Chapter 4

Author: Berry Custard
Hannah had given Samuel shares in Garber Corporation to make up for Tyler's intrusive presence at the beginning of their marriage. Samuel hadn't thought he'd end up using the shares to his advantage.

After signing the share transfer agreement, he returned to the bungalow.

Fresh tears filled his red-rimmed eyes as he took in the traces Benjamin had left behind in every corner of the house. He held the box of ashes closer to him, and unable to stop himself, he sobbed openly.

"Why are you still crying, Samuel? Are you still mad at me?" At that moment, a voice rang out behind him. Before he could register who it belonged to, Hannah pulled him into an embrace.

Samuel stared at her loving expression. She behaved as if she hadn't been all over Tyler earlier that day and lashed out at Samuel and Benjamin in the same breath. It sickened him.

Pushing her off him, Samuel seethed, "Get the hell out of here! I don't want to see you."

He only wanted to wait out the next seven days in peace until the woman aiding him in the shadows got back to him. Once he'd avenged Benjamin, he would leave and never return.

Hannah's face darkened, but a sudden thought crossed her mind, and she pulled Samuel back into her arms again. "Samuel, I can explain my relationship with Tyler. He was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago, and the doctor said he had three years, at best.

"When I asked him about his final wishes, he told me his biggest wish in life was to marry me. I know he mistook me for his girlfriend because of these eyes, so I figured I'd grant him this one wish and marry him.

"I'd hoped to let him spend his last three years in happiness."

Samuel snorted. "What about the child? He's three, isn't he? You and Tyler haven't been married all that long."

Hannah looked evasive. "He's Tyler's kid, and I agreed to look after him as if he were my own. I got drunk one day and mistook Tyler for you. One thing led to another, and we ended up sleeping together. I decided to take accountability for him and his kid.

"But I swear I love you the most, Samuel. I'll throw us a grand wedding after Tyler passes, and Benjamin is the eldest son of the Garber family. No one will dare to put you or Benjamin down."

It was only at the mention of Benjamin that Hannah realized the little boy hadn't happily thrown himself into her arms as he usually would. Brows furrowing, she asked, "Where's Benjamin? Why isn't he home with you? Is he still at the hospital? Did he get hurt badly from the fall, or was it because I made him kneel for a little while—"

A loud crack split the air.

With bloodshot eyes, Samuel delivered a hard slap across Hannah's face. "You have no right to speak of my child, Hannah! Get the hell out of here! I don't want to see you. Get out!"

Storm clouds gathered on Hannah's face. "What are you lashing out for, Samuel? Benjamin only knelt for a bit, and sure, he fell, but he'll toughen up. It's not like either of those things would kill him."

Samuel thought his heart might bleed when he heard her dismissive words. The kneeling, the fall—Hannah had said these wouldn't kill Benjamin, but they did! Benjamin was dead, and it was all because of her!

Samuel grabbed the first object he touched from the table and hurled it to the floor. He stared at Hannah with red-rimmed eyes and thundered, "You're a bastard, Hannah!"

Hannah was about to say something when her phone ringtone cut her off. Upon spying the caller ID "Honey" flashing on the screen, Samuel snorted in contempt.

She grimaced awkwardly, then turned away as she picked up the call. She asked gently, "Yes, what is it, Tyler?"

Samuel couldn't hear what Tyler said, but Hannah blanched. She hurried out the door after that.

As Samuel watched her leave, he had a distinct feeling that their decade-long relationship was nothing more than a waste of time and effort. Thankfully, it was over, though Benjamin had become the sacrifice.

The thought of Benjamin brought a wave of fresh hatred into Samuel's eyes. He vowed he wouldn't let Hannah and Tyler get away with this.

He got into bed with the box in his arms, feeling as if Benjamin was simply resting in his embrace like before.

Samuel slept, only to be woken up in the middle of the night by a bucket of ice water tipped over his head. Even colder was the voice that came from above him. "Look at you, sleeping so soundly after what you did. Have you no shame, Samuel?

"So Tyler snapped and pushed you and Benjamin down the stairs. Did you have to be so heartless as to hire people to pick on him and my three-year-old?"

It was Samuel's second year living in a refugee camp in South Endovia. He was already used to life here. That day, he'd been on his way back to the hut he called home after visiting the refugee camp when a torrential downpour hit him without warning. He hadn't brought an umbrella, and while running the rest of the way back to his tent, he slipped and fell. He'd skinned his knee and bled, but he had no choice other than to scramble to his feet and continue running.Upon returning to the tent, he was about to clean his wound when Diana called him. "Hey, Samuel. Hannah's execution is due soon. Are you coming home?"Samuel pursed his lips. He was about to say no when a knock came at the door. He straightened and limped to the door, but no one was there. A parcel lay on the ground, containing iodine solution, cotton swabs, and ointment. He found it strange how a knock would come at the door whenever he needed something, be it a meal after a long day, medical supplies for his injuries,

Hannah could scarcely believe Samuel had hit her. In the ten years they'd been together, he was gentle and endearing. She couldn't even remember a time when he'd been angry with her, but now, he'd struck her because of another man.Samuel could see the disbelief in Hannah's eyes, but what did it matter? She hadn't stood up for him once when Trevor picked on him.Tears welled up in Hannah's red-rimmed eyes, nearly spilling over and running down her cheeks. "Samuel, I…""Don't say you're sorry," Samuel interrupted her, snorting. "Let me make one thing clear, Hannah. As things are, you don't even have the right to apologize to me."If I could, I'd wish I'd never crossed paths with you or gotten to know you in this lifetime, let alone have Benjamin with you. That way, he wouldn't have died because of you."Hannah went still. She was at a complete loss for words.Samuel returned to the rehabilitation center after that.A week later, his eyes had fully healed. It was time for him to g

The audience turned toward the doors.Diana strode in with a thumb drive in hand, and her smile was nonchalant. "David Hargreeves, is it, Your Honor? You wouldn't mind waiting for a bit while I hand this evidence to the plaintiff's attorney, would you?"David, the judge, glanced at the defense counsel. When the team nodded, he asked Diana, "What is your relationship with the plaintiff?"Diana glanced at Samuel and flashed him a gentle smile. "I'm his girlfriend."Hannah's eyes widened at the revelation. If Katherine hadn't pinned her to her seat, she would have shot to her feet.Samuel nodded. "That's right. Diana and I are seeing each other romantically."David nodded and allowed Diana to tender the evidence. She handed Anthony the thumb drive, and he plugged it in. He opened the folder within, which contained a video clip. He clicked play while the audience watched. The footage was from last night, and it showed Katherine arriving at David's house with two briefcases full of c

Samuel had recovered half his normal vision by the day of the hearing, but the sunlight still hurt his eyes. The doctor had advised him to wrap a thin layer of bandage over his eyes before heading outdoors. He trailed alongside his attorney to the court entrance, only to run straight into Hannah, her attorney, and Katherine.Hannah's eyes reddened with tears when she saw Samuel's state. She stepped forward to tug on his arm, but he dodged her. She froze, and her voice cracked as she said, "Samuel, your eyes…"She'd picked Trevor over Samuel without hesitation at the hospital that day and left him alone in an empty corridor. She'd regretted her decision every day since, but alas, she couldn't turn back time. Now, here they were, facing each other off in court.A cold smirk broke across Samuel's lips. "Thanks to you and your darling husband, I nearly went blind.""He's not my husband!" Hannah argued, panic flashing in her eyes. "Samuel, you're my husband. We're legally wedded. Trev

Hannah's face darkened. "You know where he is?"Trevor seized the breakthrough and nodded firmly. His survival instincts were peaking. "Yes. I'll tell you where he is if you spare me."Hannah stared at him and didn't respond.Believing she might deny his request, Trevor added for good measure, "I also saw him with another woman. Don't you want to know who—""What did you say?" Hannah grabbed Trevor's arm, cutting him off. She scowled. "You saw him with another woman?"Trevor frowned at her painful, vise-like grip, but answered anyway, "Yes, I saw him leaving with another woman that day. You know her, too."Hannah's heart tightened until it ached, and an uneasiness washed over her. "Tell me who she is. Where did Samuel go?"She was clenching her fingers unconsciously. Trevor dared not cry out in pain. "I'll tell you if you promise to let me go after this."Hannah suddenly barked a laugh. She clutched Trevor's jaw and stared at him menacingly. "What makes you think you have the r

Cameron added, "Ms. Garber, I discovered that Trevor got close to you through the butler, Charlotte, with whom he has a close relationship. Tristan is their son, not yours. Your real child died at birth."You didn't sleep with him when you were drunk all those years ago, either. It was a ruse between him and Charlotte to make you feel guilty so that you'd take care of Trevor and Tristan."Cameron snapped his fingers, and the bodyguards immediately hauled Charlotte into the room. They tossed her at Hannah's feet. The color drained from Hannah's face bit by bit until it was completely bloodless.Charlotte had already wet her pants from fear when the bodyguards dragged her in, and grew even more terrified when she saw Tyler's brutalized state. She started bowing at Hannah, begging for mercy."Ms. Garber, it was this bastard who seduced me and roped me into setting you up! He made me pick on Mr. Miller with him, too. I'm sorry. I won't do this again, I promise. Please spare me!"Hann
