyway. Some were natural. Some… not.

Ivy was already there. Not openly confrontational. No, she was subtle. Leaning casually against the hallway railing, phone in hand, smile faint but sharp. Watching. Waiting.

I stopped mid-step. Heart thudding. Fingers gripping my bag strap like it could hold me together.

“Good morning, Maya,” she said lightly. Smiled too easily. Too intentionally.

“Good morning,” I replied. My voice was firmer than I expected. Protective instincts kicked in before I even thought about it.

Her eyes lingered on me. Long. Measuring. Predatory.

“You’re getting bold,” she said softly. “Not many last this long.”

I swallowed. Bold? Or stupid? Hard to tell. Probably both.

Before I could respond, Reign appeared. Quiet. Dominant. Protective. Dangerous warmth radiating from him like a shield I couldn’t resist leaning into.

He didn’t speak immediately. Just stood behind me, one hand brushing the back of my chair, subtle but grounding.

“You’re early,” Ivy said, voice light, almost teasing.

“Focused,” Reign replied calmly. Edge in his tone. Warning.

Ivy tilted her head. “Of course. Focused. Always so admirable.”

I clenched my fists under the desk. Heart racing. Her words weren’t friendly. Not one bit.

Reign’s gaze flicked to mine. Encouraging. Protective. Dangerous. I nodded subtly.

The morning dragged.

Emails, reports, corrections. Henderson follow-ups. Minor crises. Office whispers. All of it amplified by Ivy’s presence.

She didn’t need to say much. Just a look. A tilt of her head. A smirk. Enough to make the tension climb.

I tried to focus. Tried to block it out. Tried to… breathe.

But shadows from yesterday’s revelations lingered. Reign’s past. His mistakes. His secrets. And now… Ivy’s encroachment. Personal. Professional. Emotional.

Around midday, Reign pulled me into his office. The door was closed this time. Personal space. Boundary lines blurred, heartlines stretched.

“Ivy’s here for a reason,” he said quietly, voice low and intimate. Dangerous. “She’s probing. Testing. Finding weaknesses.”

“Yes,” I whispered. “I noticed.”

He leaned back in his chair, gaze distant. Vulnerable, just slightly. “Some weaknesses… are inherited. Old. Shadows of the past. People carry them everywhere. And some… you can’t avoid.”

I shivered, unsure if it was the temperature or his words. Something in his tone made the air heavy. Personal. Raw.

“And that affects… me?” I asked softly.

“Everyone around me,” he admitted. “Eventually.”

The admission… small. But it hit harder than any storm Ivy could conjure.

Ivy didn’t wait long to escalate.

She cornered me in the conference room. Not aggressive. Not yet. Calculated. Casual. Innocuous. Dangerous.

“New here,” she said softly, voice honey over steel. “Clever. Determined. But cleverness isn’t enough. Not here.”

I swallowed, squaring my shoulders. “I’m learning. Quickly.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Good. You’ll need to. Because knowing isn’t the same as surviving. Not in this office. Not with him.”

I stiffened. With him? She meant Reign. Protective. Dangerous. Warm. My pulse spiked.

Before I could respond, Reign appeared in the doorway. Silent. Watching. Protective. Edge in his stance.

“You’ll excuse us,” he said, voice calm but lethal.

Ivy tilted her head. Smirked. “Of course. Enjoy the shadows.”

Her heels clicked away like warnings, echoing down the hallway.

The rest of the afternoon was a blur of tension.

Reign stayed close by. Observing. Correcting gently. Guiding subtly. Protective. Encouraging. Dangerous warmth lingering in his proximity.

I focused. Fixed errors. Corrected numbers. Responded to enquiries. Every movement precise. Controlled. My heartbeat frantic beneath it all.

And I realised… the office wasn’t just a place for work.

It was a battlefield.

Ivy was testing me. Reign was testing me. And I was testing myself.

Later, Reign asked me to stay after the board members left.

He leaned against his desk, eyes shadowed, calculating. “You noticed things today,” he said softly. “About her. About the way people behave. About… me.”

“Yes,” I admitted, voice low. “I noticed. Everything.”

“Good,” he said, leaning closer. “That awareness… that’s rare. Not everyone sees the patterns. Not everyone survives them. And not everyone… understands me.”

I swallowed hard. His words pressed against my chest. Dangerous. Thrilling. Personal.

“I… I want to understand,” I whispered.

He smiled faintly. Almost sad. Almost relieved. “And you will. But it takes time. And trust. Careful, tentative trust.”

By evening, Ivy had left again, but her shadow lingered.

I gathered my things slowly. Mind spinning. Chest tight. Pulse hammering.

Every glance. Every whisper. Every subtle word carried weight.

Reign approached me as I headed to the elevator.

“You did well today,” he said softly. “Better than well. You kept your composure under pressure. Even with… her shadows looming.”

I exhaled shakily. “Thank you… sir.”

He nodded. Close enough that I felt warmth brush my arm. Protective. Dangerous. Intimate.

“Rest tonight,” he added. “Tomorrow… expect more challenges. Shadows always return.”

The elevator doors closed. Silence enveloped me.

But the echo of Ivy’s presence, Reign’s words, and the shadows of his past pressed on my mind.

I leaned against the elevator wall. Heart racing. Thoughts spinning.

Ivy was more than a threat. Reign’s past was more than a burden.

And me… I was in the middle of it all.

I had to survive. I had to learn. I had to adapt.

But deep down… I knew.

It wasn’t just about surviving the office.

It was about navigating hearts. Secrets. Shadows. Desire.

And I was already dangerously involved.

Phones ringing, keyboards clacking, low murmur of voices. But it felt hollow. I was on high alert. Every shadow a threat. Every whisper a trap.I made my way to my desk. Laptop open, coffee in hand. Ready. Waiting.Reign appeared beside me before I could sit.“Are you okay?” he ask

CHAPTER 23 The office was quiet when I arrived the next morning. Too quiet.I didn’t like quiet. Quiet meant someone was planning, watching, waiting. And with Ivy in the wings, quiet was dangerous.I made my way to my desk, heels clicking softly against the polished floor. My hands felt clammy. Not from nerves. Not entirely. From the lingering heat of yesterday. From Reign. From whatever that connection was between us now—magnetic, volatile, unspoken.I slid into my chair and opened my laptop. Nothing unusual. Yet every email, every notification, felt like a potential trap. Then I felt it—him.Reign.Across the office. Standing by the window, arms crossed, gaze fixed somewhere outside. But I knew he wasn’t looking at the skyline. Not really. He was aware of me. Always aware. That was part of the problem. Or part of the thrill.I sighed. Focus. Focus. I had work to do. I had to stay sharp. But then my phone buzzed. A message. From him.Meet me. Conference room. Now.I groaned. He was

CHAPTER 22 Okay.Something was wrong.I felt it before I saw it. That prickling under my skin. That quiet wrongness in the air. The kind that doesn’t shout. It whispers. And whispers are worse.I’d barely settled at my desk when my inbox exploded.Meeting rescheduled.Report missing.Urgent board request.Client escalation.None of it made sense. Not together. Not all at once.I glanced up.Reign was already on his feet. Not rushed. Not panicked. But alert. Like a predator that had just scented blood. Our eyes met.Just one look.He knew too. Here we go.I swallowed and stood, grabbing my tablet. “Something’s off,” I said quietly as I approached him.“Yes,” he replied. Calm. Too calm. “And it’s not accidental.”Of course it wasn’t.Ivy.She hadn’t come at us loud. Not this time. She’d gone subtle. Strategic. Surgical. The worst kind.“Conference room,” he said. “Now.”We walked fast. Side by side. Not touching. But close enough that I felt his presence like a shield. Like gravity.Th

CHAPTER 21 The next morning, the office felt different. Not loud. Not chaotic. Not even tense in the usual way.It was… charged.Every glance felt sharper. Every movement seemed weighted with intention.I could feel it the moment I walked in.Reign was at his desk, standing over a report like it demanded his entire attention. But when our eyes met across the office, I saw it. That subtle softening, the way his posture shifted for just a fraction of a second. Just enough to make my stomach twist.I tried to focus on my own desk, but it was impossible. The memory of yesterday—the lounge, his words, the way he had looked at me—lingered in every corner of my mind.Even Evan seemed to notice. He passed by my desk, smirk barely suppressed.“Morning, trouble,” he said, leaning casually against my cubicle wall. “Or should I say… chaos magnet?”I groaned. “Evan.”He winked. “Relax. I’m just saying… The guy’s staring at you like he’s about to rewrite the rules of gravity.”I slammed my laptop

CHAPTER 20 The lounge was quiet.Almost too quiet.Every small noise—the hum of the fridge, the faint clatter of cups from the distant kitchen—felt amplified. My chest tightened. My heart raced.Every time I glanced at Reign, it was like the world shrank. He didn’t speak at first. Just leaned there, calm, composed, and impossibly intimidating. Even when he didn’t try, he commanded the room.“You need to know something,” he finally said.I blinked. “About… Ivy?”He shook his head slowly. “About today. About you. About… everything.”The word 'everything' hung in the air. Heavy. Dangerous.“I…” My voice faltered. “I don’t know what to say.”“You don’t need to say anything,” he replied. Stepping closer, but not too close. Not yet. “Just… listen.”And I did.“Today,” he started, voice low and deliberate, “I realised just how much they’ve underestimated you. Ivy, the board, even some colleagues—they see you as inexperienced. As someone who can be pushed around. But you… you’re different. S

CHAPTER 19The rest of the morning passed in a blur.I tried to focus. I really did.Emails. Reports. Presentations. Numbers were dancing across the screen like they wanted to mock me.But every time I typed a sentence, my mind wandered.Back to Ivy.Back to Reign.Back to that moment in the boardroom when he had chosen me.I shouldn’t feel the echo of it still thumping in my chest.I shouldn’t have noticed how the space between us seemed electric.I shouldn’t—A knock on the glass wall of my office snapped me out of my thoughts.“Maya, do you have a minute?”It was Evan.I gestured for him to come in.He closed the door behind him, leaning casually against the edge of my desk. His usual smirk was gone. Something more serious in his eyes.“Are you okay?” he asked.I hesitated. “I… I think so. It’s just…” I waved vaguely at the chaos of the morning, at the lingering tension in the office. “It’s a lot.”Evan nodded. “Yeah. Ivy doesn’t play fair. You already know that. And today? She wen
